Studio Classroom and World Vision "Open a Window to the World for Kids" in Taiwan with Teacher Training Program Studio Classroom and World Vision's collaboration to bring English to the disadvantaged throughout Taiwan took life May 1-2, 2004, with its English Teacher Training Program, held in Taipei at the Chien-Tan International Youth Activity Center. "Open a Window to the World for Kids" provides English-learning opportunities to underprivileged youth. Recruiting volunteer teachers went much better than anticipated. The hope was to find 90-120 volunteers, but over 350 people volunteered. In the end, 183 volunteers were chosen. The volunteers have varying backgrounds, ranging from university students majoring in English to both current and retired teachers. Volunteers came from all over Taiwan to participate in the training. Studio Classroom's Liz Archer led the program, assisted by her husband, Phil, and Let's Talk in English co-hosts Campbell Chang and Andrea Brodersen. The instruction included two days of lectures and real-live teaching demonstrations. The response from the teachers-in-training was overwhelming, including comments such as, "This is the best training I have ever seen." These volunteer teachers desire to contribute their time to teach and love these children, affording them opportunities that they may never otherwise get. The volunteers are assigned to 47 different locations throughout Taiwan.

Program helps teach teachers Cambridge resident started Project Teach three years ago. By Jim Purnell The Cambridge Reporter While observing classes at Hespeler Public School, a Haitian teacher now realizes that using a soft voice is just as effective as using a harsh voice when disciplining students. She was surprised to see students responding to calm requests instead of the threatening voice used by many teachers in her Carribean homeland. The lessons learned during Violene Henri-Joseph's four days at Hespeler Public School in June reaffirmed those learned during Project Teach, a two-weeek program run by a Cambridge teacher last year in Haiti. The lessons taught in Project Teach's seminars were the first formal lessons for Henri-Joseph. There are only a few small, private teacher's training facilities in Haiti where two-thirds of Haitian teachers have only received a grade six education. Henri-Joseph was invited to Hespeler Public School by teacher Doreen Roussy who taught her during ProjectTeach. Since graduating from the program, Henri-Joseph, a teacher and principal of a day care, said she has received many more flowers of gratitude from her students. She was one of 250 teachers who learned more effective classroom techniques than strapping students, which is still allowed in Haiti. She said teachers no longer get students to stand in the corner on one foot in her school for misbehaviour. Instead they use such management skills as loss of recess. Cambridge resident Pierre Joanis started Project Teach in 1997 because he and his wife Susan were appalled by the conditions in Haitian shools while working in Haiti from 1994 until 1996. In June, 1998 only eight percent of high school students passed their final exams. The couple were working for the American Department of Justice helping the restoration of President Aristide's civilian government after he was overthrown by a military coup in 1991.

Programmes: Home Volunteer Feedback Latest News You can do this in Keep up to Date Join our mailing list When I arrived, the children were reluctant to speak, even in their own language. Most only knew a few phrases in English or none at all. By the time I left they were all babbling, singing and arguing in English, eager to show off their English! - Kate d’Armada, Teaching Programme, South Africa Our TEFL (Teaching English as a foreign language) placements give you work experience in a structured educational setting – a primary or secondary school, a special school, a university or in adult education.
Russian English class Most placements involve timetabled conversational English lessons. Occasionally, usually at a primary school, you may be given your own class. Depending on the country you choose for your placement, you can find yourself teaching a group of five-year-olds or a class of adults. You might even be in a special school for the deaf. In Thailand, you can even work in a boarding school for children with mental health problems. The type of teaching varies even within the same country, but generally works out at about 18 hours a week. I was one of the first English teachers into the school, and it was really encouraging to see how quickly the children’s English improved. They knew very little when we first got there. Speaking English is a real asset in China, and it was rewarding to see so many taking an interest.

Volunteer Teacher Program The Mirror Art Group assumes a wide range of responsibilities within the Mae Yao community. The Mirror Art Group enlists the help of the volunteer teachers to accomplish these projects. These are committed, dynamic individuals of all ages and backgrounds who choose to devote their time, skills and energy to the work of the Group. Most of the volunteers are technologically savvy and obtain information about the program through this webpage.
Thus far over 2,000 volunteers have already come to Chiang Rai to work on the Mirror Art Group's various projects in the area. A typical placement will last for 4 or 5 days, in groups of up to 50 people. The volunteers live with villagers for the duration, trying to fit in to the tribal culture as much as possible. Projects involve teaching Thai (the second language of the hilltribes) and English, helping the farmers in the fields, and entertaining the children with games and songs.
The rewards are numerous for both the volunteers and the children. Volunteers have a rare opportunity to learn about and form bonds within a minority culture that is misunderstood by the majority of lowland Thais and unknown to most of the world. They also realize new skills as they meet the challenges of a much more strenuous life and gain satisfaction from their interactions with the children. The hilltribe children living in remote villages gain an opportunity to practice languge with native speakers, derive pride in their culture from the genuine interest of the volunteers can use the volunteer teachers as positive role models during their inevitable integration into Thai culture.

Arlington Education and Employment Program (Arlington, Virginia, USA) Picture this: You've just received word from your volunteer coordinator that a brand new, eager volunteer will be starting with your class next Monday. What are you going to do? Volunteers can be a tremendous asset in the ESL classroom. They can help you give extra attention to all of the students while the class is engaged in practice activities, or they can give extra help to small groups or individuals in the class. However, as you begin to use volunteers in your classroom, you will need to put a little extra time into planning how you'd like to put them to use, and you will need to designate time either before or during class (sometimes volunteers have to arrive late because of their work schedules) for clarifying your plans with the volunteer. The time it takes to do the extra planning is well worth it, though; it also decreases as you get used to it and build up your supply of strategies for using volunteers. And as your volunteer becomes more acquainted with your students' needs and your teaching style, he or she usually requires less explanation of activities. In general, the gains to your students and yourself far outweigh the bit of extra effort initially needed in using volunteers. Here are some tried and true ideas for using volunteers in your class. They have been collected from teachers who have used volunteers successfully for many years. They are listed in order from basic to more elaborate.
