Urgent News for Pseudocatalase Patients

Welcome to the National Vitiligo Foundation Web site!
This site was created to serve as a clearinghouse for information about vitiligo, for both people with vitiligo and the general public. Vitiligo is spontaneous irregular depigmentation of skin which can occur at any stage in life. Scientifically, its cause is very poorly understood. It is not contagious and is technically not a serious health problem. But people with vitiligo and their families and friends know that it can cause much suffering because of social effects of the change in appearance. Through research, the National Vitiligo Foundation hopes to find a cause, and eventually, a cure. This research is funded by donations from people like yourself. If you would like to make a contribution to help us find the cause and cure for this disease, please click on the button labeled "CONTRIBUTIONS" to the left. By bonding together, people with vitiligo and their families and friends can learn to feel better about themselves and can battle to lessen the social pain related to other people's reactions to the face of vitiligo. We'll keep you informed about the latest research and discoveries, and ways people cope with vitiligo.

We recommend that new visitors follow through the 'About Vitiligo' section (3 pages) that starts below and which takes a question and answer format. This may answer many of your queries. Other areas of this site deal with such things as events research grants membership etc. Vitiligo is quite a common skin condition which can cause extreme distress to sufferers because of its unusual appearance. It affects at least one in every hundred people in countries throughout the world including the UK. It affects people of both sexes equally, and it affects all races. It can begin at any age, though about fifty percent of people with vitiligo develop it before the age of twenty five. You cannot catch vitiligo. It is not infectious. Alternative text navigation

Vitiligo Vitiligo is a skin condition resulting from loss of pigment which produces white patches. Any part of the body may be affected. Usually both sides of the body are affected. Common areas of involvement are the face, lips, hands, arms, legs, and genital areas. Who Gets Vitiligo? Vitiligo affects one or two of every 100 people. About half the people who develop it do so before the age of 20; about one–fifth have a family member with this condition. It may be an autoimmune process (the body makes antibodies to its own pigment cells). Most people with vitiligo are in good general health, although vitiligo may occur with other autoimmune diseases such as thyroid disease. What Determines Skin Color? Melanin, the pigment that determines color of skin, hair, and eyes, is produced in cells called melanocytes. If these cells die or cannot form melanin, the skin becomes lighter or completely white. How Does Vitiligo Develop?

Publication Date May 2001 Questions and Answers about Vitiligo What Is Vitiligo? Vitiligo (vit-ill-EYE-go) is a pigmentation disorder in which melanocytes (the cells that make pigment) in the skin, the mucous membranes (tissues that line the inside of the mouth and nose and genital and rectal areas), and the retina (inner layer of the eyeball) are destroyed. As a result, white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body. The hair that grows in areas affected by vitiligo usually turns white. The cause of vitiligo is not known, but doctors and researchers have several different theories. One theory is that people develop antibodies that destroy the melanocytes in their own bodies. Another theory is that melanocytes destroy themselves. Finally, some people have reported that a single event such as sunburn or emotional distress triggered vitiligo; however, these events have not been scientifically proven to cause vitiligo. Who Is Affected by Vitiligo?

Vitiligo.

Social Hygiene Handbook - 2nd Edition Vitiligo Dr. R. SU CHAPTER 7 1. Definition An area of acquired cutaneous depigmentation characterized by well-circumscribed milky white macules devoid of identifiable melanocytes.
2. Aetiological Hypothesis Various theories are suggested as the aetiology of vitiligo; the same mechanism may not apply to all cases. Autoimmune Hypothesis Autoimmune destruction of cutaneous melanocytes with total loss of melanocytes and melanin pigment in the skin of the affected area. Lymphocytic infiltration on skin biopsy indicate lymphocytes are involved in the destruction process. Frequently associated with other autoimmune diseases; such as alopecia areata, autoimmune thyroid disorders, Addison¡¦s adrenal disease, atrophic gastritis and pernicious anaemia, diabetes. Serum autoimmune antibodies against melanocyte, thyroid, adrenal, islet-cell, gastric parietal cell, and intrinsic factor have been demonstrated. Neurogenic Hypothesis A compound is released at peripheral nerve endings in the skin which is toxic to melanocytes and inhibits melanogenesis. It is postulated that in the dermatomal variant, the affected area shows sympathetic nerve dysfunction. Catechol neurotransmitters probably destroy the melanocytes instead. There is little support for this hypothesis. Self-destruct Theory of Lerner Defect of a natural protective mechanism in melanin synthesis within melanocytes, leading to accumulation of toxic precursors (phenolic compounds) which destroy melanocytes. This hypothesis is based on the lethal effects produced by chemical compounds (phenols) on functional melanocytes; the resulting leukoderma is indistinguishable from idiopathic vitiligo.

WHAT IS VITILIGO?
Patients with Vitiligo develop white spots in the skin that vary in size and location. The spots occur when pigment cells, or melanocytes, are destroyed and the pigment melanin can no longer be produced. Melanocytes normally occur throughout the skin, and in the hair follicles, mouth, eyes, and some parts of the central nervous system. In Vitiligo, pigment cells can be lost in any of these areas. Common sites of pigment loss are:
  • Exposed areas: hands, face, upper part of the chest
  • Around body openings: eyes, nostrils, mouth, nipples, umbilicus, genitalia
  • Body folds: arm pits, groin
  • Sites of injury: cuts, scrapes, burns
  • Hair: early graying of hair of the scalp, beard or other areas
  • Area immediately surrounding pigmented moles
  • Choroid of the eye

Vitiligo: The Pigment Problem Imagine waking up one day and finding white-ish patches of skin on your body. That's exactly what vitiligo (vih-tih-LY-go) looks like. Although this skin disease causes milky-white patches of skin on your face, lips, hands, arms, legs, and genital areas, you can get it anywhere on your body. Dermatologists don't know for sure what causes it. How vitiligo starts.
The amount of color a person loses is different from person to person. People with light-colored skin usually see the difference between patches of vitiligo and suntanned skin in the summer. For people with darker skin, vitiligo is more visible year round. People who have bad cases of the disease can lose skin color almost everywhere on their bodies. Dermatologists can't tell in advance how much skin color a person will lose. How a dermatologist might treat vitiligo.
The most common way to treat the disease is with light therapy and medicine, although dermatologists don't treat children under age 12 this way. (Children should stay covered up and use a sunscreen when they're outdoors.)
