Areas of post inflammatory hypopigmentation are the most common cause of decreased pigmentation but are usually easy to diagnose because of a preceding history of swelling, redness, or irritation. Vitiligo (also called "leukoderma") is a skin condition in which there is loss of pigment from areas of the skin resulting in irregular white spots or patches, even though the skin has normal texture. Vitiligo may appear at any age. Although it is a progressive condition, many people experience years or decades without developing new spots. The cause of vitiligo is not greatly understood, and there may be many causes that result in the condition.
Vitiligo is more noticeable in darker skinned people because of the contrast, although when they tan, even lighter skinned people are affected. This condition affects about 1% to 2% of the US population, or about 3 to 6 million people. In some countries, the incidence is even higher. Worldwide, there are thought to be more than 100 million people with the condition. Vitiligo would appear to be as old as the recorded history of man - it is mentioned in the Bible, and there are references to it in ancient Egyptian, Greek and Chinese writings.
For years, many dermatologists have told their patients that vitiligo is untreatable, or have offered only limited treatments such as steroid creams or PUVA. Some are so bold as to inform their patients "You're lucky it's not fatal. or "You're lucky you don't have cancer." And while it's true the condition is not fatal or physically debilitating, this is of little consolation to most sufferers. Many doctors are equipped only to prescribe the PUVA system (Ultra Violet A light treatments and psoralen medication), and although still appropriate and effective for some patients, new and promising technologies such as Protopic ointment, Elidel Cream, Narrow Band UVB light, pseudocatalase, pigment transplantation, excimer lasers, and other procedures, are showing equal or better success. More and more doctors are becoming aware of the great promise seen in new technologies being developed around the world to treat vitiligo.

Vitiligo
Vitiligo is a condition in which pigment cells are destroyed, resulting in irregularly shaped white patches on the skin. Any part of the body may be affected. Common sites are exposed areas (face, neck, eyes, nostrils, nipples, navel, genitalia), body folds (armpits, groin), sites of injury (cuts, scrapes, burns), around pigmented moles, hair (early greying of hair on scalp and body), and the retina.
Vitiligo affects at least 1% of the population, and occurs in all races. In half of sufferers, pigment loss begins before the age of 20. In one fifth, other family members also have vitiligo. Even though most people with vitiligo are in good general health, they face a greater risk of having other autoimmune diseases such as diabetes, thyroid disease, pernicious anaemia (B12 deficiency), Addison's Disease (adrenal gland disease) and alopecia areata (round patches of hair loss).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitiligo
Vitiligo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Vitiligo is the patchy loss of skin pigmentation due to an auto-immune attack by the body's own immune system on skin melanocytes . It frequently begins in late adulthood with patches of unpigmented skin appearing on extremities. The patches may grow, or remain constant in size. Occasional small areas may repigment, as they are recolonised by melanocytes. In some cases, mild trauma to an area of skin seems to cause new patches - for example around the ankles (caused by friction with shoes or sneakers). Vitiligo is also caused by stress that affects the immune system leading the body to react and start eliminating the pigment of the skin. The condition is medically harmless, other than the problem that the affected skin areas have no protection against sunlight - they burn but never tan. However, if the skin is naturally dark, the visual effect of the white patches may be considered disfiguring by some. (If the affected person is of pale-skinned ancestry, the patches can be at least be rendered less visible by the expedient of avoiding sunlight and the tanning of unaffected skin.)

31. Vitiligo
vitiligo is a common skin disorder in which white spots appear on the skin usually occurring on both sides of the body in the same location. vitiligo.
http://www.skinsite.com/info_vitiligo.htm
Vitiligo I. Definition: Vitiligo is a common skin disorder in which white spots appear on the skin usually occurring on both sides of the body in the same location. The disease has been around for thousands of years. Vitiligo occurs in 1-2% of the population. It affects both sexes, all races and all ages. II. Causes:
  • The skin is made up of two main types of cells or building blocks: keratinocytes and melanocytes. The keratinocytes make up the bulk of the skin. The melanocytes are the cells that make the skin color. In people with vitiligo, the immune cells (cells which fight infection) attack the melanocytes and kill them. When the melanocytes in a certain area die the skin turns white. No one knows why the immune cells attack the melanocytes in people with vitiligo. Patients with vitiligo are sensitive to free radicals and need aggressive vitamin therapy, see below. Vitiligo sometimes runs in families, meaning that a genetic factor may be involved. Vitiligo sometimes occurs at the site of an old injury.

. . peppar, peppar.
