Following the MOD's study into 'Front Line First' the Army in Great Britain was reorganised in April 1995. A new formational headquarters called HQ Land Command was subsequently created. This headquarters was tasked to command and deliver the Army's fighting capability throughout the world, whenever required. HQ Land is based at Wilton near Salisbury and commands all operational troops in Great Britain, Germany, Nepal and Brunei, together with the training teams in Canada, Kenya and Belize. Three geographical Divisions assist HQ Land in its responsibilities to Great Britain-based units: 2nd Division has its headquarters in Edinburgh, with responsibility for the whole of Northern England and Scotland. The Division was originally formed to fight in the Peninsular War, although its crossed keys logo was not adopted until the Division was reformed in England, following Dunkirk.

War of 1812
War between the USA and Britain caused by British interference with US trade and shipping as part of the economic warfare against Napoleonic France. Tensions with the British in Canada led to plans for a US invasion but these were never realized and success was limited to the capture of Detroit and a few notable naval victories. In 1814, British forces occupied Washington, DC, and burned the White House and the Capitol. A treaty signed in Ghent, Belgium, December 1814 ended the conflict. US sailors were impressed from American ships, and a blockade was imposed on US shipping by Britain. In North America, British assistance was extended to Indians who were harassing the north-west settlements. President Madison authorized the beginning of hostilities against the British on the high seas and in Canada; US forces failed twice in attempts to invade British-held Canada. After the peace treaty had been signed in Ghent, but before news of it reached the USA, American troops under Andrew Jackson defeated the British at New Orleans in 1815
War of the Austrian Succession
[1740-1748] War between Austria (supported by England and Holland) and Prussia (supported by France and Spain). In 1740, the Holy Roman emperor Charles VI died and the succession of his daughter Maria Theresa was disputed by a number of European powers. Frederick the Great of Prussia seized Silesia from Austria. In 1743, at Dettingen, an army of British, Austrians, and Hanoverians under the command of George II was victorious over the French. In 1745, an Austro-English army was defeated at Fontenoy but British naval superiority was confirmed, and there were gains in the Americas and India. In 1748, the war was ended by the

Greetings and well-met fellow toxiphiles. Today I would like to share a brief story about the importance of the bow in ancient warfare. I will illustrate this by giving an account of the Battle of Crecy, France in 1346 during the Wars of The Roses and the Hundred Years' war. We in the United States have been greatly influenced by the six-foot-long English Longbow which for hundreds of years was the sole missile weapon of Great Britain's foot-soldiers. England's supremacy as a military nation was predicated on the skill of the foot-soldier armed with the longbow. By law, every male from sixteen to sixty years of age was required to own and practice with the longbow. Price regulation is not a modern innovation. Since England's safety depended on her archers, the price of a good bow was fixed by law so that no individual could plead that he could not afford one. Now that that is out of the way, on to the battle. During the Wars of the Roses and the Hundred Years' War archers were the elite troops of Great Britain. They were the decisive factor in many a hard-fought battle. At Crecy, France, in the year 1346, the English longbow proved its worth for the first time in Continental warfare.

Richard, duke of York , came to the fore as leader of the opposition to the faction (William de la Pole , duke of Suffolk; Edmund Beaufort, duke of Somerset ; and the queen, Margaret of Anjou ) that controlled the weak Lancastrian king Henry VI . The Yorkists gained popular support as a result of discontent over the failure of English arms in the Hundred Years War and over the corruption of the court, discontent reflected in the rebellion of Jack Cade in 1450. Also in that year Suffolk was murdered, and the duke of York forced the king to recognize his claim as heir to the throne. In 1453 the king became insane, and the birth of a son to Margaret of Anjou displaced York as heir. The duke was appointed protector, but when the king recovered in 1454, York was excluded from the royal council. He resorted to arms. Queen Margaret, whose son was thus disinherited, raised an army and defeated (1460) the Yorkists at Wakefield. York was killed in this battle, and his claims devolved upon his son Edward, but Richard Neville, earl of

In the third millennium, BC, a number of different people were already occupying mainland England. These included Celts and Iberians. Julius Caesar and his Roman armies invaded the country in around 55 BC and then Claudius in 43 BC began the official colonization of the region. The Romans finally left in 407 AD, never having been able to gain control of Scotland or Ireland. Then Germanic people from Northern Germany and Denmark began to arrive and after several bloody battles with the current residents, established roughly half a dozen kingdoms around the country. Wales was united with England by decree in 1536, ironically by a king of welsh descent. At the end of the 6th century, the predominant Anglo-Saxons began a conversion to Christianity. St Augustine, sent by Rome in 601 was the primary converter. Despite numerous attempts to unite the Kingdom, it did not become one until Alfred the great, king of Wessex, brought about the unification in 871 AD. After repeated incursions by the Danes, England was finally conquered in 1016 by King Canute. This lasted until Edward the Confessor ascended the throne in 1042. When William the Conqueror succeeded Edward, England began to align itself with France. The ties between England and France were reinforced when Henry of Anjou married Eleanor of Aquitane in 1154. Henry then invaded and captured Ireland and Scotland. Upon his death, his sons Richard the Lionheart and John of Lackland conceded their rights in the Magna Carta and set the stage for the Hundred Years War.
