The mission of Young Audiences of St. Louis (YASTL) is to work with elementary and secondary schools to integrate the arts into the curriculum to improve education, to foster children's creativity and lifelong participation in the arts, and to increase appreciation for our community's diverse cultural heritage. Why is integrating the arts into the curriculum important?
Visit Americans for the Arts at http://www.artsusa.org/public_awareness/pac_article.asp?id=610 to view Champions of Change "Champions of Change (1999) is a collection of seven major studies that examined the role of arts education on the academic, behavioral, and thinking lives of children. The report acknowledges the "messy, often hard-to-define real world of learning, both in and out of school" and, therefore, sees these findings as all the more relevant." What does YASTL offer?

A contemporary interdisciplinary programme that meets the needs of today's professional artist. Students learn how to be creative problem-solvers with a range of media and can pursue careers as professional artists and/or work in creative industries. Artist driven collaborative projects, live jobs and work experience are included. What will I learn?
The flexible interdisciplinary philosophy of the school means that all students are able to make choices about the media they would like to use in connection to the aims of their ideas. In Studio Practice students are able to explore interdisciplinary practice as well as study painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, installation and moving image. They are taught how to develop their ideas and to creatively solve issues in their work, with the aim of an exhibition at the end of the year. In Year One, part of the Studio Practice time is spent on equipping students with practical workshop based and new media skills. Drawing is a compulsory component of the programme and provides students with a methodology that enables them to sustain and generate ideas to drive their practice. The programme offers a contemporary definition of Drawing, which sees students experimenting with diverse media and approaches.

S UMMARY This exhibit tells the story of the African-American artists' quest for creative recognition in their chosen art forms. The story follows these artists via their early exposure to European art and genre paintings and respectfully following these rules in their learned crafts. Later, there is a fusion shown, using the European, African, and American cultural context in these artists' works. The exhibit is a visual presentation, along with historical text covering the early and recent achievements of these artists involved in the Visual Arts. Over 60 personalities are on display with biographical facts and information. Many examples of their creations are also represented. Included are: painters, sculptors, muralists, engravers, portraitists, print makers, illustrators, photographers, woodcut printers, lithographers, folk artists, and cartoonists. Books, pictures, photos, magazines, museum catalogs, visual crafts, [etc.] are on display. Library resources and established museums as focal reference art centers are included to enhance the viewers scope in seeking additional information on this subject. A bibliography is available upon request.

    Significant Points
    • Artists usually develop their skills through a bachelor’s degree program or other postsecondary training in art or design.
    • Keen competition is expected for both salaried jobs and freelance work, because many talented people are attracted to the visual arts.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Artists generally fall into one of three categories. Art directors formulate design concepts and presentation approaches for visual communications media. Fine artists, including painters, sculptors, and illustrators create original artwork, using a variety of media and techniques. Multi-media artists and animators create special effects, animation, or other visual images on film, on video, or with computers or other electronic media. (
