The State of Washington has (through the promulgation of WACs 180-78A-065 (3), 180-78A-140, and 180-78A-145) mandated that state funded universities create professional education advisory boards (PEABs). These boards advise, review, and make recommendations regarding the development, implementation, and revision of programs for the preparation of elementary, middle level and secondary school personnel. The programs of Teacher Preparation, School Administrator, School Counseling and School Psychology each have a PEAB that follow bylaws, which govern the deliberation, decision-making and formalization of school-based personnel recommendations, which are submitted first to the Executive Board for consideration and dissemination.

George Washington Lives! On the Internet!
George Washington: Farmer, Soldier, and First President of the United States of America. Students can learn all about him on the Internet by George! Included: Activities to use across the grades! George Washington's birthday, February 22, was celebrated really celebrated! by Americans in the past. Balls, teas, and fireworks marked the day our nation's first president was born. In Massachusetts, Old Sturbridge Village, a re-creation of a Massachusetts village of the 1830s, still celebrates George Washington's birthday as it was celebrated years ago. "During the 1800s, one of the biggest official winter celebrations, by George!, was the annual observance of George Washington's birthday," Village officials report. "Even before his death in 1799, the Washington's Birthday bash and its accompanying Birthnight Ball were firmly established in New England and elsewhere in the young republic as high cause for revelry, often at the local tavern or the home of a prominent citizen."

Established in 1877, the Washington State Board of Education develops policies for state education laws created by our Legislature and the Governor. The board works with other governmental and education organizations to support student achievement and student learning goals through a variety of responsibilities. It consists of of eleven statutory members: ten elected citizens, representing each of the nine Congressional Districts; one representing state approved private schools, and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction as chief executive officer. Also serving on the board, at the board's invitation, are two high school students and the Governor (or appointed designee). State Board members are deeply committed to high quality education for every student in Washington State. State of Washington Academic Achievement and Accountability Commission
The Academic Achievement and Accountability Commission was created by the 1999 Legislature to provide oversight of the state’s K-12 educational accountability system. The purpose of Washington's accountability system is to improve student learning and student achievement so that each individual student will be given the opportunity to become a responsible citizen and successfully live, learn, and work in the twenty-first century. The nine-member commission was selected by Governor Gary Locke from nominations from the Washington State Senate and House of Representatives and recommendations from statewide groups and the public.

Home Involvement Activism Publications ... Resources "Including students as representatives on boards and committees takes classroom learning into the community and opens the door for many more students to become involved in the policies and practices that shape their schools." Wisconsin State Superintendent of Public Instruction Elizabeth Burmaster Students on School Boards of Education Resource Guide Second Edition, August 2003 Created for www.SoundOut.org Description A multi-topic resource guide promoting Student Voice, Participation, Engagement, Involvement, and Representation on Local, District, Regional, and State Boards of Education. Includes research, examples, and other resources for students, educators, administrators, and concerned community members who support validating student voice in school decision-making by including students on school boards. For more information on students as education decision-makers, click here Introduction STUDENT participation on boards of education is a small part of a much larger movement towards meaningful student involvement throughout education. Since the 1960s the effort to promote student representation has waxed and waned, according to the will of school officials and the sincere interest of students involved. Today that tide is turning, and students across the US are calling for deepened engagement in the decision-making that affects them on all levels - in the classroom, in the auditorium, and in the boardroom. This guide can also serve students, educators, administrators, and concerned community members around the nation as they lobby for student participation on school boards of education.
