About Us
WorldTeach is a non-profit, non-governmental organization based at the Center for International Development at Harvard University which provides opportunities for individuals to make a meaningful contribution to international education by living and working as volunteer teachers in developing countries.
WorldTeach was founded by a group of Harvard students in 1986, in response to the need for educational assistance in developing countries. It also addressed a growing interest among people in the U.S. and elsewhere to serve, teach and learn as volunteers overseas. Since its inception, WorldTeach has placed thousands of volunteer educators in communities throughout Asia, Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe.
WorldTeach volunteers teach in a variety of settings. Most volunteers teach English, though teaching placements have also expanded into other fields such as Information and Communication Technology and environmental education. Now in its 17th year, WorldTeach has established a proud history of contributing to international education and development and promoting cultural exchange through quality volunteer programs.

Most only knew a few phrases in English or none at all. By the time I left they were all babbling, singing and arguing in English, eager to show off their English! - Kate d’Armada, Teaching Programme, South Africa Our TEFL (Teaching English as a foreign language) placements give you work experience in a structured educational setting – a primary or secondary school, a special school, a university or in adult education.
Russian English class Most placements involve timetabled conversational English lessons. Occasionally, usually at a primary school, you may be given your own class. Depending on the country you choose for your placement, you can find yourself teaching a group of five-year-olds or a class of adults. You might even be in a special school for the deaf. In Thailand, you can even work in a boarding school for children with mental health problems. The type of teaching varies even within the same country, but generally works out at about 18 hours a week. I was one of the first English teachers into the school, and it was really encouraging to see how quickly the children’s English improved. They knew very little when we first got there. Speaking English is a real asset in China, and it was rewarding to see so many taking an interest.

Many volunteer positions do "pay", at least room and board, and it may be possible to defer educational loans during the volunteer assignment. Educational Projects in Papua New Guinea
Over the past two years, the government of PNG has implemented reforms to the education system to expand education opportunities throughout the country. At the secondary school level, there is an effort to increase the number of students who have access to an 11th and 12th Grade education from 7 percent to 30 percent. This goal has added a significant burden to a system already lacking in qualified teachers, materials, and up to date curricula. While the Department of Education has localized most positions at the primary level, staff shortages remain an acute problem in the secondary level. Volunteers in the Education Project play a critical role in helping the government carry out its educational reforms by providing secondary school teachers where there are severe shortages. Volunteers teach math, science, English, and computer skills to well over 5,000 students, placing special emphasis on opportunities to contribute to the education of girls. In addition, Volunteers design and implement formal and informal training and share teaching content, methodologies, and computer skills with over 200 Papua New Guinea teachers a year. A special education teacher training sub-project increases the number of primary school teachers trained in special education, and promotes community outreach to disabled youth and adults. One Volunteer has designed and organized a computer network system for forty computers recently donated to her school, and has also trained the faculty in running and servicing the equipment. As a result, the school now uses the computer system to complete grading, develop schedules, and perform other time-saving administrative functions.
