Studying Tips For Students

The main issue in learning a foreign language is retaining vocabulary and grammar and using them when needed. The following tips are meant to help you prepare for lessons and study for quizzes, and ultimately retain vocabulary and grammar. The tips below follow the progression of any lesson in al-kitaab
1. Vocabulary Preparation: Step 1:
Listen to the tape while looking at the list of new vocabulary. Repeat words as many times as possible for pronunciation practice. Step 2: Circle useful and most common words. This will help you reduce the amount of vocabulary you have to learn. Step 3: Do the vocabulary drill assigned as homework. The drill will help you practice using the new words. Step 4: Listen to the main dialogue/piece once. Listen a second time and repeat aloud. Step 5: Listen a third time and fill in the blanks in the text. Step 6: Read the completed text with the tape.

If you haven't made your Scheduler yet, you should go back to last article of this series and get to work. Creating your own Scheduler on your computer is the first step to getting yourself organized. If you've got your Scheduler going, you're all set to get started with letting the computer help you with your homework. Get out the homework the teacher gave you today. If any of it is not due tomorrow (such as test announcements, papers, and projects), add them to your Scheduler . Check your Scheduler to see if there is anything on it that you should be doing now (like reading several chapters for a book review that's due next week, finishing a lab report, studying for a vocab test, etc.). Learning from their elders, media and teachers, young adults pick up a lot of stereotypes about other nations. Helping them come to terms with stereotypes, and recognize that stereotypes do contain some truth, but also can not be applied across the board, is central to this lesson. The lesson also helps them improve their descriptive adjective vocabulary while they discuss perceived differences between nations through stereotypes. The English as a Second Language (ESL) program at George School is designed to help international students who need support as they gain the level of English fluency they need to participate fully in regular academic classes.
In ESL classrooms, students focus on communicating in English through writing, speaking, listening, and reading. Typical ESL classes have between six and ten students. Tutors are available to help students in all subjects. The ESL program also provides an introduction to American culture.
Some international students arrive at George School speaking and writing well enough that it is not necessary for them to take ESL courses. Others need the additional support before they are comfortable taking all their classes with American students. Curriculum

ESL 82 is the most advanced reading-composition course in the ESL program. The goals of this course are to help you improve your ability to understand written English and to improve your ability to communicate effectively in writing. You should expect to increase your vocabulary, increase your understanding of English-speaking cultures, especially American, improve your ability to write idiomatic and grammatically correct English and your ability to write papers according to college level standards.
Each week there will be work in reading and writing. Some writing will be done outside of class and some in class. A minimum of 6-9 hours of homework is required.
This is the normal expectation for college level credit classes of three units. The actual amount of time you will need to spend on this course depends on your rate of writing fluency, your reading speed , and the care with which you decide to approach each assignment. Be sure you can set aside this amount of time for homework so that you
