Does Michael Jackson really have vitiligo?
What is vitiligo? Vitiligo is a fairly common non-contagious skin condition for which the cause is unknown. It can occur at any age, but usually starts in young adults. For most people, it starts with a loss of pigment in patches that are usually symmetric (meaning in the same areas on the two halves of the body). Areas that are often affected are the corners of the mouth and eyes, hands, elbows, knees and genitals. Patches can come and go, but in some people the patches can spread, involving almost the entire body. This is known as vitiligo universalis. Hair follicles can also be affected, resulting in patches of white hair. Though the cause is unknown, it is clear that the body's immune cells attack the pigment producing cells of the skin (called melanocytes). Since the patches without pigment no longer have melanocytes, they are very susceptible to sunburns and skin cancer. Sunscreens are very important. Treatment for vitiligo varies. Some people's patches respond to cortisone creams. A variety of light treatments (such as something called PUVA) can help. There is ongoing research to find faster and more effective ways to treat this frustrating condition.

KEY WORDS Antibodies: protective proteins produced by the body's immune system to fight infectious agents (such as bacteria or viruses) or other "foreign" substances. Occasionally abnormal antibodies develop that can attack a part of the body and cause an "autoimmune" disease. These abnormal antibodies are called autoantibodies. Pigment: a coloring matter in the cells and tissues of the body. Pigmentation: coloring of the skin, hair, mucous membranes, and retina of the eye. Depigmentation: loss of color in the skin, mucous membranes, hair, or retina of the eye. Melanin: a yellow, brown, or black pigment that determines skin color. Melanin also acts as a sunscreen and protects the skin from ultraviolet light. Melanocytes: special cells that produce melanin. Ultraviolet light A (UVA): One type of radiation that is part of sunlight and reaches the earth's surface. Exposure to UVA can cause the skin to tan. Ultraviolet light is also used in a treatment called phototherapy for certain skin conditions, including vitiligo.

Vitiligo Vitiligo is a condition which involves complete loss of melanin, the primary skin pigment. The cause of vitiligo is unknown but it appears to be an acquired condition and may appear at any age. The resulting lesions are white in comparison to the surrounding skin. Vitiligo may occur in the same areas on both sides of the face or it may be patchy. The typical vitiligo lesion is flat and depigmented, but maintains the normal skin texture.

WHAT IS vitiligo vitiligo pigmentation. The vitiligo sufferers are observed all over the world, including the white skin communities.
http://members.rediff.com/vitiligo/info.html
WHAT IS VITILIGO: Vitiligo is more commonly known as leucoderma, which simply means white (leuco) skin (derma), i.e. a skin disorder where it looses its normal coloration. It is also medically known as achromia , which means loss of color.
Basically, Vitiligo can hardly be called as a disease but a skin- disorder that has more social than medical significance, especially amongst the dark skin people. Due to retarded melanin formation, there is loss of pigmentation.
The vitiligo sufferers are observed all over the world, including the white skin communities. However, epidemiologically most cases are recorded in India (8.8%) and Mexico. Males and females are affected equally, inclusive of children age group. It may begin at any age. Childhood vitiligo is not uncommon.
CAUSES: The exact cause for the pigmentary disorder remains unknown. However, there are theories suggesting autoimmune link, hormonal connection, genetic tendencies, etc. The familial incidence is almost 20 to 30%. Often observed in the family members. If the parents have Vitiligo, there are more chances of one developing the same. However, it is not a rule. At the same time, numerous cases of vitiligo do not have a relevant family history of Vitiligo.
The precipitating factors have been identified as due to pressure of tight clothes (such as on the waist) or certain occupational hazards such as wearing certain rubber hand gloves. Long term intake of certain drugs is found to produce the pigmentary disorder. In many cases, especially in children, we often have no clue why one develops vitiligo.

Vitiligo
  • What Is It? Symptoms Diagnosis Expected Duration ... Additional Info
  • What Is It? Vitiligo consists of white patches of skin that are caused by the loss of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. Melanin is produced by special cells called melanocytes, which are destroyed in people who have vitiligo. No one knows exactly why these cells are destroyed, but one theory is that vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder, in which the body's immune system turns against itself.
