MYTHS AND STORIES
- The Legend of the Volcanoes -

The Legend about Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl comes from the ancient Náhuas. As it comes from an oral tradition, there are many versions of the same story. There are also poems and songs telling this beautiful story. Many years before Cortés came to Mexico, the Aztecs lived in Tenochtitlán, today's Mexico City. The chief of the Aztecs was a famous Emperor, who was loved by all the Indians. The Emperor and his wife, the Empress, were very worried because they had no children. One day the Empress said to the Emperor that she was going to give birth to a child. A baby girl was born and she was as beautiful as her mother. They called her Iztaccíhuatl , which in Náhuatl means "white lady"

By BBC News Online's Dr Damian Carrington
Volcanoes are the dramatic and deadly consequence of our restless planet cooling its fiery core. Through history, floods and earthquakes have resulted in more fatalities, but volcanoes continue to pose a terrifying threat. Scientists have become much better at predicting eruptions and how dangerous a volcano is. It turns out it all depends fundamentally on one thing - how sticky the magma is.
Mount Usu: Volcanic ash can affect world climate for years
As hot magma rises towards the Earth's surface, bubbles of gas begin to appear. If the magma runs like water, then the gas can escape easily and no explosion will take place. The volcanoes of Hawaii and at Etna fall into this category. Their trademark is gushing torrents of red hot lava, flowing down the side of the mountain, like a river of fire. These are the less dangerous of the two types of volcano, because the path of the magma flow can easily be predicted.

Welcome. .. The name of this web site is derived from a spider shaped icefield high on the north face of the Eiger, a mountain that towers above the town of Grindelwald, Switzerland. Heinrich Harrer wrote a book by the same name that documents the first attempts on this alpine face. Harrer was a member of the first team to scale the face. I developed this .sig containing a fictional quote that many people ask me about... "I'll get the rope..." Anderl Hinterstoisser, North Face of the Eiger, July 19th, 1936... Hinterstoisser, a talented young climber attempting the first ascent, pulled in his rope after succeeding in a daring traverse that opened up the route to the summit. Unfortunately, a horrific storm blew in forcing a retreat but the traverse cannot be reversed without a rope in place. All members of the party perished... ...it is now called the Hinterstoisser Traverse Photo by Paul Harrington These are the major segments of this web site: Mountaineering, Climbing, and Hiking an Motorcycling - Long Distance Riding and the Honda ST1100ABS and Pacific Coast What's Robert Broeking.

Last modified on 30 May 2004 Black beak open toward the sky: three years ago this peculiarly shaped vent was the site of continuous activity in the summit area of Mount Etna, but since the eruption of July-August 2001 it lies silent. This is the "Levantino", a satellite vent on the northeastern flank of the Southeast Crater, one of Etna's four summit craters (whose cone is seen in left distance), which first became active in 2000 and participated in nearly all of the spectacular paroxysms of 2000-2001. This view is from the northeastern base of the "Levantino" on 18 March 2004. White gas plume seen in the sky is largely fed from the Northeast Crater, out of the view to the right. Although the Southeast Crater and its satellite vents have remained completely quiet since 2001, it is likely that there will be renewed activity in the future and the place will not be as peaceful as in this photograph.
