Two preschools offer an alternative by Jayson Sargent The Northeast Kingdom has two alternative preschools: a Waldorf school and a Montessori school. Michelle Wildflower operates a Montessori School from her home in Westmore, taking children ages three to six. She began the school last fall and now has seven students. Montessori is a method that grew out of a social movement that took place in Italy in the early part of the twentieth century. Led by Maria Montessori (1870-1952), Italy's first female doctor, the movement pressed for economic justice for children and families and a better, more personal education system. The first Montessori school was founded in 1907. "She had such phenomenal results with her first school, which was for poor, disadvantaged kids from the slums of Rome, that she wondered what results she might have with regular kids," said Ms. Wildflower. What happened next revolutionized education in Italy. There are now over 4,000 Montessori schools in Europe. One of Montessori's tenets is that children learn through movement, Ms. Wildflower said. Children need to touch and move in order to learn, and to have free access to many stimulating endeavors which they can choose from however and whenever they please. In the Montessori method, the environment is tightly controlled. There are play stations that teach different facts and sciences through puzzles, maps and games. But no attempt is made to control the children's activities. This system is called a "prepared environment," said Ms. Wildflower. "It's not abandonment, though. The children use the materials in the way they are intended to be used." That is where adult guidance comes in.

In looking at this from that standpoint you need to go back to Steiner's beliefs and views about form drawing. Form drawing is the basis for for the development of fine motor skills as a preparation for writing. Remember, the movement of the hand also educates the brain. From the book Form Drawing Grades One through Four: "It is part of the evolution of art and, as such, develops the aesthetic sense and a feeling for form. It also teaches thinking but not in a non-intellectual way; it trains the intelligence to be flexible, able to follow and understand a complicated line of thought." A child experiences the forms and this develops the will forces. It is a way of "seeing" with the hands. Rudolf Steiner said "the line is the subject and not a picture of something in the outer world". This is also why when form drawing you should not allow the child to color in between the forms and lines. Children in Waldorf schools learn very significantly through the arts. In looking at work for the first grade, following Steiner's indications, we would begin with two lines: the straight and the curved. The first year is the year when the child gains uprightness - so in this posture the child actually "draws" this form with her upright body. So you see it's not just about drawing a line or letters or writing words... the reasons Steiner set forth for his specific methods of teaching go much deeper and as a Waldorf home educator you really do need to do the homework to understand completely what is going on. How To Raise Smart Kids In A Modern World An Essay by M.C.Robert Since 1990, the world has seen remarkable advances in technology. Technology can be destructive, but it can also be extremely constructive. As parents, we have three basic choices (or a combination of them): raise our kids with little or no modern technology, raise our kids using all technology available, or raise our kids using technology selectively. Let me give you some examples of each. Many parents are deliberately choosing to raise their children without technology. These are the people who refuse to allow a television in their home, insist that their children only play with all-natural toys, and subscribe to organic approaches to learning such as the Waldorf method of education. This is certainly a valid philosophical choice, and one that is apt to produce a thoughtful, gentle, and capable citizen. As parents, however, we need to remember not to dominate the lives of our children. We need to allow them to explore the world around them. To do this, we need to orchestrate their world; to set up their environment in a way that allows them every possible opportunity to develop their brains and to explore their world productively. Children will play with virtually anything we give them. If we only provide them with toys having educational value, they will learn to love and value education naturally. Technology is, in fact, changing the average intelligence of Americans. In the seventies, it was well-known that the average I.Q. of Americans was 100. Largely due to technology, it is now known that this average I.Q. has increased. In other words, the average I.Q. of American children may well now be 110. As parents, we can use this information to our advantage.
