Student Travel and Volunteer Work Abroad - through Teaching Internships
Global Routes offers international teaching positions for college students who wish to volunteer in the following locations: Costa Rica Ghana St. Lucia Ecuador ... Thailand For students aged 17 and older
Have you ever wanted to teach English in Africa? Perhaps math or science is your specialty. Most prospective interns come to Global Routes expecting to find themselves teaching english overseas, but teachers are needed in almost all subject areas. Throughout the world thousands of children lack the basic necessities of education: books, pencils, desks and teachers. Through Global Routes, college students interested in volunteer work abroad are assigned in pairs to remote villages where they teach in local schools and take on the responsibility of completing at least one community service project. All interns in our student work abroad program are placed in schools within a 10 mile radius of one another, so no student travels more than 10 miles to reach the other. If you’ve ever wanted to teach english in Costa Rica, Ecuador, Kenya, Thailand, St. Lucia, or Ghana – among many other subjects – we invite you to investigate our student work abroad program. You may teach abroad in summer, or take time off from your studies during the fall or spring semester for your teaching internship.

People come to volunteer with us for different reasons. We have a fairly "open" agenda so we can accommodate to many different ambitions. But our volunteers have kept the common denominators of curiousness of and respect for Thai people and culture, delivering ambitious and good work and having fun in the meanwhile. A great Thai tradition!

Email: Emma Redshaw , Feb 04 I arrived in Nongkhai in the pouring rain in early February 2004 wondering why I had left the warmth of Australia (where I had been traveling before) behind me and come to a country which was cold and wet and I didn't understand the language. But very soon, actually by the end of breakfast in the Danish bakery (a cultural experience in itself with all the old farang guys and their pretty young Thai girlfriends!) the other volunteers had made me feel at home.

Feature Program: New Zealand
Join a small team of volunteers working to preserve, monitor, and re-establish the natural environment in the Wellington region. New Zealand's capital city, Wellington, is perched on the shores of a deep natural harbour surrounded by wooded hills. The Wellington region encompasses diverse landforms, indigenous plants and wildlife, and an extensive and varied coastline. Wellington is a centre for threatened species management and has a number of captive breeding facilities working with some of our most rare bird, reptile, and insect species.
Volunteers will form an integral part of our wildlife monitoring and research projects. Our program area extends throughout New Zealand’s North Island. Your time on the New Zealand Nature Program will be spent replanting native bush on several harbour islands, removing invasive pest plants, participating in bird and seal surveys, taking part in predator control, monitoring dolphins in Wellington harbour, exploring coastal inlets on sea kayaks, and helping in dune restoration.
Prepare yourself to encounter the challenges of environmental restoration in our native forests, along our wild coastline, and on our coastal islands.

Volunteer in China
Chinese School Children
The Global Volunteer Network currently has teaching English opportunities available through our partner organization in China. This will give you a chance to make an important contribution to the people of China and while doing so gain an in depth experience of the country and its culture, that will stay with you the rest of your life. This particular program is unique to alternative programs that we offer. Education is regarded extremely important so children are sent from the local villages into the cities to be schooled. The schools are well resourced and volunteers are sought in order to help with conversational English. It is the wish of the Chinese nation to become bilingual.

What to consider when starting a volunteering program What kind of program would you like to have, formal or informal?
When starting out, decide how big your program is going to be: Do you want to be the volunteer coordinator in your school and develop a structured, official program or do you want to simply be the teacher that helps kids get started on their own?
Another possibility is to create a formal program for your own class that involves a certain number of hours of community service related to an issue they are studying. For example, perhaps your students feel strongly about child labor and would like to do a one-time community service project about it.

What can I do to help the homeless
  • Don't give cash hand-outs to a homeless person, unless so moved to do so! By doing so, you risk the chance of aiding a possible alcoholic or drug addict in getting there next fix, although you will still receive your spiritual blessing from the man up above. Instead, purchase food for that person yourself. If you want to to learn more about homelessness and its relationship to alcohol and drug abuse in the United States visit Join Together After you feed that homeless person, refer them to social services, or another charity that provides food, shelter, and/or assistance. If you're already affilliated with a charitable or non-profit organization, and you have them to give, leave that person with a food voucher, and reassure them that you will pray for there deliverance from homelessness and any addictions or character defects that bind them. Donate clothes, especially cold weather ones, to your local donations charity and always keep an item in your vehicle, ready to drop off in any Salvation Army drop box that you may see while enroute to your destination. Remember, homelessness, has many faces so include diapers and other enfant necessities in your list of donated items, for the children of single and battered women. Also, donating an unused toy or two won't be missed and could brighten up some homeless child's Christmas or Birthday.

