Vitiligo on the back and arm Definition Return to top Vitiligo is a skin condition in which there is loss of pigment from areas of skin resulting in irregular white patches with normal skin texture. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Vitiligo appears to be an acquired condition and may appear at any age. There is an increased incidence in some families. Vitiligo is more noticeable in darker skinned people because of the contrast. The cause of vitiligo is unknown, but autoimmunity may be a factor. This condition affects about 1% of the U.S. population.
Lesions appear as flat depigmented areas with a darker boarder. The edges are sharply defined but irregular. Frequently affected areas are the face, elbows and knees, hands and feet, and genitalia. Symptoms Return to top
  • Family history of vitiligo Sudden or gradual onset of flat normally textured areas of skin with complete pigment loss
Signs and tests Return to top Examination is usually sufficient to confirm the diagnosis. In some cases, a skin biopsy may be needed to rule out other causes of pigment loss.

Vitiligo
What is vitiligo?
Vitiligo is a pigmentation disorder in which special skin cells (melanocytes) that produce the pigment melanin in the skin as well as the tissues (mucous membranes) that line the inside of the mouth, nose, and genital and rectal areas, and the retina of the eyes are destroyed. As a result, white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body. The hair that grows in areas affected by vitiligo may also turn white. What are some key words of value in understanding vitiligo?
  • Antibodies: Normally, protective proteins directed against infectious agents or other "foreign" substances. Antinuclear antibodies: Antibodies a person makes that react with the very nucleus of that person's cells. Autoimmune diseases: Diseases in which the immune system reacts against the body's own organs or tissues. Biopsy: A small sample. Depigmentation: Loss of color in the skin, mucous membranes, hair, or retina of the eye. Melanin: A yellow, brown, or black pigment that determines skin color. Melanin also acts as a sunscreen and protects the skin from ultraviolet light.

Vitiligo is a skin disorder characterized by the development of completely white patches of skin. What is going on in the body? Skin and hair color are determined by melanin, a pigment produced in cells known as melanocytes. When the melanocytes are damaged or die, they no longer produce melanin. The skin becomes lighter in color. What are the signs and symptoms of the disease? The chalk white skin lesions of vitiligo are often found on the face, lips, hands, arms, legs, and genitals. There is no pain or itching with the lesions. The lesions tend to be more prominent over bony areas, body openings, and around folds in the skin. Vitiligo is also more common in areas where the skin has been injured. The lesions are usually uniform in shape and occur on both sides of the body. If hair follicles are involved, the person may have premature graying of head and body hair. People with vitiligo are generally healthy, but they are more likely to have the following disorders:

TCM Hospital: Vitiligo And Traditional Chinese Medicine In China
Vitiligo is an acquired skin disease of localized pigment loss, which is characterized by irregular white patches on the skin without subjective symptoms.
Main Points of Diagnosis 1. The white patches vary in size, shape and number, with a clear border. There may be an increase in pigment around the white patches. The hair within the area of the patches becomes white, too. The white patches may gradually expand and coalesce with each other. They may be stable and unchangeable at the advanced stage. Some child patients may recover spontaneously at the early stage.
    2. There is no subjective symptom. Erythema and blisters may appear after exposure to sunlight. The patient has a sense of burning heat in the affected areas.
    3. The disease is chronic. It may occur at any age, any site, and is common in adolescents.
