Mission Statement/ History/ Philosophy Champions for Starlings Fundraiser (May 2004) Nationals 2004 News Corner ... Donations Mission Statement To provide the equal opportunity for girls from diverse, lower socioeconomic environments to train and compete at USA Volleyball's Junior Olympic level; to encourage teamwork, health, positive life skills, and academic achievement; to establish member clubs throughout the nation that are community-based and self-sustaining. Philosophy The Starlings believe in supporting the participation of girls in volleyball because: Girls who participate in sports are 92% less likely to get involved with drugs. Girls who participate in sports are 80% less likely to have an unwanted pregnancy. Girls who participate in sports are three times more likely to graduate from high school. Girls who participate in sports have a higher level of self esteem. The sport of volleyball is ideal for the inner cities and rural areas of America—inexpensive, non-contact, and inherently a social game requiring communication and cooperation. Girls playing volleyball in the United States outnumber boys, 12 to 1. It is truly the “girl’s game” of America. Starlings Volleyball Clubs excludes no girl due to financial hardship. While junior club volleyball dues around the nation are often exclusionary, Starlings club dues are dramatically minimized and some girls are provided work opportunities in exchange for monthly dues. Additionally, all Starlings clubs are required to raise part of their budget through fundraising.

http://www.southbaylife.com/volleyball.htm
Beach Volleyball T here have been many great volleyball players over the past 30 years. Most of them hail from somewhere in Southern California and a few of them are from right here in The South Bay.
Mike Dodd was born and raised in Manhattan Beach and still lives and trains here today. He is married to another volleyball pro, Patty Dodd, and they have a daughter. Mike is also a businessman and owns the restaurant, Fonzs, in Manhattan Beach.
Mike first played beach volleyball at the age of 10 and later played competitively with his brother, Ted, in amateur events. He earned his "AAA" rating at the age of 16, becoming the youngest player to achieve that level on the beach. His first career victory came at the 1981 State Beach event with his partner, Tim Hovland. His most memorable experience on the tour was his first win at the Manhattan Beach Open.
Among other professional accomplishments, Mike Dodd took home a silver medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. He was voted Best Defensive Player in 1994, 1996, has won five Manhattan Beach Opens with Hovland in 1987, 1982-1985, and has won one U.S. Championships and four World Championships with Hovland in 1989, 1985-1987, 1983 (prior to 1989, the U.S. Championships were called the World Championships).
World Class Sporting Events
Two of the biggest Beach Volleyball tournaments of the season take place here. The Manhattan Open is the oldest and most prestigious volleyball tournament in the world. Referred to often as the Wimbledon of volleyball, the tournament takes place just south of the Manhattan Beach Pier. The greatest names in volleyball have all played here and the tournament draws tens of thousands of spectators over the course of the weekend.

The Games herald a new dawn in the east
Between October 10 - 24, 5140 athletes from 93 countries became guests of the land of the rising sun. Japan, for its part was eager to prove, as the first Asian host, that it was far removed from the atrocities of the Second World War. The organizers chose a potent symbol to prove their turnaround. Yoshinori Sakai, born on the day an atomic bomb was unleashed on Hiroshima, was chosen as the final runner to carry the Olympic flame into the arena. Although chosen in 1936 for the 1940 Games, Tokyo had to forfeit the following year due to its conflict with China. On May 25, 1959 Japan was given full support to host the 18th Olympiad with 34 votes out of 56 in favor.

History Of Volleyball In 1995, the sport of Volleyball celebrated its 100th birthday! The sport originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports. Today there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 million players worldwide who play Volleyball at least once a week. In (only two years after the invention of basketball), William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass. (only minutes from the birthplace of basketball), decided to blend elements of tennis, baseball, basketball, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of "mintonette". Morgan used the bladder of a basketball to provide a lighter ball with a more lively bounce. He borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the height of an average man's head. During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport. The History of the Olympics Since the Olympic games go way back to the early Greeks, to do an entire history on one page is a bit overwhelming. So, I'll give you a brief summation of how it all began, and then provide some further links for additional information. So, how and why did it all begin? In ancient Greece, they often combined religious festivals with sporting events, to honor certain gods. The Greeks held the following: The Pythian Games
The Nemean Games
The Isthmian Games
The Olympic Games It was the last one, the Olympics, that were held for the Greek God Zeus and were also the most popular with the people. The first game is said to be held at Olympia, Greece in 776 B.C. and has been held every 4 years since = 1,168 years! Then, Greece came under the rule of the Roman Empire and the Olympic games were declined, to the point where they actually declined in 393 B.C. by the Christian Roman Emperor, Theodosius I, who objected to what he felt were some "pagan rites" associated with the games. In the beginning, the Olympic games were confined to just one day and one event. That event was a footrace that was the length of the stadium. Soon, additional races were added as the popularity grew, as well as discus and javelin throws (tosses), broad jumps, boxing, wrestling, chariot racing and a pentathlon. The pentathlon was composed of 5 different track and field competitions.

If you've ever played volleyball, you've experienced the excitement of one of the most popular games in America. Now, imagine yourself on the receiving end of a powerful spike by one of the top players in the world! This sport, one of the fastest team sports in the Olympic games, was invented in 1885 by William G. Morgan. What was the game originally called? When and where was the first game played? What games were combined to create the sport? These questions can be answered by visiting the History of Volleyball page: http://www.volleyball.org/history.html Two kinds of volleyball are played at the Olympics, Indoor Volleyball, and Beach Volleyball (a new sport at this year's Games.) Indoor Volleyball will be played from July 20 to August 4 at the University of Georgia and the Omni Colliseum, while Beach Volleyball will be played from July 23 to July 28 at the Atlanta Beach.
