Counselors
Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • A master’s degree is often required to be licensed or certified as a counselor.
  • All but three States require some form of licensure or certification for practice outside of schools; all States require school counselors to hold a State school counseling certification.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Counselors assist people with personal, family, educational, mental health, and career decisions and problems. Their duties depend on the individuals they serve and on the settings in which they work. Educational, vocational, and school counselors Elementary school counselors observe younger children during classroom and play activities and confer with their teachers and parents to evaluate the children’s strengths, problems, or special needs. They also help students develop good study habits. Elementary school counselors do less vocational and academic counseling than do secondary school counselors. School counselors at all levels help students understand and deal with social, behavioral, and personal problems. These counselors emphasize preventive and developmental counseling to provide students with the life skills needed to deal with problems before they occur and to enhance the student’s personal, social, and academic growth. Counselors provide special services, including alcohol and drug prevention programs and conflict resolution classes. Counselors also try to identify cases of domestic abuse and other family problems that can affect a student’s development. Counselors work with students individually, with small groups, or with entire classes. They consult and collaborate with parents, teachers, school administrators, school psychologists, medical professionals, and social workers in order to develop and implement strategies to help students be successful in the education system.

http://www.stat.fi/tk/he/edufinland/teksti2_6.html
2 Educational institutions and participation in education
2.6 Vocational schools and colleges
Vocational schools cater for post-comprehensive vocational education. Obtaining a vocational diploma generally takes 2-4 years. The first vocational qualification took 2, 2.5 or 3 years to obtain in 1998. These qualifications are, however, being renewed and will by the year 2001 all take 3 years. On the other hand, the duration of studies depends greatly on the student's educational background and work experience. Some of the education is designed and arranged specifically with adults in mind. In the early years of the decade the vocational schools and colleges began to be grouped together to form multi-field institutions. Meanwhile the municipal sector has become the primary owner of these institutions. The apprenticeship scheme has been developed and education is in other ways being more closely integrated with working life. The vocational education provided at the institutions includes work placements lasting at least six months. The vocational schools and colleges had 137,700 students working for a qualification in 1989/99. 80 per cent of them were upper secondary level students and 20 per cent tertiary level. The number of students has dropped in the past few years due to the fact that the vocational college education in the vocational schools and colleges category is being converted to polytechnic level. The vocational college education ceases in a few years' time. There were in 1998/99 school year 372 vocational schools and colleges providing education leading to a vocational qualification. (Table 2.10)

Colleges of General Practice
There are learned colleges covering each medical specialty in Australia. The colleges govern standards, accreditation and assessment benchmarks within their specialty.
ACRRM is the peak professional association for rural medical education and training in Australia. Its core function is to determine and uphold the standards that define and govern competent unsupervised rural and remote medical practice.
The purpose of training in rural medicine is to produce a doctor competent to provide unsupervised comprehensive medical care in rural and remote communities in Australia.
Rural Medicine is a discipline that covers virtually all facets of medicine in primary, secondary and often tertiary care settings. Rural doctors are required to have knowledge, skills and understandings that are considerably broader and deeper than that of a General Practitioner.
In the near future it is anticipated that ACRRM will have a recognised parallel assessment for the successful completion of rural and remote general practice vocational training.
You can find more information about ACRRM at their web site.
