This is a place where the electricity of the creative arts and the energy of academic learning come together. It is a place where creativity, discipline and passion walk hand in hand with character, truth and camaraderie. The Program in Visual Arts GENERAL INFORMATION Princeton Visual Arts Princeton or Art School? Getting In Majors and Certificates ... The Creative Environment at Princeton PRINCETON VISUAL ARTS Princeton University's Program in Visual Arts has a faculty of working artists of established reputation and outstanding teaching ability who offer studio courses in ceramics, digital photography, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video. They give seminars and lectures in contemporary artistic practice and the history and theory of film as well. Whether students are interested in a program of study leading to a special major in studio arts or a certificate program, or desire to take just one or two courses, the visual arts program provides them with excellent physical facilities and an atmosphere of serious intellectual inquiry. Princeton believes that a strong liberal arts education provides an essential foundation for the aspiring artist and is the best platform for understanding the place of the arts in modern society. Even a cursory glace at the dominant journals devoted to art, photography, and cinema indicates that the visual artists of today are engaged in a dialogue with art history, information theory and literary criticism, and in debates about group identity and politics. As a result, the artist needs to be broadly familiar with the cultural history of the late-nineteenth and twentieth centuries and be aware of the multiplicity of issues that have excited artists of these periods; all of these things come together to form the ongoing traditions leading up to the present.

America's first well-known school of painting, the Hudson River school, appeared in 1820. As with music and literature, this development was delayed until artists perceived that the New World offered subjects unique to itself. The Hudson River painters' directness and simplicity of vision influenced such later artists as Winslow Homer , who depicted rural America. Middle-class city life found its painter in

The South Carolina Visual and Performing Arts Curriculum Standards describes what students should know and be able to do in the visual and performing arts prior to graduation from high school. These standards set high expectations for students and are intended to raise the level of artistic and cultural literacy as well as improve students' performance in the visual and performing arts. The standards clearly communicate these expectations to parents, students, teachers, the business community, and the public. These standards are based on the South Carolina Visual and Performing Arts Framework , adopted by the South Carolina State Board of Education in November 1993. The standards were developed in collaboration with the following professional arts organizations: South Carolina Dance Association, South Carolina Theatre Association, South Carolina Music Educators Association, and South Carolina Art Education Association. Each organization appointed four individuals to serve on the Visual and Performing Arts Academic Achievement Standards Development Team. In addition, each respective arts organization appointed a Standards/Assessment Task Force to serve as a resource for the Achievement Standards Development Team. This document represents a collaborative effort among the Development Team, the professional arts organizations, and the Department of Education.
