A strain of encephalitis that is spread by mosquitoes, the West Nile virus killed seven people last year in New York, and traces of the virus have been found in at least four other states. Massachusetts became the latest state to report evidence of the virus when on July 21 two crows tested positive for the disease. Connecticut, New Jersey and Maryland also have reported cases of the disease.

Time.com People Fortune EW Florida's 2nd case of West Nile virus MADISON, Florida (CNN) A 64-year-old woman is in the hospital undergoing treatment for West Nile virus, the second human case confirmed in this state, a spokesman for the health department said Saturday. Spokesman Frank Penela said the woman lives in the same county, Madison, as the 73-year-old man who was diagnosed with the virus in July. That man is still hospitalized but is now in stable condition, Penela said. A medical alert has been issued for 28 north Florida counties. Spraying for mosquitos in Madison and other counties began last month after dead birds were found to be carrying the virus. Mosquitos feed on the birds and then bite humans, spreading the illness. The virus can cause encephalitis, or swelling of the brain. In Georgia, authorities said a hawk found in June in DeKalb County, on the east side of Atlanta, tested positive for West Nile virus. The bird was found by a man walking his dog. It was Georgia's second confirmed case in a bird. A crow infected with West Nile virus was found in Lowndes County, in south Georgia, by a citizen in early July.

That corner of the Internet is Usenet, a series of newsgroups dedicated to topics as diverse as the Los Angeles Lakers, Unix system administration, or any imaginable permutation of sex. On Usenet, people interested in those topics can meet, discuss, and post files. But along with debates and downloads, viruses are spread and archived there, says Dmitry Gryaznov, the manager of advanced virus research at McAfee, a division of Network Associates. Gryaznov, a member of the VirusPatrol project at McAfee's Avert Labs, has been studying viruses on Usenet for more than five years. Despite the perception that Usenet is increasingly irrelevant in the face of the Web, its population is actually growing, he says. The volume of Usenet posts grew 20 percent from January 2001 to April 2001, he says. And those new visitors are likely to encounter a flood of viruses, including Trojan horses, backdoors, and tools used to take over PCs for use in denial of service attacks, he says.
