Greece lost to Venezuela for the second night in a row, Saturday evening at Patras, and concluded its World League obligations for 2001. Greece had needed a victory by at least 3-0 sets and 75-63 points to keep alive its very slim hopes of a Final Eight berth. But the home team players seemed unmotivated for two sets and allowed Venezuela a comfortable 2-0 lead. While Greece came back to force the game into a tie-break, Venezuela eventually emerged the winner afetr a very close fifth set the fifth consecutive defeat of Greece in Pool B of the Intercontinental Round of the World League. The fundamental philosophy guiding the Paralympic movement is that athletes with disabilities should have opportunities to pursue their goals in sport equivalent to those of non-disabled athletes. Athletes who compete in the Paralympics set their sights on the dream of winning a gold medal, are committed to strenuous training regimes and meet strict qualifying standards to be selected to their national team. The Paralympic Games represent a commitment to excellence that allows elite athletes to achieve their personal best. The Paralympic Games exemplify the Olympic ideal of participation and sportsmanship.

Between 15th September and 1st October 2000, Sydney was the focus of the world's attention while the Games of the 27th Olympiad were held, with Homebush Bay, on the banks of the Parramatta River, being the main Olympic site. The Paralympic Games were also held in Sydney, between 18 and 29 October 2000. Homebush Bay is located approximately 14 kms west of the Harbour Bridge and is an outstanding complex of stadiums, parks and ultramodern athletics centres. The site had a number of industrial uses prior to its use as the Olympic site and, in accordance with Sydney's successful Olympic bid, a huge environmental project was undertaken to clean up this contaminated area.

An enormous push by national associations like the AVP and USAV, international groups like the FIVB and the Olympic committee, constantly increase the sport's attraction and marketability. This creates an effective and proven way of building greater interest among millions of active people across the country. Volleyball is on the rise. In 2003, televised volleyball events doubled and national ratings increased tremendously. Our affiliation with the AVP and its grassroots program, AVPNext, allows us to tap into this national advertising and take advantage of the increasing interest. Couple that with the summer Olympics and international coverage that they provide, outdoor volleyball will surge in 2004 and continue gaining popularity for years to come. Mountain States Marketing has been involved with volleyball for over 14 years. We have helped promote every major volleyball event in Colorado including Spike-It-Up, the Bud Light four-person tours and AVP events. In addition to producing over 300 of our own events, we also assist with other marquee events like the MotherLode Volleyball Classic and the Vail King of the Mountain tournaments.

The Federation Internationale De Volleyball (FIVB) was founded by 14 National Federations (USA, France, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Egypt, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Romania, Turkey, Brazil, Uruguay and Yugoslavia) in Paris, France. Its mandate was to organise international competition and develop standardised volleyball rules worldwide. The rules were clarified and rewritten to aid in interpretation. Blocking was defined and the service area stipulated as being the right third of the back line. Other items clarified were: each player should be in his own area before the ball leaves the server's hands; points made from wrong server were cancelled; simultaneous hits by two players constituted one hit; time out for rest was one minute; time out for injury was five minutes; time out between games was three minutes. (The first men’s World Championships were held in Prague, Czechoslovakia. The Soviet men defeated the Czech’s 3-1. After 54 years, women got their first chance to play competitive volleyball.

ASTHMA COMMON IN U.S. OLYMPIC ATHLETES
WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE 1996 OLYMPIC GAMES,
RESEARCHERS REPORT IOWA CITY, Iowa - At least one in six athletes representing the United States in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta had a history of asthma, according to a study published today in the November issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Researchers at the University of Iowa and the U.S. Olympic Committee sought to examine how many athletes in the 1996 Olympic Games had a history of asthma, had taken asthma medications or had symptoms that suggested asthma. Asthma is a lung disease characterized by tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, wheezing and cough. To examine the prevalence of asthma, John Weiler, M.D., University of Iowa professor of internal medicine, and his co-authors analyzed responses from an extensive, mandatory medical history questionnaire required of all U.S. Olympic athletes competing in the 1996 Olympic Games. The questionnaire was completed during team processing in Atlanta two weeks prior to participation in the Olympic Games and responses were reviewed with each athlete. The questionnaire, designed by the U.S. Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Division with input from Weiler and his colleagues, included specific questions regarding allergic and respiratory disorders.

The top-four teams advance to the Games with one berth guaranteed for an Asian country. Italy, 6-0, and South Korea, 4-2, have secured two of the four spots. The Canadians, the lowest-seeded team in the eight-country competition at 14th in the world, are 0-6 and have no chance of going to Sydney in September. South Korea booked its Olympic ticket despite losing 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-7) to top-seeded and world No. 4 China. Croatia and China are both 4-2 heading into Sunday's final matches. Women in the Olympics - a brief history
The 20th May 2000 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games. It also marks the centenary of women’s participation in the modern Olympics. Three events were available for women at the 1900 Olympic Games: golf, tennis and yachting. When the modern Olympic Games began in 1896 women had no part in the competition. In fact, the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin had said on several occasions that the Olympics were no place for women. He felt that rather than seek records for herself, a woman’s greatest achievement was to encourage her sons to excel. Women had to work to gain a presence in the Olympic arena and force open the door to one sport after another. Swimming for women was included in the Games in 1912 and a limited program of track and field was added in 1928. Women’s races longer than 200m were banned until 1960 when the 800m was reintroduced. The women’s marathon was not added until 1984. In 1992 the 10,000m walk was introduced and recently, waterpolo — which had been the domain of men since the Olympics first began — was added to the 2000 Olympic Games program for women. Women have played an enormous role in painting the Olympic picture. Since Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain won gold in singles tennis at the 1900 Paris Olympics, many women have put their stamp on Olympic history.

In 1995, the sport of Volleyball was 100 years old! The sport originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports. Today there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 million players worldwide who play Volleyball at least once a week. In William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head. During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport.
