This site is intended to supplement the reading of Henry Nash Smith's book, Virgin Land: The American West as Symbol and Myth, as part of a classroom project to enhance the teaching and understanding of this book by exploring in depth issues, topics, and texts discussed in Nash's orginal work. The images and opinions expressed here represent my own critical views of Smith's discussion of Buffalo Bill, and are not to be confused with Smith's own views or with the original text of Virgin Land. I ntroduction
Henry Nash Smith's discussion of Buffalo Bill deals exclusively with the literary portrayals of William Cody's persona and the powerful and enduring legacy he helped to create. The Buffalo Bill dime novels of Ned Buntline and Prentiss Ingraham enjoyed enormous success in the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries, but the real William Cody transformed the literary and stage character into the phenomenon that was Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, easily the most successful tour de force in travelling entertainment during the late 1800's. Nash concerns himself with popular literature, but Cody's nomadic brigade of entertainers has its own mythic tale to tell about the American West. Combined with Buntline's imagination and Ingraham's aggressive publicizing, Cody's affinity for drama and the limelight spurred him to conceive the fantastic world of the Wild West Show. The immensity of the show and the exaggerated dramas of life on the frontier entrenched the images of the wild west in the minds of Americans and the rest of the world during the show's existence. Perpetual stereotypes and images of the west such as the cowboy-and-Indian battle, the circular stagecoach camp, and the buffalo hunt originated under Cody's staging and direction.

Atlanta, GA 30334 West Nile Virus Questions and Answers We have received numerous questions about West Nile Virus. With the assistance of the Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Public Health we have answered some of the questions about the human aspects of West Nile Virus, and our own staff here at the Georgia Department of Agriculture has answered other questions about West Nile Virus that relate to agriculture and areas that we regulate. If you need more information, please contact us at 404-656-3689 or 1-800-282-5852. What is West Nile Virus?
West Nile Virus (WNV) is one of several viruses spread by mosquitoes. It is closely related to St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus. SLE virus is most prevalent in the Southeast and Midwest U.S. WNV is also found in Africa, Europe, and Asia (primarily in countries bordering the Mediterranean). Infection with this virus does not always result in clinical disease. Studies have shown that normally only a small percentage of humans infected with the virus will show symptoms of disease and even fewer will develop any serious complications. Should I be worried about West Nile Virus?

West Nile Virus Vaccine
Thomas P. Monath*, Juan Arroyo, Chuck Miller and Farshad Guirakhoo Acambis Inc., 38 Sidney Street, Cambridge Massachusetts 02139, USA Abstract: Within the past 5 years, West Nile encephalitis has emerged as an important disease of humans and horses in Europe. In 1999, the disease appeared for the first time in the northeastern United States. West Nile virus (a mosquito-borne flavivirus) has flourished in the North American ecosystem and is expected to expand its geographic range. In this review, the rationale for a human and veterinary vaccine is presented and a novel approach for rapid development of a molecularly- defined, live, attenuated vaccine is described. The technology (ChimeriVax™) is applicable to the development of vaccines against all flaviviruses, and products against Japanese encephalitis (a close relative of West Nile) and dengue are in or are nearing clinical trials, respectively. ChimeriVax™ vaccines utilize the safe and effective vaccine against the prototype flavivirus -yellow fever 17D- as a live vector. Infectious clone technology is used to replace the genes encoding the pre-membrane (prM) and envelope (E) protein of yellow fever 17D vaccine with the corresponding genes of the target virus (e.g. West Nile). The resulting chimeric virus contains the antigens responsible for protection against West Nile but retains the replication efficiency of yellow fever 17D. The ChimeriVax™ technology is well-suited to the rapid development of a West Nile vaccine, and clinical trials could begin as early as mid-2002. Other approaches to vaccine development are briefly reviewed.

Bio Claria, Litigation, and the Wild West BY Jeremy Lockhorn Last week, I heard my officemate muttering something under his breath about the Wild West. Curious as to how this related to the frontier, I had to inquire.

Big Trouble: A Murder in a Small Western Town Sets Off a Struggle for the Soul of America
By J. Anthony Lukas American history is widely interpreted as the pre-eminent refutation of Karl Marx's social and political theories. Ironically, though, it was in the United States, between 1890 and 1915, that something very close to Marx's vision of class warfare unfoldednot, as Marx might have predicted, in the nation's industrial centers or financial capitals, but in the mining and logging camps of the West. Lacking a sizable middle class of farmers and shopkeepers (who would arrive only after World War I), and undergoing intense and rapid capitalist development, large portions of Colorado, Nevada, and Idaho became sharply polarized along class lines"labor in one camp, the employers in another, no in-between camp, with government a football between the two," according to the final volume of John R. Commons and associates' venerable History of Labor in the United States Western miners and loggers defended themselves and their jobs with rifles and dynamite. They also created some of the most incendiary labor organizations ever seen, above all the Western Federation of Miners. Their employers were no less violence-prone. Timber magnates and mine owners deployed armed Pinkertons and strikebreakers as if they were baronial armies. When private force failed, employers persuaded local and state governments to suspend due process of law, arrest suspected troublemakers, initiate mass deportations, and crush strikes with National Guardsmenusing what Commons and his associates called all "the paraphernalia of dictatorship."

In a conversation with us several years ago, the Kiowa poet N. Scott Momaday remarked that the American West "is a place that has to be seen to be believed, and it may have to be believed in order to be seen." For five years we have travelled that landscape, photographed its vistas, talked to its people, sought out its history, all as part of our production of THE WEST, an eight-part documentary series for public television. Now 100,000 air-miles and 72 filmed interviews and 74 visits to archives and collections and more than 250 hours of film later we have begun to understand at least something of what Momaday meant.
