History/Purpose: A NGO that works with street children age This project is on helping infants and teenagers who live on the streets, drug addicts, homosexuals, etc.
The goal of this institution is to recuperate the value of citizenship of these children. To achieve this goal, they get the children out of the streets, feed them, give them a place to stay, teach them a job, give them information on hygiene, civil rights, etc., so they can be returned to the society better formed.
Placement: Teaching English, hygiene, civil rights, counseling and assisting with school work.

Adult Basic Education Program (ABE)
Co-Teacher
Help adult learners achieve their educational goals by serving as a co-teacher in one of our basic education courses: math, reading/writing, or English for Speakers of other languages (ESOL). Volunteers are paired with one of our staff instructors to co-teach classes. Day and evening times available. (Bellingham, Mount Vernon, Seattle)
  • Math
    Math classes focus on acquiring GED competencies. Topics include place value; use of whole number operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; fractions; decimals; percentages; ratios; graphs; measurements; and solving word problems.
    ESOL
    ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes are geared toward meeting the immediate cultural and linguistic needs of immigrants and refugees.

Professional Services Needed If you have even one hour to spare, you can make a difference in the lives of homeless individuals and families at the Clara-Mateo Alliance shelter. Do you have a skill you can share? For example, could you:
  • Prepare and/or serve a meal one evening for residents, perhaps a barbecue dinner on the grassy areas surrounding the shelter? Learn how to do it from our on-line manual Hold an informal resume-writing workshop at the shelter? Teach a resident how to use the internet to search for jobs? Give a small workshop on how to use word processing or other software? Read stories to children while their mothers run errands for an hour or two? Care for children in the shelter for a couple of hours while parents are on a job interview? Be responsible for collections of Another Way canister donations, either from a group of merchants, or from Home or Corporate Canister participants, who need their donations picked up?

Volunteer Opportunities The Montgomery County Extension 4-H Program offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for adult residents of our county. All volunteers who will work directly with youth are screened, oriented and supervised by MCE. All volunteers have job descriptions and regular training opportunities available. Volunteer roles can be short term or long term and are open to anyone regardless of age, race, gender, religion, national origin, or disability.
* Examples of long term volunteer roles:
Club organizational leaders - (Most clubs meet monthly year-round) Most clubs are community based, subject matter based, or audience based. Community clubs meet in a specific community, area, subdivision or housing complex. Subject matter clubs can include various animal clubs (dog clubs, pet clubs, horse clubs, etc), natural resource clubs (fishing club, target shooting club, recycling club, etc), family science clubs (fashion club, nutrition club, etc), mechanical science clubs (bike club, small engine club), and others (cultural exchange club, creative writing club, etc.). Audience based clubs might include a teen group, a home schooled club or a club for younsters with special needs. Site managers - Adventure in Science Clubs meet weekly from mid October to mid March at various local science facilities. Volunteers are needed to organize the weekly programs at each site, oversee the use of equipment, and guide the participants towards completion at the Parents’ Day program.

Have you ever thought about volunteering but weren't sure about what to do or how to get started? If so, the Department of Parks and Recreation has a number of opportunities for you to volunteer close to home. The success of many of our programs and events depends directly on the efforts of our volunteers! And there's a bonus: volunteering can be fun! The program also provides an excellent opportunity for middle and high school students to earn service learning hours, and for college students to obtain valuable work experience.
TEENS:
The deadline for Summer Teen Volunteer Applications was June 1, 2004. We are no longer accepting applications for summer teen volunteer positions. special events and with ongoing events . Volunteers contribute services in many capacities, from working in greenhouses and maintenance of gardens and flower plots to serving in administrative and child care positions; serving as ushers and parking lot attendants at cultural events; assisting in nature centers and historic sites; working at community events and serving on Recreation Councils and Friends Groups; cleaning streams, waterways and park lands; and volunteering at golf courses, community centers, playgrounds and other Commission facilities.
The Commission is a recognized provider of volunteer opportunities for students seeking to fulfill their service learning requirement required for graduation. Many teenagers volunteer part-time during the school year engaging in special events, festivals, special projects and year-round opportunities. In most cases, the minimum age requirement to volunteer is 13 years old. So, check out the volunteer opportunities list. There is something for everyone!
