In late May / early June 2001, there was a hoax concerning the "sulfnbk.exe" "virus". Email went around the world telling people that on May 25 (or June 1), 2001 the "virus" would "activate". People were told how to delete the file from their system. The email was in the form of a chain letter and told people to forward the letter to everyone they'd sent email to in the past few months and warn them about this file. The sulfnbk.exe file actually does nothing more than allow for long file names within Windows. It's benign and quite harmless. But thousands (millions perhaps?) of people deleted the file anyway based on the "say-so" of a chain letter.

Introduction to the Viruses
In 1898, Friedrich Loeffler and Paul Frosch found evidence that the cause of foot-and-mouth disease in livestock was an infectious particle smaller than any bacteria. This was the first clue to the nature of viruses, genetic entities that lie somewhere in the grey area between living and non-living states. Viruses depend on the host cells that they infect to reproduce. When found outside of host cells, viruses exist as a protein coat or capsid , sometimes enclosed within a membrane. The capsid encloses either DNA or RNA which codes for the virus elements. While in this form outside the cell, the virus is metabollically inert; examples of such forms are pictured below. Viral micrographs : To the left is an electron micrograph of a cluster of influenza viruses, each about 100 nanometers (billionths of a meter) long; both membrane and protein coat are visible. On the right is a micrograph of the virus that causes tobacco mosaic disease in tobacco plants. When it comes into contact with a host cell, a virus can insert its genetic material into its host, literally taking over the host's functions. An infected cell produces more viral protein and genetic material instead of its usual products. Some viruses may remain dormant inside host cells for long periods, causing no obvious change in their host cells (a stage known as the

When Ashley came home from soccer practice with a headache and unusual body aches and pains, she thought she had caught the flu that was going around school. But by the next morning, Ashley's temperature had soared to 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39 degrees Celsius) and her throat felt like she'd swallowed hot coals. Even worse, she was so tired she could hardly lift her head off the pillow. Ashley had never felt this bad with any cold or flu. After dragging her out of bed, Ashley's mom took her to the doctor's office. A physical examination and a blood test revealed the verdict: mononucleosis. Ashley had heard other kids talk about "the kissing disease," but she'd never paid much attention. Now that she had it, she wanted answers. What was it? What could she do to get well? And, most importantly, when could she get back to school, soccer, and life in general? What Is It?
Infectious mononucleosis (pronounced: mon-oh-new-klee- oh -sis), sometimes called "mono" or "the kissing disease," is an infection that is usually caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). A similar illness can be caused by other viruses, such as cytomegalovirus (pronounced: sy-tow- meh -gah-low-vy-rus).

169. West Nile Virus
section of National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) provides data, information, and maps related to outbreaks of the West Nile virus and mosquito
http://westnilevirus.nbii.gov/
West Nile Virus The West Nile virus appears to be firmly established in the United States, and researchers expect its continued spread and entrenchment in wildlife populations. Since 1999, WNV has been detected in humans, horses, birds, or mosquitoes in 47 states and the District of Columbia. Only Hawai'i, Alaska, and Oregon have yet to report any detection of WNV in human, equine, bird, or mosquito populations. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 4156 people in the the U.S. tested positive for the West Nile Virus in 2002, and 284 people died of the virus. Many more people were likely to have been infected with the virus, but experienced mild or no symptoms, and were never tested. As of 13 November 2003, the CDC has received confirmation from state agencies of 8219 human cases of West Nile Virus for the year, resulting in 182 deaths. Statistically, a person's risk of contracting West Nile is low. In most areas where the virus is established, only 1% of the area's mosquitoes carry the virus. Less than 1% of people bitten by these infected mosquitoes develop serious complications from the virus; the remainder exhibit flu-like symptoms, or no symptoms at all. Those at highest risk are the elderly and people with weakened immune systems; it is important, however, for all people to protect themselves from mosquito bites to minimize the risk of infection.

EU may protect zoos from virus
The extent of the crisi in the UK has forced Blair to delay elections AMSTERDAM, Netherlands The European Union's animal experts are to meet to draw up a policy of extending vaccination of animals at risk of contracting foot-and-mouth to zoos. German and Dutch agriculture ministers will urge the EU on Tuesday to allow member countries to vaccinate zoo animals without threatening their exporting status. They will make their submission to the Standing Veterinary Committee which will consider a preliminary recommendation from scientists to allow EU member states to vaccinate zoo animals. The issue is important because vaccinations threaten a nation's disease-free status and could lead to restrictions on its exports of meat and livestock. Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) What is Feline Immunodeficiency Virus? Virologists classify feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) as a lentivirus (or "slow virus"). FIV is in the same retrovirus family as feline leukemia virus (FeLV), but the viruses differ in many ways including their shape. FIV is elongated, while FeLV is more circular. The two viruses are also quite different genetically, and the proteins that compose them are dissimilar in size and composition. The specific ways in which they cause disease differ, as well. How common is the infection? FIV-infected cats are found worldwide, but the prevalence of infection varies greatly. In the United States, approximately 1.5 to 3 percent of healthy cats are infected with FIV. Rates rise significantly-15 percent or more-in cats that are sick or at high risk of infection. Because biting is the most efficient means of viral transmission, free-roaming, aggressive male cats are the most frequently infected, while cats housed exclusively indoors are much less likely to be infected. How is FIV spread?

BRUSSELS, Belgium European ministers have proposed extending the ban on British exports of livestock until March 27 in an effort to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. Ministers have also recommended an European-wide ban on livestock markets and the assembly of cloven-hoofed animals for "at least a week."
