I. Intellectual Property Policies Implicated
The revisiting of the institution's intellectual property policies, on the other hand, creates an opportunity for the institution to:
3. Identify when and how the institution can use intellectual property generated by faculty whether it is via ownership or licenses, exclusive, non-exclusive, for internal and non-commercial purposes only and what temporal or employment-related limitations exist.
4. Clarify how faculty will be compensated for the development and preparation of distance learning courses and how the parties will share in any royalties generated by the courses. Clarify how the authorship of distance education courses will affect promotion and tenure.
5. Identify who will administer the institution's intellectual property policies, what is the default mechanism for circumstances not specifically enumerated in the institution's intellectual property policies, and what will be the initial dispute resolution mechanism.
6. Clarify when the inventor or author can use the institution's trademarks, e.g., name and logos, when commercializing a work.

One of the three daughters of the late Rev. Oliver L. Brown, who, in the fall of 1951, along with 12 other families, led by attorneys for the NAACP, filed suit in behalf of their children against the local Board of Education. Their case made its way all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court and on May 17, 1954, became known as the landmark decision; Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas . This case was named for Oliver Brown, i.e., Oliver L. Brown et. al. vs. The Board of Education of Topeka . Brown died in 1961 before knowing the impact this case would have on the country.
Since its establishment, the Brown Foundation has provided scholarships to forty minority students, presented awards to local, state and national leaders and sponsored programs on diversity and educational issues, for some 4000 people. In 1990, under her leadership the Foundation successfully worked with the U.S. Congress to establish the Brown v Board of Education National Park in Topeka, scheduled to open in 2004. In 2001 under her leadership, the Foundation successfully worked with the U.S. Congress to establish the Brown v. Board of Education 50th Anniversary Presidential Commission, which will serve to provide a Federal presence in the 2004 anniversary of the Brown decision.
On January 17, 1994, May 19, 1995 and May 2003 she was one of a group of individuals invited to a reception at the White House in honor of Dr. King and the Children of Civil Rights Movement and the 75th Anniversary, U.S. Department of Labor, Women's Bureau and 49th Anniversary of

President
Alabama State Board of Education
P.O. Box 302101
Montgomery, AL 36130-2101 Dear Governor Siegelman: On behalf of the undersigned organizations, we are writing to alert you to a disturbing effort by U.S. tobacco companies to form “partnerships” with state departments of education and other reputable organizations concerned with the health and welfare of America’s children. This endeavor is another in a long line of cynical public relations initiatives by the tobacco industry to gain “innocence by association” with credible organizations such as yours. While its purpose is to appear reformed and responsible, the tobacco industry uses these relationships to avoid fundamental changes in its unethical marketing and manufacturing practices. We strongly urge you to reject any funding or other type of relationship with the tobacco industry.
