A volcano update is being hosted by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory in collaboration with the Emergency Management Office of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
Kilauea lava flows entering ocean again
Lava flows erupting from Kilauea Volcano have once again reached the ocean, and they are slowly building new land on the southeast coast of Hawai`i Island. Lava began spilling into the ocean on May 30-31. Visitors to the Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park interested in viewing the activity along the coast are encouraged to be prepared for potentially hazardous conditions by looking at the fact sheet Nearly a year ago, on July 9, 2003, the lava tube system feeding flows to the ocean began breaking down, causing a series of breakouts and numerous surface flows between the Pu`u `O`o vent and the coast. Hundreds of breakouts occurred between July 2003 and May 2004 within about 5 km of the vent. In April 2004, one of these flows, termed the Banana flow, started to advance down Pulama pali, eventually reaching the coastal flat on May 2. It took nearly a month for the Banana flow to creep across the flat and enter the sea. For an overview of the current eruption, see

Hawaiian Volcanoes
The Hawaiian Islands are at the southeastern end of a chain of volcanoes that began to form more than 70 million years ago. Many of these volcanoes formed islands that have subsided and eroded beneath sea level, and some of the old volcanoes probably never reached sea level. Each Hawaiian island is made of one or more volcanoes, which first erupted on the sea floor and only emerged above the ocean's surface after countless eruptions. The largest and most southeastern island of the chain, Hawai`i, consists of five volcanoes. Kilauea, Mauna Loa, and Hualalai have erupted in the past 200 years. Lo`ihi, the youngest volcano of the Hawaiian Volcanic Chain, is still about 1,000 meters beneath the ocean's surface. East Maui Volcano, commonly known as Haleakala, on the island of Maui, is the only other Hawaiian volcano to have erupted since the late 1700's.
Origin of the Hawaiian Island Volcanic Chain
An overview of "hot spots" and thermal plumes in the Earth's mantle is provided in this online USGS booklet about Plate Tectonics. Map of the southeastern or "windward" Hawaiian Islands.

A volcano is a place on the Earth's surface (or any other planet's or moon's surface) where molten rock, gases and pyroclastic debris erupt through the earth's crust. Volcanoes vary quite a bit in their structure - some are cracks in the earth's crust where lava erupts, and some are domes, shields, or mountain-like structures with a crater at the summit. Magma is molten rock within the Earth's crust. When magma erupts through the earth's surface it is called lava The largest volcano on Earth is Hawaii's Mauna Loa. Mauna Loa is about 6 miles (10 km) tall from the sea floor to its summit (it rises about 4 km above sea level). It also has the greatest volume of any volcano, 10,200 cubic miles (42,500 cubic kilometers). The largest volcano in our Solar System is perhaps Olympus Mons on the planet Mars . This enormous volcano is 17 miles (27 km) tall and over 320 miles (520 km) across. Go to Volcano Activities Enchanted Learning

Volcanoes destroy and volcanoes create. The catastrophic eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980, made clear the awesome destructive power of a volcano. Yet, over a time span longer than human memory and record, volcanoes have played a key role in forming and modifying the planet upon which we live. More than 80 percent of the Earth's surfaceabove and below sea levelis of volcanic origin.
  • Learner.org: Volcanoes
Today, there are many active volcanoes worldwide. Is there anything we can do to predict how and when they will erupt? As the world's population grows, more and more people are living in potentially dangerous volcanic areas. Volcanic eruptions continueas they have throughout historyposing ever-greater threats to life and property.
  • How Volcanoes Work This website is an educational resource that describes the science behind volcanoes and volcanic processes. The site is sponsored by NASA under the auspices of Project ALERT (Augmented Learning Environment and Renewable Teaching). It is intended for the education of pre-service teachers, in-service teachers, and university students of geology and volcanology. Each section in the menu builds upon previous sections.
  • FEMA's Volcano Page A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock below the surface of the earth. When pressure builds up, eruptions occur. Gases and rock shoot up through the opening and spill over or fill the air with lava fragments.

Gaseous emissions from volcanic vents over hundreds of millions of years formed the Earth's earliest oceans and atmosphere, which supplied the ingredients vital to evolve and sustain life. Over geologic eons, countless volcanic eruptions have produced mountains, plateaus, and plains, which subsequent erosion and weathering have sculpted into majestic landscapes and formed fertile soils. Ironically, these volcanic soils and inviting terranes have attracted, and continue to attract, people to live on the flanks of volcanoes. Thus, as population density increases in regions of active or potentially active volcanoes, mankind must become increasingly aware of the hazards and learn not to "crowd" the volcanoes. People living in the shadow of volcanoes must live in harmony with them and expect, and should plan for, periodic violent unleashings of their pent-up energy.

Mars is only about one-half the size of Earth and yet has several volcanoes that surpass the scale of the largest terrestrial volcanoes . The most massive volcanoes are located on huge uplifts or domes in the Tharsis and Elysium regions of Mars. The Tharsis dome is 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) across and rises to 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in height. Located on its northwest flank are three large shield volcanoes : Ascraeus Mons, Pavonis Mons and Arsia Mons. Beyond the dome's northwest edge is Olympus Mons, the largest of the Tharsis volcanoes. Olympus Mons is classified as a shield volcano. It is 24 kilometers (15 miles) high, 550 kilometers (340 miles) in diameter and is rimmed by a 6 kilometers (4 miles) high scarp . It is one of the largest volcanoes in the Solar System. By comparison the largest volcano on Earth is Mauna Loa which is 9 kilometers (6 miles) high and 120 kilometers (75 miles) across.
