Chapter 6 THE WAR OF 1812 Extracted from AMERICAN MILITARY HISTORY ARMY HISTORICAL SERIES OFFICE OF THE CHIEF OF MILITARY HISTORY UNITED STATES ARMY CHAPTER 6 The War of 1812 To Great Britain the War of I8I2 was simply a burdensome adjunct of its greater struggle against Napoleonic France. To the Canadians it was clearly a case of naked American aggression. But to the Americans it was neither simple nor clear. The United States entered the war with confused objectives and divided loyalties and made peace without settling any of the issues that had induced the nation to go to war. Origins of the War The immediate origins of the war were seizure of American ships, insults and injuries to American seamen by the British Navy, and rapid expansion of the American frontier. The British outrages at sea took two distinct forms. One was the seizure and forced sale of merchant ships and their cargoes for allegedly violating the British blockade of Europe. Although France had declared a counterblockade of the British Isles and had seized American ships, England was the chief offender because its Navy had greater command of the seas. The second, more insulting, type of outrage was the capture of men from American vessels for forced service in the Royal Navy. The pretext for impressment was the search for deserters, who, the British claimed, had taken employment on American vessels. The reaction in the United States to impressment differed from that aroused by the seizure of ships and cargoes. In the latter case the maritime interests of the eastern seaboard protested vigorously and demanded naval protection, but rather than risk having their highly profitable trade cut off by war with England they were willing to take an occasional loss of cargo. Impressment, on the other hand, presented no such financial hardship to the shipowners, whatever the consequences for the unfortunate seamen, and the maritime interests tended to minimize it.

War of 1812 War of 1812 ... Summary: The War of 1812 is one of the forgotten wars of the United States. The war lasted for over two years, and while it ended much like it started; in stalemate; it was in fact a war that once and for all confirmed American Independence. The offensive actions of the United States failed in every attempt to capture Canada. On the other hand, the British army was successfully stopped when it attempted to capture Baltimore and New Orleans. There were a number of American naval victories in which American vessels proved themselves superior to similarly sized British vessels. These victories coming after victories in the Quasi War (an even more forgotten war) launched American naval traditions. The following entries were taken from the War of 1812 section of the MultiEducator CD Rom entitled: "New Nation: America 1787-1820"

Star-Spangled Banner and the War of 1812
A fter the American Revolution ended in victory at Yorktown in 1781, a second war with Great Britain broke out in 1812 over impressment, trade issues, and territorial expansion. The United States won early victories in the Atlantic and on Lake Erie, but by 1814 the British blockade of the American coast kept American merchant vessels and warships confined in their home ports. With the defeat of the French emperor Napoleon's armies in Europe, Great Britain turned its full attention to ending U.S. forays into Canada. Admiral Alexander Cochrane, a British naval commander, was ordered to attack U.S. coastal areas, and Gen. Robert Ross prepared to capture towns along the East Coast to create diversions while British army forces attacked along the northern boundaries of the United States. Ross and Cochrane knew that an attack on Washington, D.C., would deal a severe blow to American pride. Late in the summer of 1814, British soldiers and sailors landed at Benedict, Maryland. They marched towards Washington, defeated an American force at the Battle of Bladensburg, and occupied the nation's capital on August 24. The British invaders burned the President's House and other public buildings before marching back to their ships. During their departure they arrested Dr. William Beanes of Upper Marlboro, said to be responsible for the arrest of British stragglers and deserters during the campaign, and imprisoned him on a British warship in the Chesapeake Bay near the mouth of the Potomac.

The War Of 1812 The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and Great Britain from June 1812 to the spring of 1815, although the peace treaty ending the war was signed in Europe in December 1814. The main land fighting of the war occurred along the Canadian border, in the Chesapeake Bay region, and along the Gulf of Mexico; extensive action also took place at sea. Background From the end of the American Revolution in 1783, the United States had been irritated by the failure of the British to withdraw from American territory along the Great Lakes; their backing of the Indians on America's frontiers; and their unwillingness to sign commercial agreements favorable to the United States. American resentment grew during the French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802) and the Napoleonic Wars (1803-15), in which Britain and France were the main combatants. The United States at first attempted to change the policies of the European powers by economic means. In 1807, after the British ship Leopard fired on the American frigate CHESAPEAKE, President Thomas Jefferson urged and Congress passed an EMBARGO ACT banning all American ships from foreign trade. The embargo failed to change British and French policies but devastated New England shipping. Later and weaker economic measures were also unsuccessful. Failing in peaceful efforts and facing an economic depression, some Americansbegan to argue for a declaration of war to redeem the national honor. The Congress that was elected in 1810 and met in November 1811 included a group known as the War Hawks who demanded war against Great Britain. These men were all Democratic-Republicans and mostly from the West and South. Among their leaders were John C. Calhoun of South Carolina, Henry Clay of Kentucky, and Felix Grundy of Tennessee. They argued that American honor could be saved and British policies changed by an invasion of Canada. The FEDERALIST PARTY, representing New England shippers who foresaw the ruination of their trade, opposed war.
