The North American War of 1812 between the United States and the United Kingdom is one of several wars associated with that year. It is more normally known in British texts as the British-American War to distinguish it from Napoleon 's war against Russia which also began in that year and from the continuing British war with Napoleon. (These wars may perhaps be linked by a common connection with furthering Napoleon's Continental policy of economic attrition against British war-making capacity.) This particular war began with the American declaration of war on June 18 of that year (following U.S. President James Madison 's appeal to the U.S. Congress on June 1 ) and lasted until the beginning of . It is about the zealous account of African Americans standing up and being counted as defenders of LIBERTY. This LIBERTY encompasses a vision of basic human rights connected with justice as accorded to all other peoples seeking freedom both inside and outside the territorial bounds of America. American history, at its best, is filled with records of the early colonial settlers searching for a place where the principles of freedom could be expressed and practiced. We are all familiar with the many written proposals, oral discourses, and constitutional provisions which evolved from their democratic ideas. The vibrancy of their words were later put into resolutions which were incorporated into our U. S. Constitution. The early settlers of America spent arduous hours creating a national document which would hopefully spell out the basic ingredients necessary to sustain a unified democracy within this land. From the beginning, these pioneers wanted to establish a worthy place free of restrictions which would not subvert or obstruct the basic foundations of a viable democratic society. Educational, political, social, and religious freedoms were some of the known necessities for the real American way of life in this new country.

Fighting Sail on Lake Huron and Georgian Bay: The War of 1812 and its Aftermath
Canadian Barry Gough's new work makes an important and long-awaited contribution to our understanding of the struggle for domination in the Upper Great Lakes and the American heartland during the War of 1812. A critical time for both the old northwest and the peoples who lived along the U.S.-Canadian border, it was also a time when the territories that became Wisconsin and Minnesota were formed, the fur trade was established, and the Indian nations attempted to preserve both their homeland and their independence. It is a unique study in that it goes far beyond the Battle of Lake Erie, where traditional historical accounts end, adding new chapters to the history of Detroit and Michilimackinac. This comprehensive, chronological account exposes the reader not only to the naval and territorial consequences of the era but also to the plight along the way. It is the story of shipbuilding, of the limits of sea power, and of the men and women who succeeded in traversing unknown water and land. The author details such events as Commodore Arthur Sinclair's disastrous U.S. naval expedition to Lake Huron and Georgian Bay in 1814 and describes how British forces captured unsuspecting U.S. naval schooners. Supplemented with excellent maps and illustrations, the text also provides information about hydrographic surveying and the search for useful naval bases. This book will appeal to everyone interested in the age of fighting sail, Native American history, and early American naval pursuits.

For more than two hundred years, African Americans have participated in every conflict in United States history. They not only have fought bravely the common enemies of the United States but also have had to confront the individual and institutional racism of their countrymen. - Lt. Col. Introduction
When we look at world history, the war that broke out in North America in 1812 was greatly overshadowed by the war between France and Britain in Europe . It was a small war but Canadians remember it as one of the most important times in their history. The young provinces of Upper Canada, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island had scarcely established themselves before there were signs of serious trouble in store for them. Events in continental Europe, the United States and Great Britain were following a course that was to breed conflict, a conflict in which the British colonies of North America were to become involved. In Europe, France and Britain were at war between 1793 and 1802. There were a few months of peace, and then, in 1803, the French dictator Napoleon Bonaparte , again declared war. An ambitious person, Napoleon was anxious to re-create the mighty French empire of earlier days. One step in this direction was persuading Spain to return to France the North American territory of Louisiana granted to Spain in 1763. The news that land lying to the west of the Mississippi River had again become French proved disturbing to the Americans. There was the possibility, they believed, that if Britain should defeat France in Europe, Louisiana might fall into British hands. In either case, the people of the United States were not happy with the new developement.

The people of that city made a brave defense and hastily threw up extensive fortifications. In the end the British fleet, after a severe bombardment of Fort McHenry, were driven off. The British Admiral had boasted that Fort McHenry would yield in a few hours; and two days after, when its flag was still flying, Francis S. It could well be named the War of Faulty Communication. Two days before the war was declared, the British Government had stated that it would repeal the laws which ere the chief excuse for fighting. If there had been telegraphic communication with Europe, the war might well have been avoided Speedy communication would also have prevented the greatest battle of the war, which was fought at New Orleans fifteen days after a treaty of peace had been signed. p. 27- A group of young men known as

REEL AMERICAN HISTORY home film projects for students for teachers ... list of films T here are many, many films that can be said to depict eras or aspects of American history, but for the purposes of the Reel American History project, and following the lead of Robert Brent Toplin and Kenneth M. Cameron , we focus on feature films (and some documentaries) based on "real people and actual events." In doing so, for instance, we necessarily and regrettably subordinate some classic films like The Grapes of Wrath , which captures the spirit of the Great Depression, because we are primarily interested in studying what film-makers do with a specific historical record. In this respect the advice to students about selecting individual film projects might be helpful in identifying the kinds of films we feel are most appropriate for our archive. This is a working list of almost 500 films, no doubt far from complete, and, since it will continue to change, we welcome suggestions for additions of titles as well as better ways to organize them. Links are provided for film projects that are already part of the archive.
