By Jon Ward and Denise Barnes
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
A D.C. student picked up on the street during school hours receives a reminder of her responsibility from a police truancy officer.
ASTRID RIECKEN (THE WASHINGTON TIMES)
Truancy is rampant in D.C. public schools and rising in some suburban schools, placing youths on a path to delinquency and future hardship.
"I see kids in trouble who are charged with delinquency, and frequently truancy is a part of the problem," says Prince George's County Circuit Court Judge C. Philip Nichols Jr., who is assigned to juvenile court.
"Half the people in jail in America today do not have a high school diploma, and if we don't do something, it's going to get a whole lot worse. Life is a whole lot tougher without an education," Judge Nichols says.
For students such as Gujuan Lee, 17, of Fort Washington, truancy puts them in a downward spiral of diminished expectations and opportunities.
An average student at Friendly High School, Gujuan began skipping classes last year to hang out with a girlfriend. He was expelled for truancy, then bounced from job to job and drifted into delinquency.

This 4 percent limit does not apply, however, to schools identified by the School Board as being countywide alternative schools or programs, the special programs for which students from the entire County may apply on a space-available basis such as the H-B Woodlawn Program the International Baccalaureate Program at Washington-Lee High School , the Arts and Communications Technology Focus Program at Kenmore Middle School, or the middle school Spanish Partial Immersion Program at Gunston Middle School The application process must take place between November 3, 2003 and January 16, 2004 for the 2004-2005 school year, and November 1, 2004 and January 21, 2005 for the 2005-2006 . Transportation Application Process An application to the Kindergarten lottery must be submitted between February 1 and April 15 (should the 15th fall on weekend day, the period will be extended to the next available school day) for the following school year. The application is submitted at Arlington Traditional school after the parent has attended a Transfer Orientation at both the home/neighborhood school and obtained the signature of the principal, and at Arlington Traditional school. (see Transfer Orientation dates ). Once the random lottery takes place, usually the week after the closing of the application deadline, those randomly selected will be notified by mail. Siblings will be given preference. Students who have already been selected do not need to reapply in the following years. Students who applied but were not selected and who got a number higher than the number of slots available, will be placed in numerical order on the waiting list. Of those selected, should a parent change his/her mind, resulting in a space opening, the next person in the waiting list will be contacted and given an opportunity to register. Blank applications to the lottery will become available in January, 2004 or earlier at the school or by contacting the School Information Center at (703) 228-7660.

The interest in getting back to alternative/holostic/complimentary medicine as well as agriculture (See SAFE below) is a "headlong rush" from that offered by Western medicine and its "drug - lets hope this does it (cover the symptoms) approach", which is just not working. ( Read Notice ) Over 48% of people desiring healthcare (in the U.S.), according to various publications and sources this last year (1998) went for the "holistic" alternative approach. As a result, the names of educational institutions, many which have been teaching and fully accredited for their students, are getting substantial increases in enrollments. We thought our viewers would like to look in Karinya for these sources, thus, we present our list, which is expected to grow rapidly. Alternative School Calendars: Smart Idea or Senseless Experiment?
If American students are to compete effectively in a global economy, do they need to spend substantially more time in school? Would increasing the length of the school year or school day raise students' achievement, or would it be more advantageous to alter how we use the time we currently have? Many school systems are experimenting with alternative instructional schedules in an attempt to find out. Included: Year-round schools, later start times, the four-day week, trimesters, and more!

Washington Area Schools: Admission Requirements and Programs of Interest
This paper contains a listing of public school options in the Washington, DC area. For comprehensive and current information on schools and programs , please contact the school district directly. International Baccalaureate (IB) programs in Washington, DC area public schools are listed below under Choices for High School. Non-public school links are also listed below. In some districts, all students coming from foreign areas are referred from the neighborhood school to a central registration office. To avoid this confusion, Foreign Service families returning from overseas should tell schools they are U.S. citizens. For statistical information on schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia, visit the Virginia Department of Education's School Report Card . This web page provides individual school report cards by pulling down the list of counties, then schools. A variety of demographic and statistical information helps to paint a portrait of a school, including programs within that school. It is worth noting that not all of Virginia's excellent schools have a highly-recognizable name. Therefore, when looking for a home, ask your realtor for a printout of the multiple listings, which list the neighborhood schools. The School Report Card will allow you to compare information about schools. There are many excellent public and private schools in the greater Washington metropolitan area, but what makes the choice of schools difficult is the price of real estate. In many cases, the better the reputation of the local public schools, the higher the real estate cost! A general rule of thumb is, the closer to the city you are, the smaller, older, and more expensive the home will be. The further out you go, the more likely one will be able to find newer, more spacious homes. By doing your homework first, the good news is that BOTH scenarios can land your children in a good local public school.

Newsweek Alternative Schools: Daring to Be Different by Jay Matthews, Newsweeek Staff Writer June 02, 2003 12:00 AM Tests aren't the only way to judge a high school. In the past decade, educators around the country have created dozens of intriguing models for reform. They include virtual high schools where all classes are online and "theme" schools based on environmental issues or the health-care profession. These schools tend to have "a strong identity shared by families and faculty alike," says Thomas Toch, writer-in-residence at the National Center on Education and the Economy and author of "High Schools on a Human Scale," published this month by Beacon Press. Some examples: Urban Academy Laboratory High School, New York City: This public school of 120 students has made debate a teaching tool in every classroom. "What's your evidence?" could be the school motto; one of the most popular courses is officially titled "Are You Looking for an Argument?" Despite drawing a typically urban mix of students, with many minorities and children of low-income parents, the school has a 3 percent dropout rate, while 95 percent of graduates go to college. Science Fiction
After spending half a billion taxpayer dollars, alternative medicine gurus still can't prove their methods workhow convenient. By Chris Mooney This may sound like a joke, but it's closer to cutting-edge science. A documentary containing this scene was shown to me by Dr. Herbert Benson, the lead scientist in the tumo study and the director of Harvard's Mind/Body Medical Institute. A cardiologist by training who authored the 1975 bestseller The Relaxation Response, Benson is at the forefront of one of the most important medical movements in decades, the push to incorporate nontraditional or "alternative" healing methods into the canon of Western medicine. He is one of hundreds of researchers at dozens of medical schools studying these previously untested techniques, collectively referred to as "complementary and alternative medicine" or "CAM"-everything from meditation, acupuncture, and herbalism to radical procedures like chelation, colonics, and leech therapy. The goal is to determine which treatments hold legitimate medical value and which are mere superstition. CAM's supporters are trying to have it both ways-and succeeding. Today, a guilty silence shrouds an increasingly important question: Can a field like alternative and complementary medicine, which in many cases is inherently hostile to science, survive its arrival into mainstream medicine? Or are American taxpayers the victims of an expensive medical swindle being abetted by the nation's leading medical schools?

Instead, they tend a herd of angora goats, run an embroidery company, and study genetic mutations in local frogs. That's why Dee Thomas, one of the school's co-directors, sighs when she's asked about the requirement that her students face standardized state tests. "Sure, we can jump through their hoops and do the standardized-test thing," she says. "But I don't think that's a true reflection of what we're doing with our kids."
