Learning Our Lessons Education. It's one of the most important parts of childhood. And one of the most controversial. For years, we have been arguing over which are better: public schools, private schools, home schools, alternative schools But how does it really break down? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Is there really a method of education that stands out as being clearly better than the rest? I have my opinion, as do probably most of you. I don't think it's a very difficult thing to analyze, but from what I've seen, the arguments often revolve around unimportant things like admissions and testing and vouchers and so on. The truly important things are what I will focus on. In the sections that follow, I'm going to share with you some of the conventional wisdom of the day, as well as some of the common misconceptions. Let's start with: Public Schools I went to a small public school in a rural area. My graduating class had about 125 students. At the time I was a student there, the grading system was tough. A 75 percent was the lowest you could achieve without failing. A 90 percent was still a "B." Some said this was a great idea it made the students strive for higher grades to pull out that "A" a 93 instead of a 90. On the other hand, it was balanced with an idea that was as stupid as the other was good: the highest grade one could get was a 98 percent. Why? Well, the best reasoning I could come up with was this: "No one is perfect." A 100 percent would imply perfection, and that just couldn't be.

I found your description of the Waldorf approach (method? theory?) very interesting, but I also found it to be somewhat stilted. As an early childhood teacher for many years I find that listening, speaking, reading, and writing cannot be separated out all that neatly as you describe. I teach in an international school in Ecuador and my students are over 90% Spanish speakers learning English as a second language. My students listen, speak, read, and write as needed and as they are "ready", often from the first day of school. I would never dream of asking them to wait to listen to stories being told (a laudable activity in and of itself) before they can attempt to read or write anything. This does not seem natural to me.

Waldorf Education for me is about teaching them to learn for themselves. Under a Waldorf system daily, weekly, yearly rhythm is important therefore formal learning for us just becomes a part of the daily rhythm. I start each day with a rhythmic part which contains things like singing, speech exercises, counting and mental arithmetic done with movement like walking, finger exercises, action songs or verses.and playing a song together on the lyre. This rhythmic part was quite intense in our first year but is less so in our second year . Also counting has given way to working on multiples instead. Then I deliver the main lesson. Whether it be a story, poem or some hands on activity. As the main lesson goes on for three weeks sometimes I do a puppet show with the story and only give bits at a time. This way they are always looking forward to what is going to happening next. After this we do our practical work whether it be writing, maths problems, or learning how to use the information from our stories. Then a drawing, making something, or painting a pitcture is done. This is followed by either music or painting. Craft is next. It can be an ongoing project like knitting or candle making where we make a different sort of candle each day. The whole lesson only ever goes for about three hours on three days a week.
