Researching the Military Heroes in Your Family History
– Juliana Smith Your first step would be to determine when and where in the armed service a soldier served, and whether he or she was in the enlisted ranks or an officer. Clues may be found in family stories (keep in mind that military stories—like the proverbial fishing tale of "the one that got away"—are often exaggerated and should be taken with a grain of salt), old newspaper clippings, correspondence, scrapbooks, journals or diaries, service medals and memorabilia, and photographs of the soldier in uniform. The grave marker of a veteran may also contain information about military service as well.

84. Tecumthe: His Role In The Cause And Conduct Of The War Of 1812
Long essay on the part played by the Native american leader in the lead up to and course of the war.

Tecumseh: His Role in the Cause and Conduct of the War of 1812 To contact me, email me at brian.blodgett @ comcast.net Tecumseh: His Role in the Cause and Conduct of the War of 1812 Before the birth of Tecumseh, the Miami, whose territory stretched from Pennsylvania southward to the Ohio River and northward to the Great Lakes, realized that the Americans posed a potential problem. The Miami decided on creating a buffer zone between them and the Americans and they invited the Shawnee to permanently settle in an area north of the Ohio River. For the first time in the memory of the Shawnee, they had a homeland. However, their nomadic heritage led them to continue wandering about from time to time, but the majority of them remained in the area north of the Ohio River. Tecumseh believed that Americans were weakening the Indians. He saw the problems that liquor caused among the Indians, and he knew first hand that the desire for furs was decreasing the number of animals in the forest. Tecumseh abhorred the turning away from the Indian way and wanted the Indians to return to their previous way of existence, one of living off the land and not at the mercy of traders. Tecumseh, while recognizing the gunpowder and the rifle as powerful weapons, believed that the tomahawk and the bow and arrow were the true weapons of the Indians. Tecumseh knew that Indians could not manufacture lead or gunpowder and had to rely on traders for their hand-outs. Tecumseh did not want the Indians to have to rely on anyone at anytime.

86. Revolutionary War & War Of 1812 Study
american Battlefield Protection Program of the National Park Service.
http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/rev1812.htm
Welcome to the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Historic Preservation Study website. Congress authorized the study in 1996 because many historic sites of the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 are at risk from rapid urban or suburban development. The goals of the study are 1) to gather current information about the significance of, current condition of, and threats to the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 sites, and 2) to present preservation and interpretation alternatives for the sites. Through research and public comments, the NPS identified 2,742 sites of known battle actions and historic places associated with both wars. The study Advisory Committee determined that 811 sites represent the principal historic events of the two wars. With our public and private partners, the NPS surveyed each of the principal sites ( Scope and Research Methodology ). These sites are found in 31 states and the District of Columbia. Data gathered during field surveys will help the NPS evaluate the current level of preservation at these sites and make recommendations for further protection and interpretation. For more information about the study, please contact:
