The program is a carefully planned arts curriculum that promotes intellectual, aesthetic and emotional growth. Discipline is emphasized as an essential component of a personal work ethic.
Students take studio classes in drawing, graphics, color theory, two-dimensional design, sculpture, ceramics, and photography, as well as survey classes in art history, tracing visual arts from prehistory to contemporary philosophies. Studio assignments are designed to introduce the student to a variety of media and the nature of the creative process and art objects. The Visual Arts faculty also stresses the importance of the academic program as an integral part of each student's education.

The image of Franklin D. Roosevelt on the U.S. dime was created by sculptor Selma Burke , whose legacy as an artist spanned over 50 years. Though the dime is engraved with the initials J.S. (John Sinnock, chief engraver at the Mint) according to the National Archives and Records Administration of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library in Hyde Park NY, the source of the image on the coin was the "sculpture of FDR done by Selma Burke" completed shortly before the President's death in 1945.

The education building will allow adequate parking and will be within walking distance of three major schools in our community: J.T. Brackenridge Elementary, Tafolla Middle School, and Lanier High School. This education facility will serve to attract youth to a public visual arts space, enabling them to access visual and media arts instruction and exhibitions. The facility will also act as a much needed venue for the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, the City of San Antonio, and community-based non-profit organizations and/or groups. The Guadalupe truly believes that art can be a catalyst for change in a community. The At the forefront of such an exciting project has been Executive Director Maria Elena Torralva-Alonso. At a press conference held on Wednesday, February 4, Torralva-Alonso announced that effective February 27, 2004 she will step down from the position of Executive Director. Torralva-Alonso will continue to work in the office until a new Director is appointed and will focus on major projects currently underway in order to bring them to a conclusion for future growth, stability and success of the Guadalupe.

Visual Arts The Washington University School of Art is the oldest university-affiliated art school in the nation. The Washington University Gallery of Art was the first art museum west of the Mississippi. (Both date back to 1879 as part of the St. Louis School and Museum of Fine Arts, which also gave rise to the Saint Louis Art Museum.) Over the years, the School of Art has been home to faculty such as Max Beckmann and Philip Guston, and in 2003 placed 21st in the rankings of graduate and professional schools. Meanwhile, the Gallery of boasts one of the finest university collections in the United States, with an exceptionally strong modern collection pioneered by former curator H.W. The primary goal of education is to enable children to develop their minds and intellectual capabilities using all forms of creative intelligence as means for achieving this goal. The expressions of thoughts and feelings take many forms. Verbal and written language are only two of the forms that communicate these expressions. Art, music, dance and drama also communicate thoughts and feelings through visual forms, sounds, and movements.
For children to develop their mental capabilities and realize their fullest potential, they need to be exposed to many kinds of knowledge, to many ways of knowing their world and expressing their thoughts. If the development of some kinds of knowledge and ways of experiencing the world is neglected or ignored in school instruction, then a primary goal of education is only partially fulfilled.

The program of Visual Arts at the New World School of the Arts has been designed to provide students opportunities to master a wide variety of approaches to personal expression through the use of two and three dimensional media.
Individual growth and development are pursued through the study of drawing, design, painting, photography, computer graphics, sculpture, ceramics, and mixed-media techniques. Additionally, the study of art appreciation and art history provide an understanding of the contributions of the artist to the development of world culture and the role of the professional artist in contemporary life.
Art students are required to maintain a sketchbook throughout their high school studies for review and evaluation. The program is augmented by visiting artists who offer alternative aesthetic viewpoints and particular skills training above and beyond that offered by our regular instructors, all of whom are exhibiting artists.

EMINENT AUTHOR AND EDUCATOR MARK GOTTSEGEN HAS JUST DELIVERED HIS LONG-AWAITED critical essay on the problems with college-level art education in modern times, and has authorized its publication here on the Art Renewal Center web site. Mark is the author of The Painter's Handbook , and Chairman of the ASTM Subcommittee on Artists' Paints and Materials, among his many credentials. A tenured professor in the university system, Gottsegen gives us an in-depth account of the failures of that system, explains what led to the present situation, and offers suggestions as to how the reforms it so sorely needs might be brought about. Read what he has to say about it, without further ado.

The Athens School of Fine Arts has evolved from a small nucleus established in 1837 known either as the Polytechnic or the School for the Arts. In 1843 the School for the Arts was organized into three divisions under a single director:
First: a part-time school providing supplementary education to craftsmen Second: a full-time school for young people intending to work as industrial craftsmen Third: a full-time higher educational school for teaching the fine arts.
The third division of the school, which taught subjects such as painting, sculpture, architecture, lithography, woodcutting, geometry and cartography, was called The School of Fine Art and was the real ancestor of today's Athens School of Fine Arts. It was the predominant branch of the School for the Arts from 1844 and 1862.
The school's second division, called the School of Industrial Arts, developed into the Technical University, which, since 1863, has become a very important factor in Greece's industrial development.
In 1910 the School of Fine Art was separated from the Technical University and provided with its own director. Finally, in 1930, the school was renamed the Athens School of Fine Arts and established as an independent institution.
