82. Savage Earth: Out Of The Inferno
I think that is why volcanoes are so cool to grade school kids, says ChrisNye, a volcanologist at the Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage.
http://www.wnet.org/savageearth/volcanoes/
Mountains of Fire by Kathy Svitil No geological phenomenon assails our senses quite like a volcanic eruption. Stay close enough, and you can hear the explosion, see the fire fountaining, smell the gases, feel the ground tremble, taste the ash in your mouth. "I think that is why volcanoes are so cool to grade school kids," says Chris Nye, a volcanologist at the Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage. "And scientifically, volcanoes are interesting because they bring you information about the interior of the planet, down to 60 miles or more, and help you study the evolution of the planets, on a human time scale. Mostly in geology you think of processes taking thousands or millions of years."
All volcanoes are born when hot magma rises to the surface, infiltrates a weak spot in the Earth's outer crust, and breaks through. Most of the 600-plus active volcanoes on Earth are associated with the boundaries of the tectonic plates, the seven great plates that carry the oceans and continents. They are especially common in subduction zones, which occur when one plate dips beneath another. As the plate dives into the mantle the layer of hot, flexible rock on which the plates glide it gradually is heated. That releases fluids which heat the overlying rock, producing blobs of molten rock that rise to the surface. The molten rock or magma collects in weak patches of crust, in structures called magma chambers. If the pressure in the magma chamber builds high enough, the magma will erupt. A volcano is born. Canada has examples of almost every type of volcano. Although none are erupting now, at least 3 did in the last few hundred years and numerous others have the potential to erupt in the near future. Other countries' volcanoes also can affect Canadians: eruptions in Alaska or along the west coast of the U.S.A. can impact agriculture and air travel across western Canada. Mt. Baker in particular has the potential to affect the Fraser Valley. In addition, large-magnitude eruptions anywhere in the world may affect our weather. Use this site as a resource to learn more about Canadian volcanoes and volcanology. Travel to the volcanoes of Vanuatu with John Seach - Click here for details! Awu Volcano Indonesia
3.67 N, 125.50 E, summit elevation 1320 m, Stratovolcano
Saturday 12th June 2004
Mount Awu volcano in Indonesia's remote Sangihe island was quiet Friday, one day after a major eruption, although volcanologists warned of more possible activity. On Thursday, the 1,320-metre-high volcano erupted black smoke 3,000-metres into the sky and sent rocks and other volcanic materials from its crater. After Thursday's big eruption, Awu is only emitting white vapours from its crater. Although Awu's activity has declined, it does not mean the volcano has returned to normal. Data from seismographs over the past 24 hours shows some continuing seismic activity unser the volcano. More than 18,000 out of 28,000 residents living in danger zones around the Awu's slopes had been evacuated and temporarily sheltered in schools and churches in Tahuna, the main town on Sangihe, 15 kilometres from the volcano's crater.

From the legendary fury of Mt. Vesuvius in the year 79 A.D. to the devastating convulsion of Kobe, Japan, in 1994, this four-part series narrated by actor Stacy Keach tells the stories of these great natural disasters, the scientists who struggle to understand and predict them, and the people whose lives are forever changed by their merciless force. In this Web companion piece, original articles by journalists Daniel Pendick and Kathy Svitil explain the science behind volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis, and feature original animations that illustrate the action of these natural phenomena. You can also Ask the Experts your questions, and explore other Savage Sites on the Web.

WELCOME TO the "Valley of our Lady." That isn't meant to sound spiritual, though at the base of Mt. St. Helens Volcano lies Spirit Lake, which feeds the Toutle River, that flows past Silver Lake, to reach the Cowlitz River, which translates from the native tongue as, "capturing medicine spirits." The fact that Loowit, to use the Indian name for Mt. St. Helens, has always been thought of as a lady (see Tragic Triangle: The Love Story) by those who live within sight of her snow covered mantle. This is still true, though a good 2,600 feet are missing from what was before, as in this photograph of the chapel at YMCA Camp Meehan, taken by a then 14 year-old Barry Murray, our webmaster, in the summer of 1953.
