The Ph.D. Program in Virology was formed in 1983 and is conducted under the auspices of the Division of Medical Sciences (DMS), which is part of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS). Ph.D. degrees are awarded through the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Harvard University (HU). The Program currently has a total 53 students. Virology students pursue their study and research amid 600 graduate students from other programs in the Division of Medical Sciences. This program is a joint effort of 50 Virology faculty. Specific research areas include: biochemical mechanisms of cell growth control, transformation, signal transduction, and transcriptional regulation, the molecular genetics, molecular biology and molecular pathogenesis of latent, persistent, or cytolytic virus infections, the characterization of virus-receptor interactions and the mechanisms of cell entry, structural studies of viruses and viral proteins, the use of viruses to study protein-protein and protein-nucleic interactions, the use of viruses as vectors for heterologous gene expression and for gene therapy, the interaction of viruses with cells involved in non-specific or specific immune responses, the pathogenesis of viral infection and rational antiviral drug design. Aims and Scope: Archives of Phytopathology and Plant Protection publishes original papers and reviews covering all scientific aspects of modern plant protection. Subjects include phytopathological virology, bacteriology, mycology, herbal studies and applied nematology and entomology as well as strategies and tactics of protecting crop plants and stocks of crop products against diseases. The journal devotes much space to articles dealing with scientific aspects of integrated plant protection within the framework of ecologically sound and economically reasonable land cultivation. Relevant topics include advanced methods of diagnosis, computer-assisted diagnosis, research and new findings in the field of plant and soil hygiene, biological methods of plant protection, selective chemical methods of plant protection, and the effects of plant-protecting agents and their toxicology, methods to induce and utilize crop resistance, techniques of application and economic aspects of plant protection.

Virology Graduate Training Program at the University of Maryland Virology is the study of viruses and their hosts. Virologists explore how viruses enter cells, direct the cell’s machinery to transcribe, translate, and replicate their genomes, and then exit the cell to establish new infections. It is an exciting discipline that encompasses the fields o f Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, and Genetics.
Since Fall 2001, the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Maryland College Park has offered a world-class specialization in Virology funded in part by a 5 year NIH Training Grant. Virologists from several departments on the Maryland campus and the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (Center for Biosystems Research) have joined with scientists from the nearby National Institutes of Health and the USDA Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC) to offer state-of-the-art training that emphasizes the true breadth of Virology.
Unlike virology programs that concentrate on viruses that only infect selected hosts, students have a unique opportunity to join a highly interactive group of scientists working on viruses that infect a wide array of animal, plant and fungal hosts. Interests of the faculty range from the smallest of all pathogenic agents- viroids, satellites and prions- to the largest of the viruses, the poxviruses.
