Customer Reviews I have heard Eugene Schwartz lecture in many settings, and I always assumed that his remarkable combination of erudition and hipness, intensity and humor, could never be captured in a book. That is, until I read "Millennial Child." This is a book that places the "alternative" Waldorf schooling method squarely in the modern world. The first part of this book is a powerful and insightful critique of twentieth-century childrearing theories, with a look to the cascading damage they have done our children. The rest of the book examines the contributions that Waldorf schools may make towards the healing of today's children. If you can read only one book on Waldorf or on education in general - this is the one! Education. It's one of the most important parts of childhood. And one of the most controversial. For years, we have been arguing over which are better: public schools, private schools, home schools, alternative schools… But how does it really break down? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Is there really a method of education that stands out as being clearly better than the rest? I have my opinion, as do probably most of you. I don't think it's a very difficult thing to analyze, but from what I've seen, the arguments often revolve around unimportant things like admissions and testing and vouchers and so on. The truly important things are what I will focus on. In the sections that follow, I'm going to share with you some of the conventional wisdom of the day, as well as some of the common misconceptions. Let's start with: Public Schools I went to a small public school in a rural area. My graduating class had about 125 students. At the time I was a student there, the grading system was tough. A 75 percent was the lowest you could achieve without failing. A 90 percent was still a "B." Some said this was a great idea… it made the students strive for higher grades to pull out that "A"… a 93 instead of a 90. On the other hand, it was balanced with an idea that was as stupid as the other was good: the highest grade one could get was a 98 percent. Why? Well, the best reasoning I could come up with was this: "No one is perfect." A 100 percent would imply perfection, and that just couldn't be.

U.S. Teacher Education/Practice Glossary Certification. A process through which teachers become recognized by a state as expert teachers. Although sometimes used synonymously, this term is different from a "licensure," in which a teacher is approved to practice teaching but is not considered an expert. Teaching licensure must be renewed but certification often provides a permanent credential. Cooperative learning. Teaching methods in which students work together, with the goal of establishing such principles as positive interdependence, individual accountability, group interaction, and social skills. Direct Instruction. A teaching method based on behaviorism that focuses on identifying standard teaching procedures that lead to measurable results, with an early focus on skills (reading, sentence patterns, logical thinking) rather than content-based learning. Experiential education.

Description of this type of school/schooling method:
The Waldorf School was established in 1919 based on the writings and belief system of Rudolph Steiner. Steiner believed that children evolved in three stages: pre-k and kindergarten; 1st-8th grade; and high school.
Educators are trained for two years to teach at a Waldorf school.
In pre-k and kindergarten, children are nurtured physically, emotionally and mentally. The focus is on creative play and work based activities for learning.

Soul Economy and Waldorf Education
16 lectures by Rudolf Steiner
This important course on education shows how the healthy development of the physical body forms the basis for the free development of children's soul and spirit. Too often in modern education, the enthusiasm for imparting information becomes a substitute for developing human faculties. This can lead to an overtaxing of memory and inner exhaustion of students instead of healthy development. In Waldorf education, the emphasis is on the efficient use of soul energy in developing real capacities in children. The aims of Waldorf education are to arrange the entire teaching in such a way that within the shortest time the maximum amount of content can be given to the pupils with the simplest means possible. This helps the children to retain an overall view of their subjects, not so much intellectually but very much with regard to their feeling life.
It is obvious that such a method makes great demands upon the teacher. I feel convinced that if a teacher applies this method - which I should like to call a teaching based on "soul economy" - he or she will have to spend at least two or three hours of concentrated preparation in order to teach for about half an hour . . . this kind of private preparation is of fundamental importance.

They are familiar with knitting, crochet, cross-stitch, and hand and machine sewing. Their minds have been stretched to think three-dimensionally and to create patterns for stuffed animals. They have also been introduced to the sewing machine with its mystique of buttons and burst of speed. Through a broad range of handwork experience, the students have encountered creative impulses in one another. Is it any wonder that these same students are later able to design baskets, create rich woven fabrics, or bind books in the high school? Twelfth Grade handwork involves the selection of an individual project to be designed and completed over the course of the year. The student, with a sense of confidence and professionalism, now desires to delve into a particular craft to see where he or she might contribute something unique.

About a dozen students stand in a circle, repeating a phrase as they quickly pass bean bags from hand to hand. "Giving and receiving, through us love is weaving," they chant. At Cincinnati Waldorf School in Winton Place, exercises like this one - which relates to a morning class on saints - are a daily part of the curriculum. It's a private school where reading is downplayed, the seasons are celebrated and beeswax is preferred to Barbie dolls. The Waldorf system, started by Austrian philosopher and scientist Rudolf Steiner in 1919 at the end of World War I, is the fastest-growing independent school movement in the world. However, the system is not without critics who think the schools are inherently pagan, often racist and covertly religious.More than 800 Waldorf schools exist worldwide, including 170 in the United States. The Winton Place campus, which is not affiliated with any religion, is the only Waldorf school in the Tristate.

Dear Joan and others
I apologize if others have already responded to this message but I'm a bit
behind on my mail. I found your description of the Waldorf approach (method?
theory?) very interesting, but I also found it to be somewhat stilted. As an
early childhood teacher for many years I find that listening, speaking, reading,
and writing cannot be separated out all that neatly as you describe. I teach in
an international school in Ecuador and my students are over 90% Spanish speakers learning English as a second language. My students listen, speak, read, and write as needed and as they are "ready", often from the first day of school. I would never dream of asking them to wait to listen to stories being told (a laudable activity in and of itself) before they can attempt to read or write anything. This does not seem natural to me.

Waldorf Education for me is about teaching them to learn for themselves. Under a Waldorf system daily, weekly, yearly rhythm is important therefore formal learning for us just becomes a part of the daily rhythm.
I start each day with a rhythmic part which contains things like singing, speech exercises, counting and mental arithmetic done with movement like walking, finger exercises, action songs or verses.and playing a song together on the lyre. This rhythmic part was quite intense in our first year but is less so in our second year . Also counting has given way to working on multiples instead.
Then I deliver the main lesson. Whether it be a story, poem or some hands on activity. As the main lesson goes on for three weeks sometimes I do a puppet show with the story and only give bits at a time. This way they are always looking forward to what is going to happening next.
After this we do our practical work whether it be writing, maths problems, or learning how to use the information from our stories. Then a drawing, making something, or painting a pitcture is done. This is followed by either music or painting.
Craft is next. It can be an ongoing project like knitting or candle making where we make a different sort of candle each day. The whole lesson only ever goes for about three hours on three days a week.

  • A method of instruction that integrates literature, the arts, and an appreciation the natural sciences into a child's development and education. Private Waldorf schools have existed in the United States since 1928. Within the last decade, approximately a dozen public schools have adopted Waldorf methods. Waldorf parents include Paul Newman, Joe Namath, and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Waldorf graduates have included Victor Naavasky, publisher of The Nation and Ken Chenault, president of American Express. Waldorf requires intense parental involvement in their children's school and education. Waldorf schools were first opened in Germany but closed by the Nazis. Waldorf instruction aims to create life-long lovers of learning and the arts. Waldorf students score at or above average on standardized tests and score significantly above average in the upper grades. The Sacramento City Unified School District Waldorf methods program requires a comprehensive parent orientation including classroom visits before a child is accepted. The school is a magnet school where parents make the choice whether to enroll their children.
