Secretary Birds In the world of birds, there is a group most famous for their superior hunting skills. We call them birds of prey or raptors. For a bird to be categorized as such, it must have excellent eyesight, muscular legs, sharp claws, and hooked beaks. Can you think of a bird of prey? Sure, the national bird of the United States - the bald eagle - is one excellent example! Other familiar birds of prey include hawks, vultures, and falcons.
Among these fierce predators, secretary birds are the only birds of prey that have a pair of crane-like long legs. We can find secretary birds throughout African savannahs. Standing up to more than 3 feet tall, secretary birds are most recognizable by their long, black head crests or feathers. In fact, these feathers are possibly how secretary birds got their name - back in the 19th century, British law secretaries often carried their quill pens in their wigs. The resemblance of the bird's head crests to a secretary's quill pens is one popular theory of why we called the animal the secretary bird.

Audubon Center for Birds of Prey
1101 Audubon Way
Maitland, FL 32751
Hours: 10-4 Tuesday- Sunday Audubon Center for Birds of Prey is an urban environmental nature center that specializes in the rescue, medical care, rehabilitation and release of sick, injured and orphaned raptors (birds of prey). More than 40 percent of over 700 annual patients are returned to the wild. Some 20 different species of raptors, which cannot be returned to the wild due to injuries, are used in our conservation education programs. Audubon Center for Birds of Prey is a non-profit organization and relies on visitor admissions, donations and adoptions to support its work. Through action-based education about the environment, citizens will be empowered to preserve what remains of natural Florida as well as saving the birds themselves, which has been Audubon's focus since its beginning in the 1900's.
Over twenty years ago, the arrival of an injured Red-tailed Hawk at the Audubon Society state headquarters, then in Maitland, marked the beginning of an ambitious effort to preserve birds of prey that has changed Florida's skies forever!

include hawks, falcons, owls, vultures and condors. Hawks in the U.S.A. include the Red-Tailed Hawk, Sharp Shinned Hawk, Harris' Hawk and Cooper's Hawk. Owls include the Barn Owl, Great Horned Owl, Snowy Owl, Barred Owl and the tiny Screech Owl. The Peregrine Falcon and the American Kestrel both belong to the falcon family and range throughout the U.S.A. The U.S.A.'s vultures (also called buzzards by some folks) include the Black Vulture and Turkey Vulture. The California Condor is North America's only condor species, and is very endangered.

The California Condor reproduces slowly. It usually only breeds every other year. Because of this, combined with loss of foraging habitat, illegal shootings, DDT and incidental poisonings, the California Condor nearly became extinct. In the mid to late 1980s, the remaining Condors were brought into captivity and placed in breeding programs at the San Diego Wild Animal Park and Los Angeles Zoo. This effort has saved the Condor from the brink of extinction. Recently, young captive hatched Condors have been released not only in southern California, but at the Grand Canyon as well. The California Condor's South American relative is the Andean Condor. Other related species that can be found around the world are: Turkey Vulture, Yellow-Headed Vulture, King Vulture and Black Vulture.

Grouped together with owls (order Strigiformes), they are known as birds of prey, with owls being the nocturnal birds of prey and Falconiformes being the diurnal birds of prey. Order Falconiformes is composed strictly of carnivores, and as such their bodies are designed strictly for killing. They have powerful, curved talons with an opposable hind toe – ideal for snatching prey from the ground, water, or air. The beak is often curved and ideal for tearing flesh. The eyesight is keen, perhaps being the best in the animal kingdom. Most day raptors, as Falconiformes are sometimes called, locate their prey from the sky and dive down in amazing displays of ariel agility to capture it. However, the secretary bird is unique in that it hunts its prey, mainly snakes, on land, stalking them through the grasslands. Not all Falconiformes prey on live animals: vultures are the scavengers of the skies, feeding on the dead and diseased. As such, their bodies are designed for this type of lifestyle, with the head being bald so that entrails can slide off instead of getting caught in the feathers.

The plans for next year are still "up in the air" so watch this space for further news. WHAT IS THE NATIONAL BIRDS OF PREY CENTRE? We are one of the oldest, probably the largest and certainly the best known and respected specialist collection of birds of prey in the world. Housing approximately 250 birds of over 85 species, the Centre leads the world in the number of species bred in captivity. To date 60 species have been bred here, with new species laying eggs each year. MISSION STATEMENT
The National Birds of Prey Centre achieves its conservation of birds of prey
through Education, Captive Breeding, Research and Rehabilitation. MIGRATION DELAYED ........................ The planned migration of birds from The National Birds of Prey Centre at Newent in Gloucestershire to South Carolina in the US has been delayed. Following advice from four internationally known veterinarians it has been decided to delay moving the birds from Newent to Charleston SC, because of a mosquito-borne disease called West Nile Virus that is infecting birds in the US. A vaccine is being developed specifically for birds of prey, but is not yet available.

