Basil Cristakis, 5, holds a candle during services at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Middletown, Ohio, earlier this week. By Associated Press YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) Each Wednesday, four veterans of the U.S. military kneel and offer prayers for peace using words of the faithful from all over the world at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in the Yakima Valley. There are Christian, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist, Bahai and even Zoroastrian prayers. "We just don't think we have an exclusive voice to heaven," said Bill Flower, 66, an Army veteran and a lifelong member of Holy Trinity. The idea came from the church's Spokane Diocese, which designated Wednesday, March 19, as a day of prayer, said the Rev. David Lundean, rector of the 120-member church in Sunnyside. But Lundean, 70, also an Army veteran, Flower and two others, Bill Gardner and John Saras, decided to keep the vigil every Wednesday throughout Lent. If the war with Iraq continues beyond Easter, "I suspect we will keep doing it," Lundean said.

Related Story Rituals unite Orthodox church faithful View the complete series online With a growing number of immigrant workers in Bullitt County, several Mount Washington churches have joined forces to help Hispanic families and other immigrants adjust to living in the United States. As part of its Hispanic Ministry Program, First Baptist Church of Mount Washington offers English classes and provides meals and a worship service in Spanish on Sunday evenings. The classes and services are held at First Baptist, but other churches in Mount Washington, including Kings Baptist and St. Xavier, also provide volunteers, food and other supplies. ‘‘One of the great things about this ministry is that so many of the area churches are helping,’’ said the Rev. Travis Collins, First Baptist’s pastor. Collins said First Baptist began the Hispanic Ministry Program in August because of ‘‘a growing need we saw in the community.’’ The church recruited Edgardo Mansilla, a native of Argentina who is director of the Americana Community Center in Louisville, to serve as pastor for the Hispanic Ministry Program.

T he county's name honors pioneer missionary Marcus Whitman. He and H. H. Spalding had established a mission near Fort Walla Walla in 1836. Eden Valley T he Eden Valley Church of Christ may have been the dream of Edward and Lattice Pedigo. These pioneers of 1854 moved here in 1871 from Oregon where they had been leaders in the Damascus church. They were joined by their son-in-law and daughter, Samuel P. and Betsy Ann Pedigo Gilliland , also 1854 pioneers. Both Pedigo families spent the rest of their lives here. They are buried in the Eden Valley Cemetery There is a short autobiography of Edward Pedigo on this link. Another family we can trace is William H. Harrison McClure and his wife Amanda Elizabeth Callison McClure.

"The Earth is the Lord’s" – our teachings give roots to our work. Respect for the voices, sensibilities and concerns of communities of color and economically stressed communities are central to this program. We have a unique advocacy voice: We call for moral deliberation, and we search for the path to sustainable solutions.
In 2002, this program has focused on moral deliberation and inter-religious dialogue about the concerns of communities of color and economically distressed communities. Native American sacred lands, urban toxic sites, and disputes over water in rural areas are at the core of the program work in this coming year. (click here for background information)
