  • In 1999-2000, 45 percent of music specialists and 39 percent of visual arts specialists had a master's degree in their respective fields of study or in a related arts field. Forty-five percent of regular classroom teachers had a master's degree. Arts specialists participated in a variety of professional development activities. For instance, 72 percent of music specialists and 79 percent of visual arts specialists reported professional development activities focusing on the integration of music or visual arts into other subject areas within the last 12 months. A sizable majority of music and visual arts specialists felt that their participation in various professional development activities focusing on arts instruction improved their teaching skills to a moderate or great extent (69 to 75 percent). On a typical school day in 1999-2000, music specialists taught an average of six different classes of students. Visual arts specialists taught on average five classes on a typical school day.

School of Visual Arts and Dance
Dean: Jerry L. Draper
The School of Visual Arts and Dance is relatively young within the history of the University. Founded in 1973, the school has existed largely as presently constituted since 1978 when the Department of Dance faculty joined the other components of the school: the Department of Art, the Department of Art History, the Department of Art Education, the Department of Interior Design, the Institute for Contemporary Art, and The Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts. In 1990 the school assumed administration of the Appleton Museum of Art. These academic units offer an extensive program of instruction in all areas of the visual arts and dance. In fact, every level of undergraduate and graduate degree that a university can offer in these areas is represented within the school, including the established terminal degree in each discipline. Accordingly, the school is unique in the state of Florida. The school promotes the visual arts and dance within this community. Its goal is to provide a broad-based liberal arts education for students, while at the same time training them to be dancers, artists, scholars, teachers, or other professionals in the field. It functions to enrich their lives and to provide them with the means of self-expression in an increasingly complex and impersonal technological society. The study and practice of art are viewed as a necessary link in the educational system, both as a learning process and as a means of personal fulfillment. Measures are applied within the school-and indeed throughout The Florida State University campus-to keep the spirit of open inquiry vital and productive.

A typical entry lists the date of sale, the auctioneer, the lot number, the low and high estimates, the actual selling price, and the complete auction catalog description. Although ArtFact includes records for the fine arts, antiques, collectibles, and jewelry from auction catalogs around the world, the primary emphasis is art and decorative art produced in the U.S. and to some extent in Britain. Subjects of the Visual Arts: Nude Females
page: As goddesses, seductresses, saints, sinners, and muses, the female has been a recurring subject in art for millennia. Nude depictions of women appear in most cultures, on both sides of the equator, and in rich variety. The early Woman (Venus) of Willendorf is rendered replete with voluptuous curves, while ancient Cycladic goddesses are depicted as skinny-figured, with arms crossed at their waists. African female nude figures often grace utilitarian objects, while Indian nudes dance alone ecstatically and sometimes embrace in same-sex groups. Central American art includes fierce nude Aztec goddesses, and Peruvian ceramic pots show women giving birth or making love. Medieval Irish "Sheela na gig" nude sculptures spread their legs and hold their vulvas open. Sponsor Message.

In the School of the Arts , professional training programs in the performing and visual arts rank with the finest conservatories and art schools in America. They are guided by the belief that a student's growth as an artist is enhanced by a greater appreciation for the humanities and sciences. Our students work side-by-side with the faculty, in the master-apprentice tradition. The work is demanding, the hours are long, and - for the talented and committed student - the rewards are invaluable. Our alumni are working professionals. Many have received coveted awards and fellowships, including the Oscar, Emmy, Obie, Golden Globe, Drama Desk, Clio, MacArthur, Prix de Rome, and Guggenheim. All can trace the foundation of their success to a unique Purchase combination: a faculty of working professionals, close and individual mentoring relationships, proximity to New York City, and the opportunity for students to be treated as professionals from the start. The School of the Arts comprises the Conservatory of Dance Conservatory of Music , and School of Art+Design
