White House defends Bush handling of stock sale
Bush: "Everything I do is fully disclosed. It's been fully vetted." From Kelly Wallace CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) The White House Wednesday defended President Bush's handling of a stock sale 12 years ago, arguing the reason Bush failed to disclose the sale promptly under federal law was because of a "mix-up" involving the corporation's attorneys, a different explanation from what Bush himself said in the early 1990s. The transaction has resurfaced in the wake of Wall Street scandals involving companies such as WorldCom and Enron, with Bush himself calling for higher ethical standards for corporate leaders and for those leaders to disclose promptly any sale or purchase of their company's stock.
Form of mix-up
At issue is Bush's sale on June 22, 1990 of 66 percent of his holdings, 212,140 shares of Harken at $4 per share, a sale netting Bush nearly $850,000, at a time when Bush served on the company's board of directors.

White House downplays Newsweek report
Almihdhar, left, and Alhazmi From Kathleen Koch CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) The White House on Sunday played down a Newsweek report that the CIA began tracking two of the September 11 hijackers nearly two years before the attacks, but didn't inform other agencies until last August that at least one of them had entered the United States. A senior administration official urged people "not to rush to judgment based on a single report ... coming to light without context and input from a variety of different parties." The official said the CIA was first alerted to the activities of Nawaf Alhazmi and Khalid Almihdhar during the Clinton administration. On September 11, the men were aboard American Airlines Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon, killing 189 people. The official added that Bush officials were "going to wait and see" what the House and Senate Intelligence committees find in their joint investigation.

White House to hold summit on children
Samantha Runnion, 5, was kidnapped and brutally killed last month. WASHINGTON (CNN) President Bush announced plans Tuesday for a White House summit next month on missing, exploited and runaway children. "The kidnapping or murder of a child is every parent's worst nightmare," Bush said in a Rose Garden ceremony. The announcement comes in the wake of a rash of abductions and killings of children, including the recent death of 5-year-old Samantha Runnion. "Our nation has come to know the names and faces of too many wonderful children, because they've been the victims of dispicable violence," Bush said. The Justice Department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children also plan to take part in the September 24 summit. WASHINGTON (CNN) The White House said Friday it is "actively engaged" in the effort to peacefully resolve the political crisis in Haiti and called on President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to honor past commitments to give opposition movements a greater voice in the government. The Bush administration's involvement is through the Organization of American States, which has drafted a plan to present to Aristide and his political opponents, White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan told reporters. "We are actively engaged in ongoing diplomatic efforts to bring about a peaceful resolution to the situation in Haiti," he said.

White House: Arafat has yet to earn Bush's trust
WASHINGTON (CNN) Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat still has to earn President Bush's confidence on the issues of governing by the rule of law and cracking down on corruption as well as curbing terrorism, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Friday. He also said that while a "ministerial meeting" Secretary of State Colin Powell is organizing for the summer is not expected to produce a peace agreement for the Middle East, it "will be a very helpful way to explore ideas to create peace" and to bring together people who have ideas on how peace can be achieved. Asked if the president believes the Palestinian Authority is plagued by corruption, Fleischer said, "As part of the president's vision of Israel and Palestine living side by side, two states living in security and peace, a major part of that is a commitment by the Palestinian people to have a state that is governed by the rule of law, by democracy, by transparency, by the lack of corruption. "The president does have concerns about the Palestinian Authority, and making certain that the Palestinian people have a government that is worthy of them."

White House to push fast track, faith-based initiatives
WASHINGTON (CNN) The White House will step up pressure to win passage of fast-track trading authority and the president's faith-based initiative proposal after a pledge this week from House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Illinois, to move those items to the House floor within a month. Hastert promised the action during a White House meeting late Wednesday. The session was wedged between two higher profile White House meetings, Tuesday with Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, and Thursday with newly minted Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-South Dakota. According to White House and congressional sources, Hastert and Bush focused intently on the trade issue and the president urged swift passage. Hastert vowed to bring fast-track trade authority which would allow a president to negotiate trade deals and submit them to Congress with no possibility of amendment to the House floor in the first week of July. A proposal for faith-based initiative tax deductions will come to the floor earlier, during the week of June 24, Hastert told the president.