I've been interested in raptors and other birds of prey for about eighteen years. I've conducted hawk watches in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas for the Hawk Migration Association of North America (HMANA); was the Western editor of Hawk Migration Studies , HMANA's journal, for ten years; and was on its Board of Directors for a term. I'm most familiar with the migrations of Broad-winged Hawks, Mississippi Kites, and Red-tailed Hawks over the central and western U.S. Gulf Coast. The most exciting experience I've had was at Hazel Bazemore County Park in Corpus Christi, Texas, where tens of thousands of Broad-winged Hawks are visible in late September. LARGE PYRENEAN BIRDS OF PREY GRIFFON VULTURE Gyps fulvus
Size:
one metre from beak to tail, with a wingspan of 242 to 280 cm. Weight:
6 to 8 kg. Distinctive features:
the griffon vulture is easily recognised by its slow soaring flight, its tail -which is proportionally shorter than the width of its wing- and especially its white collar (dark brown when young) around the base of its neck. Reproduction:
nests are hidden in rocky, bushy escarpments between 350 and 1,200 m high. A single egg is laid in late January. It is incubated for 52 days on average. The young vultures fly after 115 to 155 days, and desert the nest from which they hatched one to four months later. Food:
the griffon vulture is the dustman of the mountains, clearing them of rotting sheep or cattle carcasses.
To feed its young, an adult carries up to 2.5 kg of food in its crop. Once back at its eyrie, the food is regurgitated.
Habitat:
rocky cliffs where it can construct its nest using twigs and grass. In the Pyrenees:

    Black Vulture - Coragyps atratus
    Range
The Black Vulture is most frequently seen in the warmer parts of the western hemisphere from roughly Washington DC to central Patagonia. It is not normally found in higher mountains or more desolate deserts and steppe areas.
It is probably the most most numerous bird of prey in the Western hemisphere, occupying a niche similar to that of the black kite in the Old World - scavenging from rubbish tips and the like and occurring in very large numbers around towns and cities in tropical and sub-tropical America, wherever garbage or offal is available (especially around slaughter-houses and the like)
    Diet
Their main food is carrion, but they also kill some young or defenceless wild or domestic animals.
They spend much time in the area of refuse tips and slaughter-houses, or anywhere meat in any form (fresh or putrid)is available.
They also eat eggs and, if pressed, ripe and rotten fruit and vegetables, including oil palm nuts.

An introduction to Birds of Prey
Raptors are one of the most successful and widely distributed bird groups in the world. Raptors are found on every continent (except Antarctica) and in virtually every habitat type on the planet.
There are currently two main groups or orders: Falconiformes (diurnal or daytime raptors) and Strigiformes (owls). Their variety is stunning, with more than 300 species of diurnal raptors and more than 200 species of owls.
Before going into the various groups, what is a 'raptor'? What does it mean? The word raptor comes from a Latin word, raptare , meaning to seize or plunder. It is a general term used to cover all birds of prey. Given the highly predatory nature of many birds in this group, it is a very appropriate word to use. There are four main orders
    1) New World Vultures ( Catharditae in the order Ciconiiformes
2a) Hawks and relations ( Accipitridae in the order Accipitriformes
2b) Ospreys ( Panionidae, also in the order Accipitriformes

    Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus
Size : 38-50 cm Wingspan : 83-116 cm The Peregrine Falcon is the world’s fastest flyer. Feeding primarily on other birds, it dives onto its flying prey at a speed attaining over 180 km per hour. During its nesting season, the Peregrine Falcon inhabits cliff ledges exclusively, which Dieppe cliffs provide here on Mont Saint-Hilaire. In late July, watch for aerial food exchanges as the parent birds bring in prey for their young fledglings. As the Peregrine Falcon is extremely sensitive to human presence, in particular from any approach above its nesting site, please keep your distance.

    Turkey Vulture Cathartes aura
Size : 67-81 cm Wingspan : 172-183 cm Recognizable by its two-meter wingspan and featherless red head, the Turkey Vulture can usually be seen riding the updrafts above the Dieppe and Pain de Sucre summits. Turkey Vultures are scavengers, feeding upon dead animals they find on roadsides and in open areas during their daily flights.
    R ed-tailed Hawk Buteo jamaicensis
    Size : 56 cm
Wingspan : 167 cm Characterized by its rufous-colored tail and large size, the Red-tailed Hawk is commonly seen soaring over pastures and open woodlands hunting for rodents, its primary prey. Its nest is a large structure of branches usually situated near the top of a tree. If you see this hawk near the Dieppe cliffs, you may be treated to some aerial action, as the Peregrines will vigorously chase it from the cliff area.
