STUDENTS' DIALOGS: DOLLEY MADISON
LYUBA'S HOMEWORK:
Although Dolley Madison was a very popular First Lady, her husband, President James Madison, was unpopular and received a lot of criticism for the War of 1812.
This is Lyuba's homework. In this conversation, Dolley tries to build her husband's confidence and talk him out of resigning.
JAMES Hi Dear, how are you? Dolley, we have to talk. DOLLEY Fill me in. What's this about? JAMES I can't get away with running for president again. In fact, I want to resign. My presidency is on the rocks. DOLLEY Why? What's the matter? JAMES I'm probably not doing very well as president. Americans are criticizing me for some of my actions. DOLLEY James, it's out of the question. You shouldn't resign, and you should run for a second term. You have been a good politician since 1776 when you drafted the Constitution for the State of Virginia and later when you were the one most responsible for writing the Constitution of the United States. You have a lot of practical experience in politics. Everyone makes mistakes. Therefore, you stand a chance of being reelected. JAMES I'm afraid your plans for me to serve a second term will fall through. I'm not popular now.

This painting depicts John Julian, an African American who piloted the pirate ship Whydah (WID-uh).
Artwork by Don Maitz Pirates and Sailors: Black History on the High Seas By Sarah Ives National Geographic Kids News February 02, 2004 W. Jeffrey Bolster, a history professor at the University of New Hampshire, works to teach people about African-American sailors. This painting shows two pirates who traveled with Captain Kidd. The African American at top may have been second-in-command.
Artwork by Don Maitz During the 17th and 18th centuries, Bolster said, as many as 30 percent of sailors were African-American. At sea, African Americans worked as cooks, musicians, skilled sailors, and unskilled workers. On whaling ships they often worked as harpooners, hunting whales with spears called harpoons. African Americans also worked on pirate ships.
