Site Temporarily (?) Shut Down
Volcano Hawai'i has been temporarily shut down. I am currently reviewing the information on this site with a colleague to make sure it is as accurate as I can possibly make it. Some people have raised concerns about the accuracy of the contents of this site. When I originally built this site more than two years ago, I based the information on over two dozen resources, many with conflicting information and some that were almost undoubtably out of date. I realize now that that was probably a huge mistake. Therefore, I feel a need to review every piece of information on this site to make sure I'm not giving out incorrect information on these subjects. Thank you very much. We will eventually return (eventually can mean next month or next deade) with a new layout ( W3C compliant and much more user-friendly) and much more content, basically a redesigned site. In the meanwhile, please visit the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory website for much more detailed information about Hawaiian volcanoes. I thank anyone who has ever corrected incorrect information for me.

Volcano Field Trip
Trailhead Teacher's Resources Start Field Trip Volcanoes can be exciting and dangerous. They are also educational since they tell us a lot about the earth and even other planets. The inside of the Earth is very hot. Sometimes, this heat melts through the rock of the earth's crust, sending hot liquid rock (called magma) and gases onto the Earth's surface. A buildup of lava and ash around the area of an eruption becomes a volcano. Volcanoes can erupt for a very brief time or they can erupt many times over millions of years. Sometimes they sleep for long periods and people think they are finished, but they aren't. Mount St Helens was one of these sleeping volcanoes and it surprised everyone when it became active in 1980, causing a lot of destruction and loss of life. Concepts

    Justification for Inscription:
Report of the 21st Session of the Committee Brief description:
A vast area of primary tropical forest dominated by two spectacular extinct volcanoes, Kahuzi and Biega, the park has a diverse and abundant fauna. One of the last groups of mountain gorillas (consisting of only some 250 individuals) lives at between 2,100 and 2,400 m above sea-level. Threats to the Site:
Grave concern that portions of the park had been deforested and that hunting had been reported there, as well as war and civil strife ravaging the country, led the World Heritage Committee to inscribe the site on the List of World Heritage in Danger The site has been much affected by the influx of refugees. Park facilities had been looted and destroyed, and most of the park staff have fled the area. The park may also be serving as a hideout for large militia groups, as well as for illegal settlers. This has led to fires, increased poaching and the illegal removal and burning of timber. IUCN has received several pleas from the staff of the Park for international aid to rebuild both park-infrastructure and staff morale. State of Conservation Reports: Natural site datasheet from WCMC

    Volcanoes of Kamchatka, Russia
Kamchatka's volcanoes have never been bloodthirsty: the natives of Kamchatka can hardly recall eruptions that carried death there. A dark silhouette of volcano against the clean dawning skies does not imply a threat - it is usually a token of nice weather for the people of Kamchatka. It is still hard, however, living in such proximity to the volcanoes, to get used to the idea that they are just some geological objects. The silence alongside the volcanoes is of a special sort, the one that fills the soul with an incomprehensible combination of anxiety and peace. Everything looks strange and unusual; you are gazing around as if perceiving a scrutinizing glance of another universe: you feel scared and at the same time happy, for this scrutinizing glance makes you feel someone's unbound power spreading over you - perhaps that sole true power you want to surrender to: Which of Kamchatka's volcanoes is the most beautiful? There is not an unargued leader, but one can certainly name the first three - though, as it goes, there are few objective criteria to assess beauty - nevertherless, the three volcanoes are Kluchevskoy, Koryaksky and Kronotsky. All the three can be good candidates to symbolize volcanic Kamchatka due to their total assets. The feature of Kluchevskoy, its height, (the absolute heights of the volcanoes are 4,750m, 3,456m and 3,528m respectively), is not as significant as it looks as the first glance. The greatest Eurasian volcano has made nearly 5 kilometers of height due to the fact that it was formed on a specific geological "pedestal", a slope of ancient volcano while the actual height (a relative one) is 3,000m, i.e. less than the height of Koryaksky (3,300m) or Kronotsky (3,100).

    Understanding Volcanoes

Use our free online Teaching Tools to create custom worksheets, puzzles and quizzes on this topic!
Students will understand the following: There are three types of volcanoes: shield volcanoes, cinder cones, and composite volcanoes. A shield volcano produces lava, or molten rock, when it erupts; a cinder cone produces ash; and a composite volcano is a combination of the first two. Each type of volcano has a distinct shape. To prepare for this activity, line a metal tray with wax paper and place it in the refrigerator until chilled. Research materials about volcanoes (An article on volcanoes from a good encyclopedia will suffice.) Volcano Photographs from Hawaii and Indonesia by Brenna Lorenz The first set of photographs was taken at Kilauea, an active shield volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. This volcano is located over a hot spot, and is not located on a plate boundary. Shield volcanoes are the largest type of volcano on Earth and in the Solar System. Kilauea is so large and its slope is so gentle and gradual that many people visiting Volcano National Park at its summit don't realize that they are standing on the volcano. Park personnel say that people are always asking. "Where's the volcano?" This first photograph taken near the peak of Kilauea shows a former lava lake, now with a thick skin covering the still-molten magma a short distance underneath. The wispy white spots on the floor of the crater are places where steam and other volcanic gases are emerging from the magma. Visitors can take a hike along a trail crossing the lake surface. This photograph, taken from a helicopter, shows the vent that was active in 1996. Lava flows have covered roads and neighborhoods on the seaward side of Kilauea.

Whenever there is a major volcanic eruption in the world, you'll see a slew of newspaper articles and nightly news stories covering the catastrophe, all stressing a familiar set of words violent, raging, awesome. When faced with a spewing volcano, people today share many of the same feelings volcano-observers have had throughout human history: We are in awe of the destructive power of nature, and we are unsettled by the thought that a peaceful mountain can suddenly become an unstoppable destructive force! While scientists have cleared up much of the mystery surrounding volcanoes, our knowledge has not made volcanoes any less amazing. In this edition of
