Boys' Quest
June, 2000 by Matthew M. Martin
I shanked a floater into the antenna. Side out. I was repaid with an Asian jumper for a hard dig to the setter and a sweet dump. The trash went off the block but right to a sliding pancake and into a shoot only to be roofed for a six pack. Side out. Is this some sort of alien battle fought with breakfast foods and soda on a garbage site in the mountainous regions of China? No. It's slang for just another play in organized volleyball, a fast-paced team sport that is rapidly joining the ranks of serious professional sports and leaving its image of sloppy backyard play behind. Developed by William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical education teacher, volleyball began in 1895 in Holyoke, MA. For a long time, volleyball was viewed by most people as a game slightly more complicated than a game of catch. Any old ball was sent over a tattered net to be fought over by a stampeding mob. Their only objective was to push, shove, throw, or try by any other means to send the ball right back to the other side. It wasn't until 1964, almost 70 years after its founding, that volleyball became what it is today a game as athletically demanding as basketball and as strategically complex as football. New variations allow the game to be played with teams of two, four, or six players. Volleyball has become so popular it is played indoors in churches, schools, and fitness clubs. Outdoors it is played on grass, sand, and even pavement. Now, competitive volleyball is played at all levels, including professional and Olympic.

Volleyball was originally invented as a game called 'Mintonette' in 1895 by William G Morgan. He was the director of physical training at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusets. He wanted to try to introduce a non contact sport (unlike basketball). The number of players per side was fixed as 6 in 1918. It's first appearance at a multi sport event was at the 1913 Far Eastern Games in Manilla, Phillipines. The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) was formed in 1947 and the first World Championships were held on an outdoor tennis court in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1949.

Coach Captains Roster Schedule ... Haverford Home Page History Former coach Ann Koger founded the Haverford College volleyball program in 1980-81 when she pulled together the first-ever Fords volleyball squad with only one class of women to draw upon. Koger, a former star herself at Morgan State (Md.), remained the sole head coach of the volleyball team for 17 years, with one season off to finish her doctorate in education. The team soon gained respectability with Tamra Siegel '86 emerging as Haverford's first real volleyball ace.
The Fords achieved an initial playoff berth in their Middle Atlantic Conference days and now hope to repeat that feat as the Centennial Conference has added playoffs. Alisa Bieber '97 helped the team make the transition to Centennial membership. Koger stepped down as volleyball head coach after the 1996 season to focus on her other duties as an athletic administrator and women's tennis head coach at Haverford.
Under Jim Haney, Haverford improved each year by defeating several scholarship opponents and challenging many regionally and nationally ranked teams. In 1999 the Fords enjoyed their first winning season in a decade, then they exploded to a 30-6 mark in 2000 and a share of their first-ever regular season Centennial Conference title with an 8-2 record (21-12 overall) in 2001. The Fords hope to continue their rapid improvement and join the Division III elite in coming seasons.

HISTORY of PJC SPORTS
Pensacola Junior College held its first day of classes on Sept. 13, 1948 with an enrollment of 128 students. As increasing enrollment produced the demand for student activities, Lou Ross, a social science instructor, introduced PJC's first basketball team in 1949 and coached the first baseball team in 1951. Ross served as the director of athletics and also served as the regional vice president of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
By 1951, intercollegiate sports included basketball, baseball, and tennis, and PJC became a member of a newly organized junior college conference made up of Florida schools.
In 1955, the women's sports program was introduced. Although women students at PJC did not participate in athletics at the intercollegiate level, they did participate in the annual Sports Day held by Florida colleges and universities. The intramural program also began in the mid-1950s under the direction of the Physical Education Department.
By 1963, PJC's athletic program had grown to include basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, track and field, a trampoline team and a swim team. Coach Bill Clendenin lead the men's basketball team to win the 1963 state championship. Since then, PJC has had several conference, state and national championship teams.

The next two hours of volleyball proved to be one of the most improbable, impossible and simply miraculous comebacks that I have ever witnessed in all of sport. Salt Lake inched their way back in game three, cruised in game four and stole the show in game five with a 15-13 win to advance to the national championship match. Pandamonium ensued. Ironically, when we arrived back to the hotel, the Miami-Dade staff were in the lobby and congratulated us on having a great season.....when we told them that we would see them on the court "tommorrow night" you could hear their chins hit the floor. Updated Return to Site Index eevb.net Search Engine Email EEVB East End Volleyball History East End Volleyball Classic Match One of the best East West confrontations occurred when Bob Samuelson came to the Hampton Beach Club to play in the 1989 DeKuyper Tournament. Samuelson came from his California home to visit his mother who was living on Long Island and planned to win his airfare at the DeKuyper tournament. Once again, the East Coast would not cooperate. Samuelson's team had some tough matches during the day, especially against Keith Seidmann and Steve Zelko, but made it to the finals relatively unscathed. The final match was against NYC's perennial champs Rafael Del Valle and Omar Vargas who had been playing EEVB tournaments since the early '80's when all of the tournaments were triples competitions. Playing then with Eric Pavels and George Pavel (4 man rosters with 1 substitute was the rule then) they always finished 1st or 2nd. When tournaments switched to doubles, they still posted good showings, always a team to be feared. The final was tight throughout with neither team holding more than a 2-point lead. Ahead 14-13 Del Valle dug a ball into the net. Vargas played it up perfectly as he slid under the net and Del Valle put it away for the victory. Quietly, but with strong determination, referee Cathy Zaloga called a net violation on Omar Vargas, whose shoulder had touched the net as he slid under the net (He later said it was the right call).
