http://www.travel-to-teach.org/
What is Travel-to-Teach?
Travel to Teach is a non-profit organisation, which provides affordable volunteering opportunities to teach English whilst travelling abroad.
Travel to Teach's mission is to:
Provide valuable working opportunities for our volunteers.
Ensure genuine travelling experiences of different cultures at a cost that most travelers can afford.
Teach English and Computer skills to the poorer parts of the world where too little education is provided.
Travel to Teach prioritises but does not work exclusively with women and young people on the recipient side. It is generally accepted that aid given to women is more likely to sustain local communities. Moreover, women in most developing countries are in a very vulnerable position that can be strengthened by training. How is Travel to Teach funded?
Travel to Teach has no external funding; our participating volunteers pay for their stay and help support the programs we run with their fees. We are religiously, politically and in every other aspect completely independent.
Travel to Teach offers is something between tourism, backpacking and volunteer-work. The benefits from volunteering with Travel to Teach are:

MENU: HOME Reconstruction Recovery Renewal ... Language Main Page VOLUNTEER TEACHERS The World Language Process presently has requests for hundreds of teachers to teach English. Many of these requests are from Governors of Provinces in Thailand, but there are many requests from other places in the world including from the State of Florida for teaching English to Spanish speaking prisoners. Unfortunately, while the positions just mentioned provide room and board for the volunteers and have no cost to the volunteers, except transportation, they do require the availability of the World Language Process ACCESS System which, because of economies of scale, we cannot implement until we have requests for thousands of teachers. While in the past we maintained a registry of teacher volunteers we discontinued doing so because we found that obtaining volunteers was not going to be a problem since there are many university students and retired people willing to volunteer. The problem is that we need requests for THOUSANDS of teachers so that we can implement the ACCESS System. For this, our present hope is that the Government of China will want to use many thousands of volunteers to teach English for the upcoming Olympics in China.

Volunteer Teachers in Ciudad Romero Dixie and Vicki, two teachers from Washington state, returned as volunteers to teach in Ciudad Romero after participating in the 1999 Zone of Peace Tour . This is their experience, in their own words.
Local teachers learning to use computers in Ciudad Romero. Teaching in the Bajo Lempa Last summer, after visiting the school in Cuidad Romero, we were inspired to return. We knew we wanted to teach in some capacity, but it took a chain of Emails to figure out what was most needed. The teachers learned computer basics in the morning and we taught English to students in the afternoon. We felt the computer training was very successful and feel confident that the learning will continue with the help from several leaders in the Coordinadora. It is impossible for anyone to learn a language in 5 days, but we were able to leave them with materials to continue. We enjoyed working with both students and staff. Most students were shy, but enthusiastic learners ranging in age from 12-18 years old. These students were placed in grades 7, 8, and 9 based on their ability not their age, so what we think of as a typical 7th grade class was definitely different.

Prison Education Coordinator Adam Mcintyre addresses a class of inmates.
An image of Northward Prison that does not usually spring to mind was the focus there on Monday, 5 March. Upwards of 20 prisoners were seated in a classroom, heads down, hard at work on their studies. And this is a regular occurrence. Three days weekly, including public holidays, a small band of dedicated volunteer teachers can be found at Northward, teaching a group of enthusiastic inmates critical skills they will carry with them at their release. The Prison Director, his education staff and this small team of volunteers are committed to helping these inmates improve their education. Northward Prison provides a range of classes not only in basic literacy and numeracy, but also in assertiveness training, parenting craft, anger management, life skills, human relations, and art. Mathematics and English are also offered at GCE O'Level. Many inmates have grasped this opportunity and are active students in the programme, gleaning valuable knowledge and skills that they will need to become productive citizens in the future.

Date: Sat, 10 Jan 2004, at 12:14 p.m. Free this summer? Hainan Island, China beckons you
A joint US – Canada volunteer ESL initiative Recruitment now underway for about 8 volunteer teachers to participate in a 4 week English as a Second Language summer school at the Hainan Foreign Languages Normal School, located in Wenchang, Hainan Island, China. Qualifications Required
  • Native-English speaker (ideally, but not necessarily)
  • Available 1st week of July to 1st week of August If useful to anyone still attending school, Chinese officials are prepared to offer “credit” for time served. Unfortunately, volunteers are responsible for the cost of their flight to Hainan, but once there, accommodation and food is provided by the school. As well, a trip along the east coast of Hainan Island to the most southerly Chinese city of Sanya is provided. The Wenchang Summer School Story Canadian organizer Arn Brown happened to be working on the campus of the Hainan Foreign Languages Normal School, located in Wenchang, Hainan, in 2001, when a volunteer American organization converged on the campus to run a 4 week English as a Second Language summer school, a first experience for the students. Unfortunately, that group couldn’t make it for 2002. Arn stepped in to recruit a Canadian contingent to fill the void. It would have been a go for 2003, had it not been for SARS. However, for all intents and purposes the summer school is a go for 2004. Ideally, Arn hopes to cement a joint US-Canadian initiative, so that a contingent of Americans and Canadians can be expected yearly.

    http://www.rn.ac.th/english/volunteer.html
Volunteer Teachers Simone Ashby London, U.K. 13 December 2001 - 1 March 2002 Programme : Teaching and Projects Abroad Impression : Both students and teachers were very friendly and helpful and generous at all times and I felt welcomed from the first day. I have had a wonderful experience here. I did find that some students were too shy to approach us and in lessons they were afraid to ask questions or tell me if they did not understand me. Suggestions :
Make sure volunteers know in advance what they are expected to teach. For example, it was unclear for me whether I should teach on my own and therefore plan each lesson, or whether I was just helping a teacher in her lessons, therefore teaching from a text book.
Make sure volunteers have at least 2 lessons a day and that they are made aware of public holidays and lesson cancellations in advance. Georgina Bonner London, U.K.
