On Friday, the White House announced that Spanish will become the official alternate language of the United States of America. Executive order 2417 requires federal agencies to produce all public documents in both English and Spanish by 2005, and directs federal employees to undergo mandatory Spanish language training This bold initiative builds on the success of the pilot program in the Texas town of El Cenizo where Spanish has been the official language since August of 2000. Mexican President Vicente Fox hails this decision as, "The first step towards President Bush's proposed American Free Trade zone." The President encourages all citizens to learn Spanish. Lessons are available for free online: We'd like to hear your comments and suggestions for improving this program. The White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, was originally constructed 1792-1800, the work of James Hoban. It was reconstructed in 1815 after being burned by British soldiers during the War of 1812. It has been the home of every president of the United States since John Adams. The exterior of the main structure, despite some additions and minor changes, remains much as it was in 1800. The interior has been completely renovated using the historic floor plan. It is significant for its Federal architecture, as a symbol of the presidency, and for the important decisions made within its walls over the years. Home Accessibility Facts For Kids ... FirstGov

Stuart Rothenberg: The White House shuffles the deck again at the RNC
By Stuart Rothenberg WASHINGTON (CNN) In a move that was both under-reported and, apparently, under-appreciated, former Montana Governor Marc Racicot, who has been selected by President George W. Bush to become the new chairman of the Republican National Committee, has not retained four senior staffers with strong ties to outgoing RNC chairman Jim Gilmore. "It's a purge," says one Republican insider who has been watching Republican National Committee politics for years. Political Director Bryan Slater, Member Relations Director Mary Shea, Director of Government Relations Mike McSherry and Communications Director Mark Miner were all let go by Racicot just prior to his announcement of a new RNC transition team. Racicot, will be formally selected as party chairman at the committee's winter meeting in January. Slater was Gilmore's campaign manager in his 1997 Virginia race for governor, and he served in the governor's administration in Richmond. McSherry, who worked at the Republican Governors Association when Gilmore chaired the organization, also worked in Gilmore's campaign and in state government. Miner was press secretary in Gilmore's gubernatorial campaign.

Notables newly identified as Pioneers include Irl Englehardt, CEO of coal giant Peabody Energy; George David, CEO of defense contractor United Technologies; and Cesar V. Conda, a former assistant for domestic policy to Vice President Dick Cheney. Three previously identified Pioneers from 2004 have been elevated to Ranger status. New Report: Special Interest Takeover The Center for American Progress and OMB Watch have released a comprehensive report prepared on behalf of the Citizens for Sensible Safeguards Coalition (of which Public Citizen is a member) that details the Bush administration's record of dismantling protections for public health, food safety, the environment and corporate responsibility. "Special interests have taken over our government from top to bottom, turning back years of progress on health, safety and the environment," the report concludes. "That this puts the public and our natural resources at significant risk seems to be of little concern to the Bush administration. Rather, the administration appears to view government as an instrument to enrich its political allies."
