"I am pleased that the State Archives will display information about this important, yet often unmentioned, chapter in Oregon history," said Secretary of State Bill Bradbury, whose agency includes the State Archives. "It is not a chapter we can be proud of, but one which we should not forget." Federal Indian policy makers in the late 1800s and early 1900s sought to use the schoolhouse specifically the boarding school as an instrument for acculturating Indian youth to "American" ways of thinking and living. Only by removing Indian children from their homes for extended periods of time, policy makers reasoned, could white "civilization" take root while childhood memories of "savagism" gradually faded to the point of extinction. The attempted eradication of Indian cultures is still a source of pain for many American Indians. This exhibit introduces a subject little known outside American Indian communities. The exhibit includes stories of Indian boarding school survivors told in the oral tradition of their ancestors and through historical photographs and student artwork dating from the late 1800s through the 1950s. The photographs illustrate several of the large, off-reservation federal schools – Carlisle in Pennsylvania, Chilocco in Oklahoma, and Chemawa in Oregon – as well as mission schools in Washington and Idaho. Exhibit materials are part of the Estelle Reel Collection at Cheney Cowles Museum in Spokane, Washington.

BY ANDREA SMITH Andrea Smith (Cherokee) is interim coordinator for the Boarding School Healing Project and a Bunche Fellow coordinating AIUSA’s research project on Sexual Violence and American Indian women. A little while ago, I was supposed to attend a Halloween party. I decided to dress as a nun because nuns were the scariest things I ever saw,” says Willetta Dolphus, 54, a Cheyenne River Lakota. The source of her fear, still vivid decades later, was her childhood experience at American Indian boarding schools in South Dakota. Dolphus is one of more than 100,000 Native Americans forced by the U.S. government to attend Christian schools. The system, which began with President Ulysses Grant’s 1869 “Peace Policy,” continued well into the 20th century. Church officials, missionaries, and local authorities took children as young as five from their parents and shipped them off to Christian boarding schools; they forced others to enroll in Christian day schools on reservations. Those sent to boarding school were separated from their families for most of the year, sometimes without a single family visit. Parents caught trying to hide their children lost food rations. Virtually imprisoned in the schools, children experienced a devastating litany of abuses, from forced assimilation and grueling labor to widespread sexual and physical abuse. Scholars and activists have only begun to analyze what Joseph Gone (Gros Ventre), a psychology professor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, calls “the cumulative effects of these historical experiences across gender and generation upon tribal communities today.”

Around 100 fee-paying schools are taking part in a recruitment scheme with a German-based educational consultancy, with representatives from UK schools visiting Germany to talk to parents about what a boarding school education can offer. While there has been an increase in the numbers of overseas pupils attending UK boarding schools and an increase in "occasional" boarding, the overall pupil numbers have been in long-term decline. Recruitment drives Boarding school numbers have gone down from almost 126,000 in 1985 to less than 82,000 by 1999, as fewer parents in the UK have sent their children to study away from home. Police in Montclair removed more than two dozen youths from a private military-style boarding school Tuesday, after a former employee and several former residents accused operators of administering abusive punishment. In an early morning raid, 26 youths were taken from an apartment complex used as a residence by the Ministerial Christian Academy. Investigators with search warrants confiscated handcuffs, shackles, computers, financial records and other documents, police said. Ricky Leslie, 39, of Montclair, described by police as a caretaker at the residence, was arrested on suspicion of rape with a foreign object and sexual battery of a female student. Police said Leslie is a registered sex offender. Police were led to the two-story apartment complex on a quiet street by accusations that youngsters had been restrained in handcuffs, left for hours in cramped, darkened storage rooms and forced into a cold swimming pool as punishments. Kenneth Walleman came to the front door, Lloyd "Sonny" One Star went to get his gun. "I couldn't keep my composure. I kept shaking," said One Star, 46, a leader of the Sioux tribe on this reservation. "I was going to kill him." Walleman was a former administrator at St. Francis Mission, the Jesuit boarding school One Star had attended through his youth - a priest, One Star says now, who sexually abused him for years. Walleman fled before he could state his business that day a few years ago, but he might yet face the wrath of Sonny One Star - and that of other former students. After years of holding their silence, hundreds of American Indians are giving accounts of physical and sexual abuse at the hands of the priests and nuns who ran a dozen missionary boarding schools across South Dakota through most of the 20th century. Allegations of priestly sexual abuse in parishes have rocked the Catholic Church over the past year. But what the former students say occurred at the reservation schools into the 1970s was more systemic: They say physical abuse was a routine part of school discipline; that sexual abuse was commonplace; and that both forms of abuse were committed against children in the round-the-clock, unsupervised care of school staff members. Some former students have filed a $25 billion class action lawsuit in Washington against the federal government, which paid the church to house, feed and educate American Indian children. The goal is to show students that gaining knowledge can be enjoyable. College-Prep Curriculum The high-school curriculum and graduation requirements are similar to any typical college-preparatory school. English, mathematics, science, and Spanish are emphasized. Independent study in a student's field of interest is encouraged. Full credit will be given for any specific course if its academic requirements are met independently. English Comprehension is Key Nothing is more important in the high-school years than mastering basic English communication skills.
