African American Vernacular English
(Ebonics) written by Jack Sidnell
This page includes information on: BACKGROUND African American Vernacular English (AAVE) is the variety formerly known as Black English Vernacular or Vernacular Black English among sociolinguists, and commonly called Ebonics outside the academic community. While some features of AAVE are apparently unique to this variety, in its structure it also shows many commonalties with other varieties including a number of standard and nonstandard English varieties spoken in the US and the Caribbean. AAVE has been at the heart of several public debates and the analysis of this variety has also sparked and sustained debates among sociolinguists. The history of AAVE and its genetic affiliation, by which we mean what language varieties it is related to, are also a matter of controversy. Some scholars contend that AAVE developed out of the contact between speakers of West African languages and speakers of vernacular English varieties. According to such a view, West Africans learnt English on plantations in the southern Coastal States (Georgia, South Carolina, etc.) from a very small number of native speakers (the indentured laborers). Some suggest that this led to the development of a rudimentary pidgin which was later expanded through a process of creolization.

Information on the organization responsible for safeguarding and enriching the Tahitian language, normalizing vocabulary, grammar and spelling, promoting publication of books in Tahitian and general education in the language.
http://www.tahitinet.com/presense/academy.html
THE TAHITIAN ACADEMY The Tahitian Academy was created by a vote of the Territorial Assembly on August 2, 1972. It was inaugurated on July 2, 1974 by the Governor Daniel Videau and its statutes were approved by the Territorial Assembly on December 5, 1974. The Academy is aimed at safeguarding and enriching the Tahitian language, normalislng the vocabulary, the grammar and the spelling, promoting the publication of books in Tahitian as well as the generalized teaching of the language. Since its foundation, the Academy has written, in collaboration with the Territorial Education Service, the books used for teaching Tahitian in the primary schools. In 1987 it wrote and published a huge grammar (T: tarame) of the Tahitian language (500 ex. in bond version and 2,500 ex. in paperback version) aimed at enacting precise official grammatical and orthographical rules. It searches for the translation of words related to specialized fields of activity (navigation, medicine, meteorology, etc) for which it has until now published two vocabularies. The Academy has also published two volumes of words of contemporary Tahitian which were not listed in the usual dictionaries. Each year, it organizes literary competitions aimed at finding the best works from which abstracts are thereafter published in anthologies by the Academy. Until now two such anthologies have been printed.

  • Consistency Most of the arguments philosophers concern themselves with areor purport to be deductive arguments. Mathematical proofs are a good example of deductive argument. Most of the arguments we employ in everyday life are not deductive arguments but rather inductive arguments. Inductive arguments are arguments which do not attempt to establish a thesis conclusively. Rather, they cite evidence which makes the conclusion somewhat reasonable to believe. The methods Sherlock Holmes employed to catch criminals (and which Holmes misleadingly called "deduction") were examples of inductive argument. Other examples of inductive argument include: concluding that it won't snow on June 1st this year, because it hasn't snowed on June 1st for any of the last 100 years; concluding that your friend is jealous because that's the best explanation you can come up with of his behavior, and so on. It's a controversial and difficult question what qualities make an argument a good inductive argument. Fortunately, we don't need to concern ourselves with that question here. In this class, we're concerned only with

Hello, and welcome to my homepage. This page is here to make available some information about myself and my interests. I'm a teacher of English as a second language in Japan. I've also taught in the United States and China. For the whole story, take a look at my resume Currently, I am giving training courses for the Enterprise Training Group in Tokyo. I teach businesspeople at various corporations. I also teach at Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Technology and Nihon University on a part-time basis. My professional interests and activities fall into two main areas, the use of e-mail in language teaching and the promotion of vocabulary acquisition in language learners. I've posted some resources here relating to both of these topics.
    E-Mail and Language Teaching
    Interactive Use of E-mail
I gave this presentation at TESOL's 2000 Internet Fair, in Vancouver, Canada, on March 15, 2000. I demonstrated ways of using e-mail to teach English in any context, concentrating on strategies for replying electronically to student messages. I've posted the handout and example messages from that presentation.
Using E-mail to Simulate Authentic Business Communication
I gave this presentation at the Third Asia-Pacific International Conference of the Association for Business Communication, which took place in Kyoto in August 2000. In my presentation, I talked about using e-mail in a Business English context. I've posted a summary of this presentation with some links to related web resources.

Vol. IV, No. 3, October 1996 John Bauman
Enterprise Training Group Material written for ESL students needs to use somewhat simplified vocabulary and structure if it is to be accessible to lower and intermediate level students. In terms of vocabulary, a writer can try to "keep it simple" while writing, but a more rigorous approach is to compare a text with a list of words prepared for this purpose. A variety of lists of words are available, as well as different ways to use them. In this article, I will briefly list and describe some lists. I'll also discuss a program that will analyze a text and give some links for further exploration of this topic on the internet. Links to sites mentioned are given in the "Web Links" section at the end of this article. Teaching and Learning Vocabulary (Nation 1990) contains a good general discussion of this topic. Nation doesn't hesitate to quantify the issue. His model of an ideal vocabulary teaching sequence starts with the most frequent 2,000 words, which he calls general service vocabulary. Everybody needs to know these words; they make up about 87% of an average written text. After this point, general frequency becomes less useful as a guide to what words to teach. Students are better off studying a list of words specific to their field of interest or need, if one can be found. For the student aiming at English-language higher education, Nation's 800 word University Word List is appropriate. After this, the remaining vocabulary of English is of too little frequency to merit direct study. Skills such as analyzing word parts, context guessing, etc. can be taught.
