The Origins of Virology
These notes aim to explain:
  • Discovery of Viruses
  • Development of techniques
i.e. how we got here!
Definitions:
Viruses are:
sub-microscopic, obligate intracellular parasites.
  • Virus particles (virions) themselves do not 'grow' or undergo division.
  • Viruses lack the genetic information which encodes apparatus necessary for the generation of metabolic energy or for protein synthesis (ribosomes).
No known virus has the biochemical or genetic potential to generate the energy necessary for driving all biological processes, e.g. macromolecular synthesis. They are therefore absolutely dependent on the host cell for this function.
  • Viroids are small (200-400nt), circular RNA molecules with a rod-like secondary structure which possess no capsid or envelope which are associated with certain plant diseases. Their replication strategy like that of viruses - they are obligate intracellular parasites.
  • Virusoids are satellite, viroid-like molecules, somewhat larger than viroids (e.g. approximately 1000nt) which are dependent on the presence of virus replication for multiplication (hence 'satellite'), they are packaged into virus capsids as passengers.

Who are we?
The Virology research team at the University comprises several interconnected groups located in the Divisions of Sciences and Health Sciences, and spread across the Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington campuses. Together they have expertise in all areas of virology. Current research activities of theme groups encompass multiple projects in the areas of: viruses and cancer; viruses and immunity; human and animal health virology; invertebrate virology; viral infections and diagnosis; vector-borne diseases; plant virology; and human respiratory disease and hepatitis. The group has an exceptionally strong track record of publications, and collaborates internationally with research institutes in Germany, the UK, the US, Australia, Finland and Israel. Theme participants have won in excess of $6 million research funding from national and international sources in the last five years.

59. US ARMY MEDICAL RESEARCH UNIT-KENYA
Research and surveillance of tropical diseases, including virology, parasitology, and immunology, to develop and test improved means for predicting, detecting, preventing, and treating infectious disease threats in East Africa.
http://www.usamrukenya.org
Programs Links Page Guest Book The mission of USAMRU-K is to develop and test improved means for predicting, detecting, preventing and treating infectious disease threats to military and civilians in East Africa Why is there a US Army medical research unit in Kenya? There are three principal reasons. First, when American or allied troops travel in the tropics, they are exposed to many diseases, such as malaria, dengue, and leishmaniasis, that do not occur at home. Often, effective methods for prevention or treatment of these exotic pathogens do not exist. Because there is relatively little interest in the West in these diseases, the US Department of Defense sponsors its own medical research, in collaboration with Kenyan partners, for whom these diseases are not exotic but daily threats. Second, pathogens do not recognize international borders. Today, the world is small place. Less than 30 years ago HIV was an unknown disease of monkeys in central Africa. In 1999, New York City suffered, for the first time, an epidemic of West Nile Virus. The spread of once rare pathogens is increasingly frequent.

Taxonomy and Description of Plant Viruses Syllabus and lecture notes for PLP 611 Molecular Plant Virology Detailed descriptions of the molecular virology research in the Department of Plant Pathology of the College of Agriculture at the University of Arizona are available through the following links. Molecular biology of several small RNA and DNA viruses and their interaction with plants are being investigated in my laboratory. These projects include characterization of viral genomes, replication and recombination of RNA viruses, and virus-plant interactions in resistance and resistance-breaking.
