Wenmiao (Confucian Temple)
Situated in the southeastern part of Wuwei, Wenmiao is a complex of structures built in palace style in 1439 during the Ming Dynasty. It was expanded time and again in the following centuries and gradually became the "number one institute of learning in Longyou (areas west of the Liupan Mountains and east of the Yellow River in Gansu)." Facing south and covering an area of 1,500 square meters, the temple was where intellectuals pursued further studies and offered sacrifices to Confucius in ancient times. Wenmiao has many stone inscriptions, the best-known of which are the ones that record in ancient Uygur script the deeds of the king of Gaochang and the deeds of Lord Wang Xindu from Xining as well as the one that records in the Han and Western Xia scripts the story about the reconstruction of the Ganyingta (Pagoda of Heavenly Reward and Retribution) in Huguosi (Temple of State Protection). Wenmiao also houses the Wuwei Museum.

The Not So Wild Wild West: "hard work, trade, tedium, and peace"
Brian Micklethwait today on Samizdata comments on the myth of the "Wild West " that some of us have for years known as a myth: One of the most potent anti-liberty memes has been that simple phrase, the "Wild West". Wild as in lawless, violent, murderous. And one of the most potent pro-liberty memes is therefore, if only because it negates the first meme, the fact that the Wild West was, in the words of a famous Journal of Libertarian Studies article by Terry Anderson , the Not So Wild Wild West This anti-"Wild West" meme deserves wider propagation. This Old West project has a companion People of the West page. Don't miss it!
Easier - Sometimes people talk about the 'West,' the 'Wild West,' or the 'Old West.' They are usually referring to the people and events of the western region of the United States during the second half of the 1800's. Harder - The romantic view of the Old West can be seen in western movies and novels that depict the Wild West as a time of gunfights, gambling, and Indian attacks. In reality, most inhabitants of the West didn't carry a gun or participate in shootouts. A century ago the American West was a rough and wild place. Far from the control of the US government in the East, the Old West was ruled by its own set of laws. In the early 1840s, settlers began moving toward the Pacific Northwest. After gold was found in California in the mid 1800s, people began to flood the west in search of their fortune. Next, cowboys began rounding up wild cattle and organizing herds. The pony express, the stagecoach, and ultimately the Transcontinental Railroad and the telegraph began to join the East and the West. By 1900, the range was fenced in to create ranches, the Native Americans moved to reservations, and many frontier towns became well-established cities.

Cast Actor Part Photo Description Robert Conrad (Colonel) James West A former US Cavalry officer, James fought for the Union in the Civil War. After the war, he joined the Secret Service. Somewhere along the way he learned an early form of martial arts, and was lightning fast and a crack shot with a pistol. He also carried a variety of gadgets, including lockpicks, hidden throwing knives, trick boots with spring-loaded knives, and hold-out derringers. Ross Martin Artemis Gordon A more cerebral partner to the more action-oriented West, Artie helped pull James out of any number of death traps with a disguise or a well-placed smoke bomb. Its also likely that he created a number of James' gadgets. Despite being the flamboyant showman, a master of disguise, and a mechanical genius, little is known of Artie's past. At some point, it included the stage. That's probably where he learned how to hypnotize and to resist being hypnotized. Michael Dunn Doctor Miguelito Loveless A dwarf of a man with a giant intellect and even larger hatred of the world and of James West. The most potent threat James and Artie ever encountered, and the most re-occurring.

Eventually, 62 cases of the disease were confirmed; no new cases have been reported since October 16, 1999 ( ). Of the human cases laboratory-confirmed as of October 8, 1999, 70% occurred within a circle 10 km in radius centered in the northern end of the New York City borough of Queens ( ). Coincident in both space and time with the human outbreak was a substantial die-off of birds, particularly American Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) ). Unusual bird deaths were noted around the Bronx Zoo in mid-August ( ), approximately 8 km north of the epicenter of the human epidemic. Several thousand crows and other avian species are presumed to have died of the virus, mostly in and around the New York City area (

The single greatest success story in wildlife management in West Virginia has been the spectacular return of the wild turkey. A major contributor to this success was a program that involved trapping turkeys in areas of relative abundance and releasing them in areas with no turkeys to start new populations. This trap and transfer program evolved largely through an orderly progression of knowledge after the stocking of game farm turkeys was tried, and failed. Years ago, West Virginians saw the wild turkey disappear from most of our state. Concern grew with increasing restrictions placed on hunting, but the wild turkey still disappeared in most of our central, western, and southern counties. Restocking efforts were made by concerned sportsmen and the West Virginia Conservation Commission by raising birds in captivity and releasing them into the wild. Over 5,000 of these game farm turkeys were known to be released without one single successful stocking.

Impacts Of The Eastern Coyote On Wildlife Populations
    Introduction

The Eastern Coyote has only in relative recent times expanded its range to the eastern United States. The coyote has been a significant predator in the west and it will likely prove to have the same impacts in the east.
Historically, the coyote was commonly found in the Great Plains of western and mid-western states. During the last 50 years, expansion of the coyote eastward has come from the northwest and southeast. Today, the coyote occupies every state in the continental United States and ranges from Alaska to the Panama Canal. On their path to the east the coyote hybridized with timber wolves in the north and red wolves in the south and possibly wild dogs. Thus, at 20 to 45 pounds, the eastern coyote is bigger than its western cousin. The eastern expansion of the coyote was probably a result of the elimination of its ancient foe the timber wolf and the establishment of the deer herd in the east as a food base. The coyote is an adaptable animal and there may be more coyotes today than there were in colonial times.

us Departments of Agriculture and Defense, us Fish and active surveillance of resident wild bird species to the susceptibility and virulence of west Nile virus
    http://www.nwhc.usgs.gov/whats_new/fact_sheet/fact_early_detection.html
Fact Sheet: Wild Bird Surveillance Critical for Early Detection of West Nile Virus USGS is coordinating a multi-state surveillance network to detect and monitor the movement of the West Nile Virus in birds, which can contract the disease from mosquitoes. During the fall of 1999, West Nile virus, a mosquito-borne disease never previously reported in the Western hemisphere, caused encephalitis in people in the New York City area. Birds are the natural hosts for this virus, which can be transmitted from infected birds to humans and other animals through bites of infected mosquitoes. USGS scientists and other investigators diagnosed West Nile virus in birds from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Maryland. USGS alerted State and Federal wildlife agencies and dispatched a team of wildlife health specialists from the National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, WI, to New York to determine the bird species involved and the geographic distribution of the virus. Wild bird surveillance will be used for early detection of the virus. Crow samples are especially important because crows appear to be highly sensitive to the virus. Crows can act as sentinels for local transmission of the disease since they normally travel less than 200 miles and generally do not migrate. Infected crows can also help State and local health departments determine the risk to humans.
