The War of 1812
A Short History Donald R. Hickey This abridged version of Donald Hickey's popular The War of 1812: A Forgotten Conflict focuses on the military campaigns as well as the political and diplomatic history of the war. Intended for a general audience and students in introductory and upper division United States history courses, the volume is gripping reading. It includes a chronology of major events during the war and a list of further suggested reading. From reviews of Hickey's earlier book, The War of 1812: A Forgotten Conflict "The definitive study." Douglas R. Egerton, Journal of American History "A careful, accurate, solid account. . . . Hickey's reliable study makes the war more accessible and understandable." Roger H. Brown, Reviews in American History "Adeptly presents both details and overviews of the War of 1812 in a very readable manner. . . . A very useful work." L. E. Babits, Choice "A balanced assessment. . . . Hickey has succeeded in the difficult task of providing a scholarly, reliable, general account of the complicated history of the War of 1812." Noble E. Cunningham, Jr.

written by Anthony Wonderley, Ph.D - Nation Historian Members of a sovereign nation, Oneidas feel they can't be forced morally or legally to serve in the armed forces of another nation. But they have always volunteered to fight on behalf of the American government. Oneidas have served in the armed forces of the United States from the Revolutionary War to Desert Storm. Well over 100 Oneidas (out of a total population of some 650) fought on the American side during the British-American struggle called the War of 1812 (1812-1814). They fought in several battles (including virtually the only American victories) on two fronts. Oneidas were active on the Northern New York Frontier around Sackets Harbor, New York, the major U.S. naval base on Lake Ontario, and they fought near Buffalo on the Canadian side of the Niagara River. Part of Ontario today, that region then was called the Niagara Frontier by the Americans and Upper Canada by the English and British Canadians. Oneida sentiments were expressed in the Six Nations declaration of war in July of 1813: "we do hereby command and advise all the War Chiefs to call forth immediately their warriors under them to put them in motion to protect their rights and liberties which our brethren the Americans are now defending" (Babcock 1927:108). Several days earlier, an Iroquois speaker had told his people "that the country was invaded, that they had one common interest with the people of the United States, that they had every thing dear at stake, that the time had arrived for them to show their friendship for their brethren of the United States not only in words but in deeds" (Snyder 1978:69).

AMAZON STORE DRINK FICTION FOOD ... CONTRIBUTE ZED by Gabrielle Taylor June 11, 2000 As I mentioned previously, last time Canada went to war with the US, we made an honest attempt to burn the White House . Of course, Canada wasn't properly a country then it would not be formally incorporated until with the British North America Act and it wasn't the White House yet either, not until it was whitewashed to cover the scorch marks. Britannica calls it a British raiding party, which is a bit like calling Alexander the Great a Pelasgian I am speaking of the most unpopular war in American history, being the War of 1812, a war so traumatic it has to be relived at every sporting event in Star Spangled form, though not formally until 1931. As a sidenote, we didn't get a formal anthem in Canada until 1980; we might've had a coupon for a free anthem with every Bill of Rights. It's odd that a country as militant and powerful as the US would have an anthem based on one of its few unsuccessful military campaigns. The War of 1812 was less popular than Vietnam and the results no better than a draw. Yet every time a President is sworn in, every World Series, and every Olympic gold medal commemorates a bizarre holding action that nobody was all that interested in perpetrating at the time. The Canadian national anthem lyrics were originally a French poem by a French justice set to music first performed in Montreal on June 24, St. Jean-Baptiste Day, 1880. Various translations to English appeared, with the least militant or religious one coming from another judge in 1908. This would become the official English version, likely by virtue of being much duller than the original French, which had nobody "on guard for thee" but an enthusiastic endorsement of making "thy arm ready to wield the sword".

Apart from its intrinsic interest, history can often shed light on current political controversies. Many political disputes revolve around questions of economics and of all the matters that fall under the purview of economic history there is one that has had, and still has, a profound impact on many aspects of everyone's daily life, and that is money. This essay is based on a book on monetary history by Glyn Davies which contains a considerable amount of material on the financial development of the United States.

Old war's victims forgotten no longer [Privateers of War of 1812 buried in Halifax] Colin Nickerson, Boston Globe Staff, 5/12/2000 Halifax, Nova Scotia - Except for the name, there is nothing to suggest the sad history of Deadman's Island . No plaques, no crosses, no mounds. Just 2.5 acres of forlorn bogland surmounted by a spruce knoll. The site isn't even a true island but a spit of land jutting into Halifax Harbor's Northwest Arm. But in this unhallowed ground, forgotten by the country that sent them off to fight, lie the bodies of 188 American sailors and soldiers taken prisoner by British regulars and Canadian colonial forces during the War of 1812 ''No doubt their loved ones wept, but they seem to have vanished from the memory of the US,'' said Guy MacLean, a leader of the Northwest Arm Heritage Association and one of the Halifax residents whose recent fight to save Deadman's Island from development ended up pricking the conscience of American veterans groups and, finally, the US government. ''What started as a very local controversy over this land became a history lesson that reverberated on both sides of the border,'' MacLean said.

This campaign includes all operations in the Canadian-American border region except the battle of Chippewa and Lundy's Lane . The invasion and conquest of Canada was a major objective of the United States in the War of 1812. Among the significant causes of the war were the continuing clash of British and American interests in the Northwest Territory and the desire of frontier expansionists to seize Canada while Great Britain was preoccupied with the Napoleonic Wars. Chippewa, 5 July 1814 . An American advance from Plattsburg in March 1814, led by Maj. Gen. James Wilkinson, was checked just beyond the border, but on 3 July 3,500 men under General Brown seized Fort Erie across the Niagara in a coordinated attack with Commodore Isaac Chauncey's fleet designed to wrest control of Lake Ontario from the British. In subsequent troop maneuvers in the Niagara region, Brig. Gen. Winfield Scott's brigade (1,300 men) of Brown's command was unexpectedly confronted by a large British force while preparing for an Independence Day parade (5 July 1814) near the Chippewa River. Scott's well-trained troops broke the enemy line with a skillfully executed charge, sending the survivors into a hasty retreat. British losses were 137 killed and 304 wounded; American, 48 killed and 227 wounded.
