Introduction (grades 4 - 8)

(From VOLCANOES! Poster. All the images are clickable for larger view.) (Left: Poster Fig. 1) Volcanic eruptions are among the Earth's most powerful and destructive forces. Imagine hearing a volcano erupt thousands of miles away. Imagine looking through binoculars and seeing the top of a mountain collapse. Imagine discovering an ancient Roman city that had been buried in volcanic ash. Volcanoes are also creative forces. The Earth's first oceans and atmosphere formed from the gases given off by volcanoes. In turn, oceans and an atmosphere created the environment that made life possible on our planet. Volcanoes have also shaped the Earth's landscape. Many of our mountains, islands, and plains have been built by volcanic eruptions.
Why Do Volcanoes Erupt?
Deep within the Earth it is so hot that some rocks slowly melt and become a thick flowing substance called magma . Because it is lighter than the solid rock around it, magma rises and collects in magma chambers. Eventually some of the magma pushes through vents and fissures in the Earth's surface. A volcanic eruption occurs! Magma that has erupted is called

103. Volcanoes
Do you know the location of any volcanoes? Conclusion. Although volcanoes arecommonly considered natural disasters, they are bearers of new life.

Link to Teacher Page by Maria Gomez Introduction Task Resources Process ... Conclusion
Introduction Have you ever seen a volcano erupt? Do you know the location of any volcanoes? Do you know how to make a volcano? Join me for a fun volcanic experience!! The Task Can you answer the following questions?:
  • What is a volcano? When and how do they erupt? Where are the active and inactive volcanoes located? How do I build a model volcano?

Resources
The Process
  • Find a partner to work with. Print out or obtain a sheet of the questions from your teacher or print them from this page. Explore the sites under resources and search for the answers. When you have completed researching all 4 questions, pick one volcano and report to the class your findings. As a final project you and your partner will click on projects and choose one of the volcanoes to build.
  • Evaluation When you have completed all research, your report, and the final project, your peers will complete a rubric on your findings.
Conclusion Although volcanoes are commonly considered natural disasters, they are bearers of new life. It is important to understand that we may not be able to prevent volcanic eruptions, we can study and learn from them in order to detect any future eruptions.

This is a compilation of published and unpublished geochemical data from multiple sources, organized in a standardized format. The data are available by clicking on the island or volcano of interest below. The text files were created on a Macintosh, so you may need to modify the carriage returns or line feeds to match your system. The files are saved as text with tab-separated-values (.tsv). Notes:
    • The data in this compilation are from a variety of labs and were produced by a variety of analytical methods. Because not all sources reported standards data, cross-calibration of the data were not possible. Be aware that interlaboratory differences may exist and use caution when comparing data, especially elemental ratios, as analytical errors may be propagated.

    http://www.arc.govt.nz/volcanic/
Welcome to our Volcanic Hazards web site. This site has been specially designed for school pupils studying the volcanoes of Auckland but should be of interest to everyone. As you work through the pages you will be taken on a journey, from the past and into the future of these fascinating structures of ours.
The site has been set up as part of the Auckland Regional Council’s GIS in Schools project - one of the Council's many community education programmes. It focuses on assisting pupils and teachers to start using Geographic Information Systems in the school curriculum. We look forward to you sending us your comments about the web site, as we intend to continue developing it further as an information resource on Natural Hazards and their potential impacts on the way we live in Auckland. I wish to acknowledge the assistance of all of those people and organisations who have made their information available to us as we set up 'The Volcanoes of Auckland'. Jo Brosnahan, Chief Executive.

Main Other Academic Resources htmlAdWH('7002737', '234', '60'); A Science Fair Report on VOLCANOES Reason for Report I did this report for my third grade Science Fair in March 1998. I made a volcano model which really erupted by using baking soda and vinegar. When the baking soda and vinegar combine, they create a gas similar to the gas which causes volcanoes to erupt. I have included the recipe I used for the erupting volcano model. Volcanology Geology is the study of the earth. Volcanology is a branch of geology that studies volcanoes. Scientists who study volcanoes are called Volcanologists. Volcanology is a new science that started in the early 20th century. Volcano observatories were built in Japan and Hawaii. These observatories monitor the world's volcanoes. They study active volcanoes during eruptions. They look for dormant volcanoes ready to erupt by watching for changes like new cracks in the ground, steam coming from vents or plants dying. Sometimes they measure the shape of the volcano, the ground temperature, and the level of gases. Seismometers pick up waves and analyze earthquake activity near the center of a dormant volcano. Because of volcanologists being able to predict volcanoes, people usually have time to evacuate before the eruption. The land and homes might be destroyed, but the people will be safe.

    Justification for Inscription:
Report of the 18th Session of the Committee Brief description:
Virunga National Park (covering an area of 790,000 ha) comprises an outstanding diversity of habitats, ranging from swamps and steppes to the snowfields of Rwenzori at an altitude of over 5,000 m, and from lava plains to the savannahs on the slopes of volcanoes. Mountain gorillas are found in the park, some 20,000 hippopotamuses live in the rivers and birds from Siberia spend the winter there. Threats to the Site:
Virunga National Park was inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger at the 18th Session of the World Heritage Committee (1994) in the wake of the war in neighbouring Rwanda and the subsequent massive influx of refugees from that country which led to massive deforestation and poaching at the site. Many members of the Park staff had not been remunerated for almost a year. Poaching of wildlife has continued and the staff lacks the means of patrolling the Park's 650 km long boundary. The human population in the fishing village near Lake Edward has increased several fold, posing a serious threat to the integrity of the Park. The fuel wood requirements of almost one million refugees camping inside the Park is estimated at 600 metric tons/day and is leading to widespread depletion of forests in the lowlands. Fortunately, the mountain gorilla whose habitat is at a higher altitude, have been spared so far.
