American Treasures of the Library of Congress
James Montgomery Flagg, creator of this illustration of Uncle Sam, was born on June 18 , 1877 in Pelham Manor, New York. Flagg claimed his illustration, an indelible American icon, had become the most famous poster in the world. An illustrator and portrait artist best known for his commercial art, Flagg contributed forty-six works in support of the war effort during the First World War. Leslie's Weekly first published his picture of Uncle Sam as the cover of the July 6, 1916 issue with the title "What Are You Doing for Preparedness?". Over four million copies were printed between 1917 and 1918. The image was also used extensively during World War II. In 1961, Congress passed a resolution which officially recognized meat packer Samuel Wilson (1766-1854), who supplied meat to the army during the War of 1812, as Uncle Sam's namesake. Wilson is reputed to have been a man of great fairness, reliability, and honesty who was devoted to his country.

BY KEYWORD:

The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and Great Britain from 1812 until 1815. The war occurred for several reasons. During the late 1700s and the early 1800s, England was at war with France. England began to face a shortage of skilled sailors. To acquire more men for its navy, Great Britain began to stop American ships and impress (kidnap) sailors off of them. England also tried to prevent United States farmers from trading with the French. Finally, English soldiers occupied territory belonging to the United States, despite Great Britain's promise to remove these soldiers in the Treaty of Paris (1783) at the end of the American Revolution. Most of the men were located along the Great Lakes, providing Indians, like Tecumseh, with support for their battles against American settlers. In 1812, President James Madison could no longer stand for England's actions and asked the United States Congress to declare war. The first battles of the war occurred in 1813. The United States hoped to invade Canada, but England successfully rebuffed the assault. America did have two important victories, though: the victory of Oliver Hazard Perry at the Battle of Lake Erie, giving the United States control of that Great Lake, and the Battle of the Thames, where General William Henry Harrison defeated a combined English and Indian force led by Henry Procter and Tecumseh. Tecumseh died in the battle. In 1814, the war turned against the Americans. An English army captured and held Washington, DC, for a brief period. Before the British evacuated the city, they set fire to several of the buildings, including the White House. By late 1814, both the Americans and the English were ready to conclude the war. The two sides would sign the Treaty of Ghent on December 24, 1814. Before news of the peace treaty reached the soldiers in America, one final battle, the Battle of New Orleans, occurred in January 1815.

  • The tunes here were not all written by Americans, but are songs that were known in America. Most songs of the Colonial and Revoltionary Era were songs that originated in England, Scotland and Ireland and immigrated with their people.
  • These dates are, of course, not perfect. I have struggled to put them in APPROXIMATE/BEST GUESS date order. If you have an educated correction, please let me know. A few tunes are listed more than once to make clear they were popular in several eras.

The little-known role of African-Americans during the War of 1812
By Gerald T. Altoff Pick up a history book. More precisely, open a school text book on American history and turn to the War of 1812 section. Should you be fortunate to find such a section, recounted will be brief accounts of battles at Fort McHenry, New Orleans, and Lake Erie. Conveniently forgotten in American texts is the fact that the United States lost most of the battles and did not clearly win the war. This lack of knowledge makes the War of 1812 not only one of the least known, but also one of the least understood conflicts in American history. Paralleling this lack of knowledge is the little known role of African Americans in the War of 1812. African-American men freely volunteered during the war, but their services were not readily accepted. Prior to the war, the United States maintained a standing army of fewer than 7,000 men. Such being the case, the country was dependent upon the various state militias to cope with military emergencies. The Federal Militia Act of 7 May 1792 stipulated that every “free able-bodied white male citizen...who is or shall be of the age of eighteen years, and under the age of forty-five years...shall be enrolled in the Militia...” Service by black Americans was not specified, so each state adapted its own interpretation. Many black volunteers served in state militias before the war, but their role was largely relegated to that of servants or laborers. However, the lack of military success in 1812 and 1813 soon changed perspectives. By 1814, northern states like Pennsylvania and New York were recruiting entire regiments of black troops, and even some southern states like Louisiana and North Carolina were mustering black soldiers.

American History
Well what in the world is a history page doing on John's construction services web site? As if there isn't enough clutter around here as it is. Clutter or not, history is another of my off duty pursuits. American History is fascinating, particularly the history of the Founding Period and the events leading up to it. A great experiment in freedom was launched . . . at the right time, in the right place, and with the right people. To my knowledge, the feat has never been duplicated. Imitated perhaps, but not repeated to this day. As I sketched out this page, I thought of putting a forum on it, a place where amateur historians (and real historians, if they had a mind to) could get together to discuss the events and characters connected with the founding of our nation. But either there is not enough interest, or this page has not been found by enough people to make a forum worthwhile. The latter is hopefully the case, and perhaps in the future we can get a full-blown message board going here. When I was first exposed to the Internet it was through America Online. AOL had a Revolutionary War Forum that was pretty good, but as it went along it got a little rowdy (the Rev War was being fought all over again), and AOL dropped it. I began looking around for other sites.
