One Man Did Make a Difference
When I graduated from high school and joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1981, Ronald Reagan had been President a little less than a year, and America's biggest enemy was the communist regime of the Soviet Union.
During the 1980s the tension between the two super-powers was tense, with surrogates for the two nations fighting in minor wars around the globe. Just a few short years after leaving the Marine Corps, less than a decade after graduating from high school, there was just one super-power left, and I was involved in training officials from former Eastern Bloc countries in counter-terrorism.

He Thought It Not Robbery One of the most common feelings with humans is that of being short-changed by someone else. Of feeling we did not or are not getting a "fair deal" or "fair chance" or fair share"!! Deepening Our Fellowship How can we be a church that "keeps" the people the Lord brings to us? How can we make it an environment where people WANT to stay? Click here for sermon River of Life - Walking in the Kingdom Each on should be a shelter from the wind, refuge from the storm, stream of water in the desert and shadow of a great rock in a dry land. I would like us to focus more on our impact on those around us – and our sacrifice to make that happen. Click here for sermon Making Generous Plans God is a generous Being. He wants us to think like Him – lavishly. Today, I want to challenge us to consider how we think about what is around us.

COUNCIL OF CHURCHES, WASHINGTON AND NORTHERN IDAHO
Accession Nos. 1567, 1567-1, 1567-2
COUNCIL OF CHURCHES OF GREATER SEATTLE
Accession No. 1358-7
The Council of Churches of Washington and Northern Idaho served as an agency for cooperative planning and united action among Christian churches. Its members were Protestant churches of many denominations in Washington and Northern Idaho and affiliated local councils of churches from that region. During and immediately fol lowing World War II, the Council facilitated the reintegration of Japanese Americans into the larger society of the region. The local Council of Churches of Greater Seattle played a prominent role in these efforts. Records of the Council of Churches of Washington and Northern Idaho include a great deal of information on community acceptance problems that many returnees faced, as well as published pamphlets and statements regarding incarceration experiences (Accession No. 1567-2; nine folders in Box 6). Financial records include budgets and requests of national religious organizations for support of the Council's programs for returning Japanese Americans (Accession No. 1567-1, Box 12, Folder 8). Efforts of the Council of Churches of Greater Seattle during the war focused on providing internees with clergy and religious school staff and with facilitating religious services and children's programs in the camps. In December of 1944, the Council initiated efforts to improve community acceptance of returnees and to promote their reintegration into society. The United Church Ministry to Returning Japanese was formed under the general direction of the Council, reflecting the involvement of the Presbyterian, Methodist, Congregational, Episcopal and Baptist churches, among others. Special programs sponsored by the Ministry included worship services in Japanese, youth fellowships, hostels, and employment and housing advice. Files documenting these activities are found in the Council of Churches of Greater Seattle records (Accession No. 1358-7, Box 15). An inventory of these records is included below.

JAPANESE ASSEMBLY CENTER AT PUYALLUP
The first Japanese-Americans from Seattle were evacuated to Puyallup in the last week in April, 1942, and the last of them will be leaving Puyallup for southern Idaho during the last week of August. So the life of the camp was four months, almost to a day. The Council of Churches early in April appointed Rev. E. W. Thompson as its official representative and Mr. Emery Andrews as his associate worker. In addition to these, the churches of the council have had many pastors, workers previously associated with the five Protestant Japanese churches in the city, and individual members who have played an active part and made a vital contribution to the material and spiritual welfare of their fellow citizens in the camp. In saying this, we must not overlook the fact that some people in the camp also come from Sumner, near Puyallup and from Fife, near Tacoma. People from the churches of Sumner, Fife, Puyallup, and Tacoma have also had a real share in this enterprise. The Puyallup Assembly Center, built on the edge of the city of Puyallup is divided into four distinct areas, designated A, B, C, and D, divided not merely by high barbed wire fences but by blocks of private homes as well. Many services to the camp had to be rendered four times to reach all concerned.

Washington Counties Though the areas of jurisdiction for the Church dioceses may not follow civil county lines exactly, this list may help you to identify which diocese presently encompasses the county you are researching. Keep in mind that one diocese may encompass a portion of a county, while the remaining portion is included within another diocese, especially if you are researching in an area near a boundary.
New dioceses and parishes have been formed to serve the needs of the Catholic people throughout the history of this area. Usually, the earlier the time period, the larger the geographic area served by a missionary/pastor. In 1838, for example, the area served by Rev. , vicar-general of the Oregon Mission, and his assistant, Rev. Modeste Demers

http://www.sscnet.ucla.edu/history/dubois/classes/995/98F/doc39.html
Debate on Woman Suffrage and the Churches, NWSA Convention, Washington, D.C., February 17-19, 1886
A letter from Mrs. Elizabeth Cady Stanton urged that the question of woman suffrage should now be carried into the churches and church conventions for their approval, and that more enlightened teaching from the pulpit in regard to women should be insisted upon. The letter was accompanied by a resolution to this effect, both expressed in very strong language. They were read first in executive session. The following extracts are taken from the stenographic report of the meeting: Mrs. Helen M. Gougar (Ind.) moved that the resolution be laid upon the table, saying: "A resolution something like this came into the last convention, and it has done more to cripple my work and that of other suffragists than anything which has happened in the whole history of the woman suffrage movement. When you look this country over you find the slums are opposed to us, while some of the best leaders and advocates of woman suffrage are among the Christian people. A bishop of the Roman Catholic Church stood through my meeting in Peoria not long since. We can not afford to antagonize the churches. Some of us are orthodox, and some of us are unorthodox, but this association is for suffrage and not for the discussion of religious dogmas. I can not stay within these borders if that resolution is adopted, from the fact that my bands would be tied. I hope it will not go into open convention for debate. MRS. PERKINS (O.) : I think we ought to pay due consideration and respect to our beloved president. I have no objection to sending missionaries to the churches asking them to pay attention to woman suffrage; but I do not think the churches are our greatest enemies. They might have been so in Mrs. Stanton's early days, but to-day they are our best helpers. If it were not for their cooperation I could not get a hearing before the public. And now that they are coming to meet us half Way, do not throw stones at them, I hope that resolution, as worded, will not go into the convention.
