The Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), the worldwide governing body for the sport of volleyball, is based in Lausanne, Switzerland and led by its president, Dr. Ruben Acosta H. The FIVB was founded in Paris in 1947 by 14 nations. Its first president, Paul Libaud, was succeeded by Dr. Acosta in 1984. In Holyoke, Massachusetts, William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical education director, created a new game called "Mintonette" as a pastime to be played preferably indoors and by any number of players. The game took some of its characteristics from tennis and handball. It was not as rough as basketball, but still required quite a bit of athletic effort. After a demonstration given at the YMCA in nearby Springfield, the name "Mintonette" was replaced with "Volleyball." The rules as modified by W.E. Day were accepted and published by the YMCA. The height of the net went up to 7 feet 6 inches. Match length was set at 21 points. Canada was the first "foreign" country to adopt volleyball.

History of the sport
In 1995, the sport of Volleyball was 100 years old!
The sport originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports.
Today there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 million players worldwide who play Volleyball at least once a week.
In 1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head. During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport. On July 7, 1896 at Springfield College the first game of "volleyball" was played.

Greece lost to Venezuela for the second night in a row, Saturday evening at Patras, and concluded its World League obligations for 2001. Greece had needed a victory by at least 3-0 sets and 75-63 points to keep alive its very slim hopes of a Final Eight berth. But the home team players seemed unmotivated for two sets and allowed Venezuela a comfortable 2-0 lead. While Greece came back to force the game into a tie-break, Venezuela eventually emerged the winner afetr a very close fifth set the fifth consecutive defeat of Greece in Pool B of the Intercontinental Round of the World League. Links P hiladelphia U niversity V olleyball C lub History Philadelphia University has taken a giant step in the last few years in regards to the sport of volleyball. Due to the vast amount of interest in the sport, a volleyball club was started by a small group of students in 1994 that was open for membership to both men and women. Funded entirely by the Student Government Association (SGA) and Intramurals, the Philadelphia University Volleyball Club began competing in the Middle Atlantic Club Volleyball Conference (M.A.C.V.C.) , a men's intercollegiate volleyball league, in the Spring of 1996. In the Fall of '96, the Athletic Department decided that it was time to form a Division II Women's Varsity team to add to their list of fall sports. Competing at a club level for one year, the Women's team would receive full varsity status in the Fall of '97 with scholarships available to deserving players. The addition of the Women's Varsity team greatly benefited the already existing Volleyball Club through the purchase of new equipment and much needed financial support from the Athletic Department. Today, both teams work together to promote the sport of volleyball at the college and all the unique experiences and opportunities it has to offer. The support for both volleyball programs from the Athletic Department and the entire Philadelphia University community has been overwhelming and will surely solidify the future success of both teams.

There's a lot of stuff here that non-members may find boring. Oh well, this section is mostly for our own use. Our recollections from the past years tend to be quite sketchy, (all our records have been filed in a very safe place). So now whenever we think of something we put it in here. This way our members, (the ol' timers that is), can look in here and think back to times gone by.
In the Beginning
Dragons Volleyball Club was started by David and Peter Kelly in 1987. They entered one mens team in Division 2 of the Brisbane Metro League.

More mystery surrounds the clubs activities in 1989.

The team tied for fifth place in the conference and lost in the first round of the conference playoffs to USP. With only two seniors, 4 freshmen and 4 sophomores, the season was a learning experience for the team. Moving to NCAA Division II full member status and playing a very strong non-conference schedule kept the team from a winning record, but the strength of the schedule will help the team next year.

A Bit of History
The IC volleyball club was initally formed in 1964 by a group of Persians (Iranians today) students. The club had teams in the London League and SEETECH League. During the late 60's we won the SEETECH a number of times, with the Finals usually at Crystal Palace. Our home court was the gym in the Union Building 2nd floor( not really suitable but the best available at the time). We trained regularly on Sunday afternoons, with matches on Wednesday in the SEETECH League and evenings in the London League. As we were the only club in London University, we accepted players from any College, and played in the BUSA championship as London University. Unfortunately, we were not that successfull in this competition, at the time. In the 1969/70 Season we won the London League, and we decided to enter into the National 2nd Division for the 1970/71 Season. It was then that we realised that we only had 5 players for the coming season, so you can imagine how important the Freshers' Day became. Fortunately a number of strong players arrived, and we had a decent team for the subsequent campaign. We finished 5th in Division 2 of the National League that season. We also entered a European Technology Colleges tournament in Holland, where we took 6 players and managed to come away with 3rd place (with one injured player throughout!). As far as we are aware of, we were the first English team to claim a place in any European tournament!!!