These sessions run September to December (fall session), January to April (winter session), and May to August (summer session). Because most of our volunteers are University students, our schedule is co-ordinated with that of the University. Each session lasts 13 weeks. The first week is used for student registration and for our orientation for new volunteers. The remaining 12 weeks are used for the classes. We operate on Saturdays. The 13-week session is scheduled to finish well before the University's final exam period. For example, the fall session will typically end on the last Saturday in November. When U.S. Army veteran John Reiss Jr. got a request to make a presentation to retired military officers in Yuma, Ariz., he had no idea it would blossom into a two-day, multi-subject event for potentially hundreds of people. The request came to Reiss because he is a Solar System Ambassador, one of a nationwide network of more than 200 volunteers coordinated by JPL. The ambassadors lead public programs about space exploration. On Oct. 17 and 18, Reiss, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and a colleague, Jim Ashley, will be making six presentations at various locations in the Yuma area, including Arizona Western College, the Yuma Marine Corps Air Station and the Army's Yuma Proving Ground. Commanding Officer Col. Mark E. Condra will introduce Reiss at the Yuma Marine Corps Air Station. Reiss will discuss Cassini mission.

Mars Odyssey, which will arrive at Mars on Oct. 24 Universal time (Oct. 23 Pacific time), will take measurements of the red planet's atmosphere and collect images to help scientists better understand its composition. Cassini-Huygens is on its way to Saturn and Saturn's largest moon, Titan. Ashley will present information about asteroids and comets that orbit near Earth. He will also give tips for viewing next month's Leonid meteor shower. Ashley is associate director of Minor Planet Research, Inc., an Arizona-based, nonprofit organization dedicated to discovering near-Earth asteroids and comets.

    Japanese Language Volunteers
Japanese language volunteers support people living in Japan who need to learn the Japanese language in order to live in Japan. At the Japanese classes, volunteers teach not only Japanese but also about living in Japan and about Japanese customs. Occasionally , they also counsel people concerning problems about life in Japan.) Japanese volunteer language classes have many different courses depending on the needs of the students and the abilities of the group members.Teachers not only teach about language and culture, but also learn about many different cultures. Japanese volunteer groups offer private lessons, small group lessons and large group lessons. Groups also hold other activities, such as international friendship parties, workshops, and teaching about traditional Japanese crafts and hobbies. Japanese volunteer language groups are not only about language teaching, but about building international grass roots networks.
    Tokyo Nihongo Volunteer Network
Recently, the number of foreigners has increased year by year in Japan. Because of this, Japanese volunteer language groups have also increased.

Mom manages to write, teach, volunteer, even bird-watch By ASA BUSHNELL The Courier It’s probably true that Marjorie White Pellegrino is not a household name among most adults in our community, but her skills touch the lives of so many youngsters in so many memorable ways that almost everyone in the next generation soon will know who she is. In the heroic tradition of "The Scarlet Pimpernel," she’s here, she’s there, she’s everywhere, helping others with tireless enthusiasm. "I showed my schedule for the coming month to a friend," says Pellegrino, "and she remarked, ‘That’s pathetic.’" Well, "pathetic" obviously isn’t the word Marge Pellegrino would use – she prefers "exciting," "rewarding" or "fun" – though she readily admits her nonstop volunteerism for little monetary gain could be viewed as pitiful. A favorite cause is the Tucson Writers’ Project, which she describes as a "jewel in the crown" of the Tucson-Pima Public Library system. As a part of an APPLECORP grant, obtained for TWP through the "genius" of Ann Dernier, the library’s poet-in-residence, Pellegrino this year is involved with the Center for Prevention and Resolution of Violence at the Southside Presbyterian Church and PAL (Play and Learn) after-school program at Keeling Elementary in the Amphitheater School District. "Both programs empower students through writing and community-building activities," she enthuses.
