History of Beach Volleyball
http://www.Volleyball.ORG Early 1920s Most accounts place the sport's origin in Santa Monica, California, where the first Volleyball courts were put up on the beach at the Playground (Santa Monica). Families played 6 vs. 6. Beach volleyball became the principal sport in a French nudist camp founded in Franconville (north-western suburb of Paris). First two-man beach volleyball game was played in Santa Monica, California. Beach volleyball appeared in Palavas, Lacanau and Royan (France), around Sofia (Bulgaria), Prague (Czechoslavakia), and Riga (Latvia). In the US, people would escape the depression by going to the beach, 4 vs 4 and 3 vs 3 games were played. First official two-man beach tournament was held, at State Beach in California. It was organized by Holtzman and won by Saenez-Harris. First tournament held in California (Los Angeles), awarded the best teams with a case of Pepsi as the winners' prize. 1950's Open tournaments held at five beaches in California. Santa Barbara State Corona Del Mar Laguna San Diego Beach volleyball became an entertainment show and Beauty Contests were included in the official program. First Brazil tournament took place, sponsored by a Newspaper Publishing company. Bernie Holtzman and Gene Selznick won an event that featured Greta Tyson, star of "Pajama Tops", as Queen of the Beach. Beach volleyball became more than a sport, it turned into a real show.

In 1995, the sport of Volleyball was 100 years old! The sport originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports. Today there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 million players worldwide who play Volleyball at least once a week. In William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head. During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport. On July 7, 1896

    Volleyball 1: Early Development
After it was invented in December of 1891, basketball quickly became popular at many YMCAs across North America. But those were YMCAs with a membership of young men who enjoyed running up and down a gym floor. William G. Morgan was physical director at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts, in 1895. Most of his clients were middle-aged businessman who found basketball too strenuous. So Morgan decided to create a sport that would offer them exercise without making them run. He strung a badminton net across a gym floor, brought out the bladder of a soccer ball, and split the men into two teams that volleyed the improvised ball back and forth across the net. Because it was patterned after badminton, Morgan called the new sport "mintonette." In his original rules, the court was 25 by 50 feet and the net was 6 feet, 6 inches high. In a bow to baseball, a match was made up of nine innings, with three serves for each team per inning. There was no limit to the number of players on a team. In 1896, Morgan and some of his members traveled the 10 miles to a YMCA directors' conference in Springfield, the birthplace of basketball, the demonstrate the new sport. Dr. A. T. Halsted suggested that the name should be changed to "volleyball," and Morgan agreed.
